Hello, I was wondering if someone knows where I can find more information on my GG Grandfather George John Beynon Jonas. He moved to Pincher Creek in 1893 with his mother Cecilia and his two sons Cecil and Charles. Cecilia died there the 20th of Feb 1905. I found her obituary in the Echo archives. Is there a way I can find out if she has a marked grave? Also, I found homestead records for George and Charles but it says they were unsuccessful in homesteading the said property? Is there anywhere I can find out where they may have lived? I found reference to George with regards to being one of the men who helped the man-hunt for 'Charcoal' but can find no other reference for him or pictures of the family even thought they lived in the small town for over ten years. I have seen the census records of them but I would love to find out more of their lives so I can tell their stories. Any help you can give would be much appreciated!
Thank-you , Dawn

All cemeteries in the Pincher Creek area were transcribed by members of the Alberta Genealogical Society some 10 years ago.

But this Master Surname Index (not online) (mostly burials in Alberta cemeteries) of the Alberta Genealogical Society does not list your JONAS names. So I suspect there is no grave marker.

I found homesteads for a George JONAS, at Sec 33 T61 R24 W4, this would be about 50 miles north of Edmonton.
And I found a homestead for a Charles Edward JONAS, at Sec36 T34 R4 W5, this would be about 20 miles west of Bowden.

Thank-you very much Peter. More pieces to add to my puzzle. I will be ordering the homestead records to see if I can find out more information about the family. I appreciate you looking up the burial records for me. It is a shame that her grave is unmarked as I plan a visit someday soon. Do you think there will be record of her burial site even if it is unmarked? Do you know where I could look for the information when I'm there? Her memorial was at St. John's.

Thanks, Dawn

Dawn,

I presume you will order those homestead records from Alberta rather than Ottawa, as those from Alberta usually have the latest happenings on them.

I was in that Pincher Creek area when those volunteers were recording those cemeteries some 10 years ago.
There is the Pincher Creek old cemetery which shows 216 burials, no longer being used, poor condition, some unknown burials, found some records.

And there is the Fairview Public cemetery with 2593 burials. The Town may have updated this cemetery since 10 years ago.

Then the area of Pincher Creek shows 8 other cemeteries, 2 that have not been recorded.

The Publication Index to Registrations of Births, Marriages and Deaths, lists Cecilia Beynon JONAS died 20 Feb 1905 age 84yrs at Pincher Creek.

Alberta became a Provence in 1905, records for those early cemeteries were not kept very good.

Then an index of History Books I have shows 8 for Pincher Creek.

Hi Dawn,
Does the Obituary mention the name of the Cemetery?
Are you able to visit the Cemetery ? Have you tried to contact the Cemetery Office?. Burials don't just take place - at random at any spot. -there is a grid with locations of grave sites. If there is no Cemetery office - available - the Municipality may hold these records. Or - the information may have been forwarded to the Provincial Archive in Edmonton.

There may be Volunteers at Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness - Alberta
http://www.raogk.org/alberta.htm
Some travel about - take Cemetery Photo;s.

Have you obtained the Homestead Papers - ? from the Provincial Archive in Edmonton.you may find why they had problems with the properties.
They had to finish a specific amount of work within a certain length of time - or - some had very poor conditions made it difficult to farm etc.
Municipal Records - may show property information etc.

All property transfers / sales etc - are recorded - Check with Land Registry office - or ? - my memory fails me right now. I was able to trace my grandfathers - homestead and other properties - to the current. farm. There is a fee for search -may run to many dollars.

Public Library -for the location - as well Provincial Archive - may have directories - etc - that will show where the families lived -

George is your GGrandfather. Have you searched for information via you Grandparents records - Always best to start with now - and work back - sometimes amazing information can be found.

Cheers & Good Luck, Stella

A thought: have you searched Online White Pages Directory 411.ca
There are 27 JONAS listings for Alberta.
Perhaps some are family connected. They may have some information that could help with your research.

Also: Contact the Funeral Home /s in Pincher Creek - They may have further informaton that could help. They will know the name of the Cemetery where burial took place - but whether they would know the actual location of the grave site ? but - one never knows -

Public Library -for the area may hold old directories - that may help you follow the movement of the family.

Provincial Archive in Edmonton - may also hold directories.

Provincial Archive in Edmonton - may also hold copies of Local Family History Books - for the area.

Searched the Alberta GenWeb Local History Book site - for the JONAS surname with 0 results.
BUT!
All books published do not appear at the site - all depends on people volunteering the information - etc.
Search: Digitalized Books - Our Roots
Also: Alberta Heritage Digitalization Project. Digitalized Books.

JONAS:

I dont know if there is any connection between your Beynon Jonas's and mine but seems unusual combo of names.
My grandmothers cousin was called Cecil George Beynon Jonas.
His mother was Mary Jonas (nee rickards) who was married to a George John Beynon Jonas.
Mary and Cecil (born 20 Dec 1888) are listed as 'visitors' staying with my grandmother (age 3) and her parents in the 1891 census York England.
George is not listed with them at that address.

Hi. My grandfather was Cecil George Beynon Jonas. He and his brother, Charles, both ended up in Coquitlam, B.C. Cecil died in 1969 and Charles died quite a few years before that. Cecil had 7 children with his wife Emma Moe Jonas. They were Irene, Cecelia, Karl,Cecil and Corinne (twins), Robert, and Patrick. Of these, only the twins, who are 86, survive. I knew they were from Pincher Creek. Hope this adds to your information gathering....Colleen Jonas Small

Just to make some corrections to my post:. Cecil and Emma's children were-- Irene, Cecilia, Wallace, Cecil and Corinne (twins), Patrick and Robert. They went by the names-- Rene, Cecilia, Wally, Jack and Jill (twins), Pat and Bob. I think Wally and Pat had another official name before their common one. Cecil is my father and only he and Jill survive at 86. I do have some nice pictures of Cecil George and Emma (nee Moe) on their wedding day and on their 50th anniversary.
