Surnames: Frank, Hepp, Hummel, Rey, Retzler, Schaffner, Wimmer
We have recently established that a number of families from the Banat(Germans from Hungary) homesteaded in the Castor area. The following Banaters, with their Banat town of origin, are so far know to have settled in Castor;
Frank Josef and wife, Anna Kraemer ex Szanad/Josefsdorf
Hepp Peter and wife. Elis Mayer ex Johannisfeld/Josefsdorf
Twp 39 R 14.
Hummel Christian and wife Katharine NN ex Gertianosch Twp 39 R 14.
Rey Adam and wife, Elis Klug ex NeuArad/Josefsdorf
Retzler Franz and wife, Anna Friedrich ex Tschestereg/Josefsdorf Twp 39 R 14.
Retzler Michael, son of Franz above, Twp 33 R 14.
Schaffner Anton and wife Magd Retzler, ex Sigmondsdorf/Josefsdorf. Twp 39 R 14.
Wimmer Johann and wife Kath Germann ex Tschestereg/Josefsdorf
Those families for which no Twp is given presumably settled on railroad land. We are interested in identifing and learning about any additional Banater families which may have settled in the Castor area.

Does anyone know anything about the Pommersheim family that may have settled there also. They are related to the Klug family. Joseph Pommersheim married Barbara Hartman who was a daughter of Ann Klug. Her sister Elizabeth Klug is married to Adam Rey.

Hi Dave,

How did you know they were from Szanad?

And how did you know her maiden name was Kraemer?

Josef is my great-grandfathers brother and he settled in Regina before moving and homesteading in the Castor area.

Terry;
All the Banater families that we can document homesteading in Castor had a connection and lived for some period in Josefsdorf. We have copies of the Josefsdorf church books. We wrote a paper some years ago on this Banat settlement from Josefsdorf which was published in the Donauschwaebische Familienkundliche Forschungsblaetter. Pasted below is the Josef Frank family as we can so far reconstruct it.
The reference to Pommersheim rings true. Although they did not live in Josefsdorf and I have not been able to find them in the passenger ship records, it is certainly a Banat surname associated with the area around Neuarad.

Thanks Dave,
I had the ship record and census data for them being in Regina first (for a year or so) and then in Alberta near Castor. This confirms what I was fairly sure of.....much appreciated.
- To your knowledge, no one has yet recovered the church records for Sanad or Szanad?
