Does anyone have any information on the Draudson family who settled in the Medicine Hat/Josephsburg/Cypress area of Alberta in the mid-1890s. I have most of the family details, but am looking for immigration information... ship they arrived on, what year, etc. I believe the name Draudson was given to them when they came to Canada from Latvia (father John originally from Berlin, Germany) as there are no other Draudsons anywhere else in the world.

Any information would be helpful... also, if anyone has the Cypress history book for sale, I would be interested in buying.

Hello, I realize that you posted this quite a few years ago but I just stumbled on it. I am researching and writing the History of Latvians in Manitoba from 1895 through to today but in my research I've stumbled onto information about Latvians in Alberta and elsewhere in Canada. There are for example articles published in 1969 in one of the Latvian newspapers from Toronto on the early Latvians in Manitoba as well as Alberta and the founding of the St. Peter's Lutheran Congregation in Josephsburg which I believe is in the Medicine Hat area although today's maps point to a place northeast of Edmonton. I have found reference to J. Drauzdons (Drauzdon/Drausdon) who was a well to do homesteader and a leading member of the relatively short-lived congregation which also built and shared a church with a German Lutheran congregation. I have one photo of the church and members of the congregation. I would be interested in information about the Drausdon's, the congregation and the church, photos and whether it is still standing. I can share the information I have although it is not extensive and probably not what you're looking for. Hope this reaches you ... Viesturs (Ves) Zarins, Ontario - starkis@sympatico.ca

Hi Ves, This is a link to a site that may interest you. http://www.ourroots.ca/e/ It's free and full of local history books. I did a Draudson search and not much came up, but the Cypress hills book showed lots of page numbers. I also searched using LATVIAN and 48 books show up, pay special attention to; OVERLORD of the LITTLE PRAIRIE, a report on Charles Plavin, lots of pages to click on. I also did a search using only LATVIA and 96 books show, but I didn't read any of them. Hope this helps with your project, Butch (board volunteer)
