Is it possible to get info from a church were someone is buried or does one have to go to the Alberta Gov. for info. I have a greatgrand father buried in Smoky Lake and was wondering about what info could be found other then what is on his headstone.

Hi,

After getting some new info on possible spelling variations of our surname Mironick, I searched the global listings again and came up with your message. What history do you have of your name?

My mother-in law's father William (Vlas) Mironick immigrated in 1912 from the Grodno oblast in Belarus, Pruzany district, village Bereza. I found a new email list from JewishGen of the Pruzany area and info received there indicated many people also went to Argentina, though our relative was Greek Orthodox (assuming this or some Catholic branch as wife was this). A search of an Argentina surname directory uploaded by one of the list members gave me alternate spellings of Mironick (which I've been told is definitely Americanized because it doesn't match any European versions, whether Russian, Polish etc.) Name variations that I'm guessing at from the Argentina list have been Mironiuk, Mironchuk and so on, so I started searching again all over the internet. The one other strange thing is that the "only" other Mironicks coming up in in nationwide internet white pages search of the U.S. are 7 in Connecticut, where our William was supposed to have lived for awhile before settling in New York. I wrote to them but received no answers. If you think any of what I said may match or have any history details of your name that may help us, I would really appreciate the information. This is a very hard name to research and the Belarus area.

Sincerely,
Jo Hartman

Peter,
Is it possible if you could look for a person in the cemetery records for me? It is for John Dubois Calvert who died March 8, 1945 at Sprucefield, Alberta, Canada. Thank you, Amy Wickwire

Peter,
Yes! this is them! I am related to John D. and Lafayette, possibly Janet too. I live in the US and I have not done any genealogical research in Canada. Do you know if there are any records (cemetery records, obituary, etc.) that are available? If not, thats fine, you have helped so much!

Names: Our Eastern European names - were often misspelled - not our choice
English speakers - may write what they think they hear - Many of our ancestors may or may not have been literate - either way - may not know if the English version of the names is correct - Over time - the name is continued in the family - Some members of the same family - eg cousins - etc - may have a similar but not correct spelling - One needs to use Imagination - and wild guesses - when researching.
