Thanks Stella,
I have written to the town of Carbon as Sydney's father George is supposed to have died there in 1910. I enquired about his death, about the family, and about the Ghost Pine books. Now to see what happens.
Peggy

Thank you Stella. I have been trying to get further info from the Alberta Genealogical Society, etc but have been getting nowhere. When I search for the book on the Alberta GenWeb Digital Archives, it says contributed for use in Alberta Digital Archives by Gordon Berdahl. When I click on Contact, it says that they do not have the Books and for more info I should contact the Alberta Local History Book Index. When I go there, and find my ancestors, it says that they don't have further info on these persons and I should consult the book list. When I find the book on the book list, I am recycled back to the Alberta GenWeb Digital Archives. OMG, endless cycle. I will try something else.
Peggy

Stella, thank you so much. This supports my experience that often the locality board is better to use than the surname one to find researchers who actually have used the local records. Although I had done your first searches (and the Longstaff children are listed on UK incoming ships manifest ca 1923), you had access to items that gave me the maiden name Blott and her parents' names. THANKS. I had checked the UK Free BMD myself so agree that marriage was probably in Canada. Am printing out your reply to use with other searches. Harry is my 2nd cousin twice removed--if any descendants see this. Elizabeth

I have collected a great deal of information about Swalwell postmaster Harry R. Longstaff, b London, d British Columbia, Canada, but am still without his marriage information. He married Constance Amelia, maiden name unknown, between 1913 and 1916, probably in Alberta, but possibly back in England where both were born. They had at least two children, John W. and Charlotte. Harry was the son of John Longstaff, a coal merchant, and Jane Ellen Dodds. I have their line back to the 1500s, just want to know about his marriage. Thanks.

I have been looking for information on Sydney Chester Johnston. As such I looked through the whole book Memoirs of Ghost Pine Homesteaders and didn't find him. However, I think Sydney is in the book Spirit of Ghost Pine - Kneehill. I think his brother Albert is there as well although his last name is spelled Johnson for some reason. Can anyone confirm that Sydney is in the Spirit of Ghost Pine book? And Albert?
Thank you

My grandfather, James Aston Moore Jr. was born in Three Hills on 21 August 1913 to the above parents. I am looking for information on either parent.

According to family history, James Sr. was a grain broker or trader in town. Upon his death, his widow Ethel and her sons James and George W. left for California in 1916 on the Great Northern Railway from Calgary. The naturalization records I have for my grandfather lists his last residence in Canada as Vancouver, but the entry point listed is in eastern Washington state, which is seemingly contradictory.

Information of either the Moore or Warren families in Central Alberta would be greatly appreciated. This is one of the only parts of my tree where I've hit a dead end. Perhaps the fact that this would have been under the Northwest Territories at the time and had less than perfect record-keeping? Would most residents of this period have been settlers from Eastern Canada?

Did you get any info on the Fentimans? You may already have this:

1916 census:
Bow River, Alberta, 32-24-4
Charles Fentiman, head, age 30, born Ontario, farmer
Muriel Fentiman, wife, age 34, born Manitoba
Harry Fentiman, son, age 8, born Alberta

The same info is on the 1911 census but Muriel’s age is slightly different. In the 1901 census Charles is with his parents Henry and Katherine and 7 siblings in Nepean, Ontario. Henry is a market gardener. These two censuses are free to view here:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/

From Ontario birth registrations, Charles Edward FENTIMAN was born 7 Feb 1886 to parents Henry FENTIMAN, a gardener, and Catherine née NORTON, Nepean, Carleton County.

From FreeBMD, it looks like Henry FENTIMAN and Catherine NORTON were married Jun qtr 1885 in W. Ashford, Kent, England.
Hi Miriam. I had hoped that someone reading the board - may have copies, offer lookups.

These books are usually quite heavy -
Some of the family histories - may take a number of pages - or perhaps just a paragraph.

Provincial Archive in Edmonton: Holds many Local History Books - not all. Perhaps contacting them -may be helpful -

University of Alberta - may hold some of the Local History books in their collection. Contact them.

A Stanley Machell bought my ggrandmother burial plot in Sept 1926. Ggrandmother was Gertrude Deschene (redland). She is buried in Rosebud. I have traced both Stanley & Gertrude to Sherbrooke,qc. They were brother and sister. My problem is that Stanley is the only person that I cannot find a death date, or death place for. All of the family names are Machell,Mcvety,Deschene and Sullivan.

I've seen your Missouri Misels during my research but have not been able to connect them with my lines. It looks like your John Misel came to the US in the late 1800s. Do you know where in Germany he came from? My original John Misel (in the US) arrived in the late 1700s - also from Germany, place unknown. I am still stumped on the family at that point.

I know it has been years since you posted this message, but I just read it since I am now researching my ancestors.
My mother, Marie Misel Buxton, is the granddaughter of John and Mary Ellen Misel (my mother's father was Casper Wilson Misel, the son son of John and Mary Ellen). My mother is 82 years old and still lives in Missouri.

Re: Jacob Fischer / Fisher

Unfortunately, these can't be my Jacob. My Jacob was born in 1886 - well documented thru census and other documentation. In 1900, he was still in Kansas living with his widowed mother, Christine, and 4 other brothers. He was the only one to leave home for Canada - Christine and the other boys remained in the US.

There are several Jacob Fischer/Fisher homestead records "sort of" near Calgary but there is no way to tell if any of them is the correct one unless I order all the homestead records which would be quite expensive. Being a US citizen, would he have had to do anything special to homestead in Canada around 1910? Would he have to become a naturalized citizen first?
