I am doing research re: early Crowsnest Pass. I was told at the Frank slide Interpretative Centre that Joseph Oakley is buried in Michel BC. I hope that this helps in your inquiry. I would also like to communicate with you with regards to what you or other members of your family can tell me about Joseph Oakley. Many thanks Belle

I just found out today that my grandfather, Percy Almond was the brother in law to Joesph Oakley and that his sister was Joseph's wife (Mary Ellen) who was left with 6 children under the age of 15 when he died.
How do you know Joseph Oakley? Thank you, Barb

Hi, I live in Hillcrest Alberta, the same town in which the explosion occured in the mine in 1914. I am doing research into the early lives of the 189 miners killed that day in order to write a short bio of each for the 2014 commemoration of the disaster.
You asked how I knew of Joseph? I actually didn't but I did as a child know his brother Walter who lived near by. Walter also had a son Tom who was little older that I, but he died a few years ago. I do research at the Frank Slide Interpretative Centre, where Gail Oakley, Tom's wife worked a few years ago. She had told the other interpretors there that Joseph Oakley was buried in Sparwood,BC a town very near to us. Sparwood was earlier known as Michel. Gail too has since died. I will try to see if there are any other relatives in the area. I would like to discuss what you may know of Joseph. Belle

I'm a step daughter of Tom's. He has a cousin who still lives in Lundbreck. Would love to know if Walter's wife Dorothy is still alive, as I have lost contact since my mom Gail passed away.
Anyone who knew my mom would be a welcome to talk too, as I didn't know many of her collegues and friends. Her and Tom were so much fun and gone too soon

Sorry for the delay in replying to this thread.

Joseph Oakley's brother, Thomas, is an ancestor of my aunt. (I'm not actually related to the Oakleys, but had collected information on the family while researching Thomas. The trick was finding my paperwork again... I'm just going to include whatever I have for Joseph here, in case somebody related to the family wants to build on it.)

Joseph Oakley was born about 1864 in Sedgley, Staffordshire to Joseph Oakley and Sabia Randle. (Some census records say "Coseley, Staffordshire", but Sedgley is a later name for an area that includes Coseley.)

The family on the 1881 English Census:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQXJ-SJ7

(Note that Joseph's mother's name should be SABIA, and her parents, Samuel and Eliza's surname should be RANDLE.)

On the 1891 census, the Oakley family lived in the parish of St. George in Tyldesley cum ("with") Shakerley, Leigh, Lancashire. This was an area of coal mines and cotton mills.

According to the 1911 census, Joseph Oakley immigrated to Canada in 1903. His brother, Thomas, came to Canada in 1904, and I believe that their brother Joshua also came to Canada. This is Joseph and his family on the 1911 census, living in Fernie, B.C. (note that his brother-in-law Alexander Almond lives next door):

Joseph Oakley’s body was recovered from the mine on July 7, 1914. There is a Calgary Herald article which mentions this here:

These are family records from the Lancashire Online Parish Project Website, which is fantastic for research in that area of England:
