Yet all through my growing up I heard our origin is Cree and this was kept quiet due to Indian Descrimination in days. I looked at all of the Dark, Darke (my grandmother stated she thought the name was darke with an e), but immigration do not match with William and Florance May.

After the death of his wife Alice Short, Ellen went to Los Angeles to live with her Aunt Emma (known as Aunt Doll) while my father remained in Canada with his father. John William died in 1952 in Medicine Hat. My father John Edward died in 1980 also in Medicine Hat. Ellen died in 2005 in Tigard, Oregon. I hope this is some help. I have a little more information if you can use it.

I understand you are looking for information on Andrew Mann Lyon from the Ottawa area.
There was an Andrew Mann Lyon born to Robinson Lyon
B 1839 D 1890
Married Jane Mann but I don't know when just yet.
She was born in about 1841 in Scotland.

They had, I believe, 6 children together - Andrew Mann, William Thomas, Robert Young - my Grandfather, Norman Herbert, Mary Clarissa Louisa and maybe Robinson Jr. I'm not positive about the Robinson Jr.

This Andrew Mann Lyon was born in about 1862. He married Louisa Mary Dooley who was 16, from Bruce Ohio on 3 March 1887.
I have not yet found documentation of her death or a second marriage for Andrew Mann Lyon, however, if you think this may be the right Lyon, I can give you more information regarding Andrew's Parents, Grandparents, etc.

Hope this helps.

Judith Lyon Grant

Hi Carrie,

You have posted to the CYPRESS - message Board - rather than the Medicine Hat City board.

Always best to post the Surnames {in Capital Letters]/Names of interest on the Subject Line - Perhaps person scanning messages without stopping to read may recognize the name/s -

Do you have any more current information?
Were there other Children.?
You may be able to figure an aprox marriage year through the births of children.

Gerald JOHNSON died in a drowning Accident - pre 1920.
There would have probably been an Inquest/Inquiry/Autopsy.
The Provincial Archive in Edmonton - may hold these records. Or:
Contact the Provincial Coroners Office.
http://ccinfoweb.ccohs.ca/help/fatality/coroners.html

Death Registration/Generalogical Registration can be obtained from The Govt Of Alberta Vital Statistics Dept.Registry Offices.

Marriage Registration/Genealogical Registration - can be obtained from the Govt of Alberta Vital Statistics Dept Registry Offices.

The Cost is in the $40 range. They will search a few years either side of a given date [not certain how many years] There is no refund. as far as I remember.

If the Drowning Occurred - in the Medicine Hat area - there may have been a story published about the drowning/death. *Perhaps - the Provincial Archive may hold this sort of information.

Public Libraries for the area - may have published a story about the drowning. May offer a search - there will probably be a fee for service.

Do you know the name of the Cemetery?

The Cemetery Office - can supply the date of death/burial.
They can tell you the name of the Funeral Home in charge of arrangements at the time. and perhaps if no longer in business their successor.
They may be able to help with information.

From the Alberta GenWeb Local History Books
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canab/lhb/joh.txt
JOHNSON, Gertrude; Donalda's Roots and Branches; Stettler
There is a Volunteer - Shirley - who owns or has access to the above Book - Request a Lookup
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canab/lookstet.html

1911 Census - Canada - Medicine Hat
Gertrude age 18 born 1893, Grant 1869,Alice 1872,Leslie 1897,Ward 1901,Clair 1903,Mildred 1906
All Born in the U.S.A. - arrived in Canada 1909.
The Master Surname Index (not online) (mostly burials in Alberta cemeteries) of the Alberta Genealogical Society does not lists your Gerald JOHNSON;

Nor does the online Medicine Hat cemetery. You can do a Google Search for "Medicine Hat Cemetery" and click on Burial Listing or Contact.

There are no online Marriages. You will have to contact the Alberta Vital Statistics at Edmonton

For further research please contact the AGS Medicine Hat Branch or the Research Services Committee of the Edmonton Branch,
http://abgensoc.ca/

The Edmonton Branch
http://agsedm.edmonton.ab.ca
Peter
They also had a son named Gerald Johnson who died in a drowing accident as a small child before 1920. Is there anyone on the list who can point me in the right direction? I spoke with Marion about 1990 but wasn't into searching then.

Catherine Jeffrey was my great aunt. She was the sister of my grandfather James Jeffrey 1882. Grandfather Robert Jeffrey died at Marion's house on Hanna Road in 1943.

Must admit I don't have much info on Alfred & Catherine...just what's available online.

Is catherine the one who died around 1935 from MS?

Any information would be appreciated.

Victoria Thompson-Greig, Toronto

They may have some reference to the train wreck/accident that occurred near Medicine Hat in 1889.
http://www.shortgrass-lib.ab.ca/mhpl/
Contact the Provincial Archive in Edmonton.
Place Name:Tide Lake.
Location: 25-18-10-w4
County: Cypress
Type: Lake
Do you have the Long Form Death Certificate/Registration.?
Depending on when the death occurred [born 1912] the Death Certificate should be quite informative, much depending on the knowledge of the Informant.
date and place of death, name, names of parents including mothers maiden name, place of birth of parents.
Occupation, name of spouse.etc. includes funeral home, cemetery,
A Long Form Marriage Certificate/Registration - will also show the parents names - and place of birth [ may just mention country - but a help]
Are there other siblings? Searching their inforamtion - may be of help.
Searched the 1901 Census online - There is only 1 McCall listed. William in Lethbridge.
Hopefully !!!- we will see the release of the 1911 Census -
Just did a Google Search and found the following ? it does mention McCall - as well Tide Lake Alberta:
http://users.legacyfamilytree.com/geoff/genealogy/27777.htm
Also the Following: St.Marys Catholic Church Tide Lake.
Brooks Alberta:
http://www.stmarysbrooks.homestead.com/
Wishing you much luck with your search.
Cheers, Stella
Re: ABELEIN search, Please help with Canada information

Hi Chad,

Abelein S.D. would refer to Abelein School District in the Elkwater area of Cypress County. Cypress County is the area around Medicine Hat. Elkwater is about 45-50 miles (70-80 km) southeast of Medicine Hat in the Cypress Hills Provincial Park. All the old school districts were amalgamated and are now a part of the Prairie Rose Regional School Division. There may be some mention in the Cypress Hills Country history book as to how the school district got it's name. If you'd like I can try and have a look in the history book to see if there is any additional information.
Regards, Shannon

Please email me directly at jasmine_brook@hotmail.com about these photos and I will send them to you.
