I am related to a Herman Morbeck and his wife Bernadina Verkennis, who had at least 4 or 5 children, one of whom was said to be born in Lacombe, Alberta, 1918.
If there are relatives or people who know more about them, please help. Thank you.
Another family, Math SWEEP and wife Bertha, homesteaded closer to Drumheller, but may have had contacts with this MORBECK family since they are half-related. Thanks for any leads or info.

Thank you so very much, Peter. You have given me so many good bits of information, all of them important, that it has taken a week just to get back to you and thank you.
Can you tell me if there are obituaries available through the Alberta Gen.Soc. which are not on the obituary listing? Can someone look up in a particular newspaper around a particular time frame, if one has the dates as you mentioned?
Thank you for any further response.

Jamie,

Thanks so very much for your thoughtfulness and helpfulness.

The newest information you gave me was the information on the military service records for Morbecks (Herman and Joseph Bernard). It had not occurred to me that they could have signed up for military duty in WWI.
You quote some parts of the information on their record. Is there more that one could discover by going to some website or writing some office? Or is that basically the extent of the information possible to obtain?
Thanks for any further reply.

Update-- The Herman Morbeck family is listed in the 1911 Canadian census, and well as his brother Joseph Bernard Morbeck. They are said to have emigrated 1910, even though they are listed in the 1910 U.S. census at Uniontown, Whitman Co., WA too (but not Jos. Bernard).
Family sources indicate the family stayed at Lacombe until about 1920 and moved to Colington, AB, and then in 1927 moved to the Whitelaw, AB (Peace River area) vicinity. One branch of the family, Charles and his family, moved to Harris and Biggar, SK in the 1940s.
Any further information on news about this family would be appreciated. They are in the local history at the land location.
As far as the SWEEPs, even though the Morbecks and Sweeps were related, I have not learned of any times when they lived near one another in Alberta (the Sweeps I mention resided near Hanna, Drumheller, and Calgary for the most part). Thanks for any further help.

My grandfather was Arthur Sweep. His father was known as Matthew Sweep and lived in Alberta. Matthew was born about 1868. I don't have much information about his family as most of the children were fostered out. My grandfather never really knew his siblings or parents as he was only about 4 years old when sent away. My father has recently found Matthew Sweep's children (my grandfathers siblings) but we still don't have very much information on the sweep family. This Mathias sweep you mention that went to Alberta may be my great grandfather or his father(he may have changed his name). I would appreciate any more information you may have and I can pass on any more that I may be able to find.

I may be the great granddaughter of the Mathew Sweep that you are looking for . He lived near Drumheller Alberta and had 12 children. One of those children, Arthur, was my grandfather.Sadly he did not know his family as he and most of his siblings were fostered out. Only since his passing has my father found the other children of Mathew Sweep. I have very little information but from what I have read here I am sure that this is the Sweep you were looking for.

Grace, I am writing up a reply privately for you in response to these messages you left as well as the personal e-mail. We are definitely related. There are several other gt-grandchildren and relatives I am hoping to learn about and hopefully contact as I learn present addresses, etc. There are 10 Sweep names plus some from the related branches listed in the Alberta directory. Thanks for responding.
If there are others related who read this or others who have further info, I would appreciate hearing from you too.
