I would like to find out any information on my grandparents, Louis and Elisa Sorge. They owned a garage and service station in Pincher for many years - Sorge's Sales and Service. My great grandparents were Magdeline and Ludgar Gareau. I can't seem to find out any information on my grandfather, Louis Sorge. Just that he was born in 1895 and came to Canada from Nebraska when he was a boy. If you can fill in any of the blanks, I would appreciate it.

The Master Surname Index (not online) of the Alberta Genealogical Society lists some 50 Sorge and 10 Gareau names, among them are;

Louis Bernard SORGE, 1895 - 22 Jan 1975 and
Elisa M. SORGE, 1899 - 3 Aug 1974
Ludger GAREAU, 1855 - 1954 and
Madeline GAREAU, 1867 - 1958
all burien in the Fairview public cemetery at Pincher Creek
There are at least 8 other Sorge burials in this same cemetery.
The Sorge name also appears in the some of the Locaal History Books of Pincher Creek.

Thanks Peter. Ludgar and Magedeline were my great grandparents. Elisa Sorge was my Grandmother and Louis Bernard Sorge was my Grandfather. I live in Colorado Springs, CO, now, but was born in Calgary. Just got back from a trip up to visit all my cousins and of course, Pincher Creek. I want to make another trip next year and plan to spend more time in Pincher. I have quite a bit of information on the Gareau side of the family, but cannot, for the life of me, find out anything about my grandfather, Louis Sorge. I understand, from family stories, that his family came to Pincher from Nebraska around the turn of the century. I know that he had a brother, Theodore Sorge. But, other than that, nothing. I wish I had thought to ask all the important questions many years ago, while my grandparents were still alive, but I did not, and now I don't know where to look.

Hi there--I have found some information on both the Sorge and Gareau families in a local history book. If you like I could snail mail the pages to you--that would be easiest, or find out how to get you a copy of the book. There are also still lots of Sorge's in the area as well as some Gareau's (although I am not sure the Gareau's are the same family). Let me know how I can help--mail me directly if you like.

Hi Jen:

I would be greatful for any information I can get on either side of our family. I did pick up two reference books on a recent trip to Canada (and the Pincher Creek area - my, how it has changed in 30 years). The books are: "Fifty Dollar Bride" which is the history of the Gareau side of the family and "From Prairie Grass to Mountain Pass" which gives lots of history of Pincher Creek and the surrounding area, as well as history on the respective families. My grandparents help to write the book as they were on the Committee. If you have another reference book that contains more history, let me know. I would be happy to have copies of the pages and can give you my address here in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Best regards, Dee Wilkins

Surnames: GAREAU MONETTE
Hi Dee, I have been trying to find my 3rd great grandfather Joseph [possible middle name Louis] Gareau for about 5 years now with no success. I have been in contact with Jean Gareau the Pres of the family association and so far we cannot come up with his family line.
Joseph was, according to census, born cir 1822/25 and married to a Louise Monette dit Boismenu, had 8 children across Quebec and Ontario and finally settled in NY state where he died in 1887.
I have absolutely no origins on him, no parents, birthdate or place, nor marriage date or place.
Would be interested in knowing about your Gareau ancestors - just in case !, because I never know when I will meet the right person with the info !

Sincerely,
Kristin DeCare

I'm looking for any vital statistics regarding my grandmother's family of Pincher Creek -- the Maldidiers. The 1901 census lists Joseph (Head), born April 30, 1854, Eugenie (Wife), born May 5, 1854, Leon (Son), born June 18, 1878, Eugene (Son), born March 3, 1882, and Marie (Daughter and my grandmother), born Sept. 24, 1884. I understand that the parents, Joseph and Eugenie as well as Leon, moved to Vernon some time after 1910, but I believe that Eugene remained in Pincher Creek and married Florestine Gareau in 1912. I would like to trace Eugene & Florestine's family. Any information or suggestions you can offer would be very much appreciated. Thank you !
