Hello again

The way Barbara (Lucy's daughter) tells it the Gurtons were a very well to do family living on Sawyers Farm, Tolleshunt Major in Essex. When Lucy wanted to marry Richard Appleton the decision was met with disapproval as Richard was not from a wealthy family. The story goes that the Gurton family snubbed Richard (except for Evangeline) however the marriage certificate seems to indicate that Joshua Gurton (Lucy and Evangeline's father) was at the wedding and acted as witness. Richard and Lucy married in March 1903, the same year Norris left for Canada. Whether the two events are connected in any way - who knows? Lucy and Richard went on to have six children, Louis, Edgar, Gordon, Thora, Alma Lucy (always called Mollie by the family) and Barbara. As far as I remember Louis and Edgar didn't have children but Gordon had a son - Bernard who still lives in Essex and is in contact with us. Thora had a son, Richard, again still in Essex and in touch. Alma had a son Hugh, still in Essex and in touch, Barbara had a daughter, Gaynor who is my husband's mother.
Barbara's father died when she was only about 3 years old and most of the information we have about the Gurton's was passed on to her by her mother Lucy. Lucy herself died in June 1960.
We have a photograph of her in later life which I'll ask Barbara if I can borrow and scan in.
If you have any tales to tell of the Gurton's and what brough Norris to Canada I'd be very interested to hear them.
Kind regards
Fiona

Hello Fiona,
Nice to hear from you!
From my data bank on the Gurtons, which is partly based on the information gathered via this discussion thread, I see that Lucy is Lucy Ann Gurton born 1876 in Tolleshunt Major, Maldon, Essex. I do not have a list of her descendents leading to your husband.
I keep in touch with my cousin, Viola Olive Gurton's daughter and one of Norris Gurton's grandaughters.
I certainly would be interested in any Gurton family lore that Lucy's youngest daughter would care to pass on to us.
Best regards

Hello, my husband's grandmother is Lucy Gurton's youngest daughter (I.e. Norris's niece. Although she's 95 her memory is good. I don't know if she will have recollections of any letters being received from Norris after his arrival in Canada?

Hi Janis, nice to get a reply so quickly. We are certainly interested in getting all the information we can about our Scottish heritage. We never knew our Granmother Margaret as she passed away when my father Raymond was only 13yrs. Friday Dec. 14, 1945. Grandfather James died Jan. 19 1974. My wife Rhonda and I will be coming for our first time to Scotland in June. Our Email is djj@canadasurfs.ca looking forward to sharing more information.

Daniel

Hi, that appears to be just a notice of death. Perhaps an obituary would be published a few days later if there were family and friends living in Alberta.

Since the body was to be sent to Barrie Ontario for internment - An Obituary may have been published there - well worth a search.

Do you know of Alberta was a permanent address - or just the place where a death occurred? - If he was not a dentist - but sold dental supplies - he may have travelled because of his occupation.

Unless there was a suspicious death - there would probably not be a newspaper article re the death.
OBITUARIES - do not always give cause of death.

Registration of Death: Since the death was in Alberta
The Registration of Death - from Govt of Alberta Vital Statistics Registry Offices - Will show all personal information - as known to the informant who may or may not know allthe details .

Cheers, Stella

I'm looking for the obit or newspaper article surrounding the sudden death of John Wilson Reynolds at Edmonton Feb 26, 1941. He was a dentist or in the dental profession or tooth paste sales person. Is there any old newspaper that would give the details of how he died, suspiciously or suddenly?
Thank you in advance for any help.
Bill Warnica

Archer and wife was on census for 1916, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Census. Their dau. was away at school in Florida. Margareta Folkers, there dau., died in Florida 1923, I believe it was. And was said to have been buried there in Edmonton. When Archer filled out is Draft card, it states he worked at Edmonton Brewery and Malting Company. Haven't found any of them on an 1920 or 30 census here in U.S. Archer's wife, Helena was buried in Colorado in 1959, with her parents and a sibling. Looking for burial of Margaretta and possibly Archer in Canada. Archer may have died bet. 1830-40.

Archer Folkers worked for Edmonton Brewing and Malting Co. His place of resident was 12002-104 Ave. Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He filled out his U.S. Draft Card on 10-7-1918, while living in Canada. Archer birth date listed as Jan. 1, 1876. We believe his wife Helena, shows up in New York in the 1830's. She's filed paperwork to get back her U.S. citizenship.
Helena may be on an 1840 census for Plumstead, Bucks, Penn., inferred resident Rural Duckes, Canada.
Hoping maybe this helps find a cemetery to look into.

My email is Sadi01@AOL.com. If you will email me your address I will send you a disc with the information I have on it. I have had no contact with any of Herbert's children or grandchildren, Carrie's or Elmer's. Vernon, Sherman, and Nora did not have children. Evaline married Dave Paquin of Todd County in MN and I have been in contact with her gr granddaughter so it is very nice to have found someone who knew of Harry. I stied to send the Shaw Story but it was too big. You will need to send me an address or email address. Sandi

Cunningham's of Alberta, Canada

I am currently looking to trace my ancestry 'Cunningham' and believe my grandmother Edna Maxine Cunningham (b. about 1933) to be the daughter of John Cunningham (b. about 1905) and Louise Savard (b. about 1905). John Cunningham was the son of Alfred Cunningham (b. 1869) and Amelia Rowland (b. 1976)

As I did not know my maternal grandmother, she put my mother up for adoption in 1954. I am trying to research my metis heritage. Thanks for any information you might provide.

Are you researching our Shaw Line? Harry or Harrison was my grandfather's younger brother. Alvin Shaw (their father) was the son of Stephen Shaw. Alvin was in the Civil War from Wisconsin, then moved to Minnesota. He married Helen M. Tiffany. Their children are: Herbert, Vernon who never married, Nora, Carrie, Sherman who never married, Charles my grandfather, Harrison, Evaline and Elmer. I have written a narrative about this family and would be glad to send you a disc if you care to tell me more about yourself: are you a grandson of Harry or great grandson? Harry had 3 children who are their children.
Very much interested in hearing from you. I forgot, Alvin fathered another girl, Ellen, with Maud Carter. It is a very interesting family and history. Sandi
