You can find members of this DANCE family on pages 239 and 400, in the local history book "Trails Northwest, Barrhead" here, http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Ecanab/lookup.html

Also the Master Surname Index (not online) (mostly burials in Alberta cemeteries) of the Alberta Genealogical Society lists these possible names;

Arthur George DANCE, - 3 Dec 1937
Tom DANCE, - 1938
both residence of Freedom, buried next to each other in the Manola Cemetery.

That book, Trails Northwest, is in the AGS Library, ask
AGS Research Services Committee of the Edmonton Branch to copy the pages for you,

James Dance was the 3rd postmaster in Freedom.
James Dance - - 1919-03-19 1929-11-22 Resignation

In The Trails Northwest: a history of the district of Barrhead Alberta, 1867-1967, pg. there's a note about James Dance who came from England with his wife and 4 sons about 1908.

Also see The Golden Years
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.aspx?id=4191 where pg. 155 mentions James Dance reaching the age of 99.

I take it that Beatrice was James Dance's second wife.

You can find Beatrice in the 1881 census for England.

I am most grateful for this most comprehensive reply. All the data you have provided matches what the family believed to be the case. (Beatrice's family details that you provided exactly match my own tree.)
I seems reasonable to presume that there was no issue from the marriage of Beatrice to James Dance.
My last task is to find the date of her death and burial location of Beatrice.
Thank you for your help.

In the history book History of Freedom Naples there is a photo and this story.
James Dance, former postmaster, blacksmith, watchmaker and farmer has witnessed the progress of the district for more than half a century. He is now 95 years and a resident of the Senior Citizens Lodge in Barrhead for the past few months. Over the years he was left a widower twice and lost 3 of his 4 children before they reached middle age (Fred in 1915 when a tree fell on him near the ferry, Bill in 1925, and Art in 1937).
The book was printed in 1963.
Contact me and I can see if I can search the local library and find an obituary and burial.

Dear Freedom66,

Thank you for your most helpful reply. For a long while now, I have not been able to give a lot of time to develop my family history but have now re-started.

If you are able to gather any further information on James' wife, Beatrice Dance (nee Strong) without going to too much trouble, I will be most grateful.

Maybe one day I might get to Canada to make more discoveries on this Albertan branch of my family for myself.

Regards

back in 2008 you made a post about Beatrice Ellen Strong and that you live in Freedom AB. I am looking for a different relative in addition to Beatrice. Her husband was James Dance who was old and alive in 1963. My cousin is James' granddaughter by his first wife. She remembers going with James to her grandmother's cemetery plot. That was James' first wife's plot. Her name was Sarah Ransom. Later he married Beatrice. My cousin doesn't know when James died or where he is buried. She looked in Freedom but there is no cemetery.
Is it possible that you could look for us? This all would have taken place in Freedom as that is where they settled after arriving from England in the early 1900's.

Any help is very appreciated.

Thank you for your message. I must have confused you because I am not resident in Freedom AB, nor do I live in Canada. I therefore have the same problem as you in that I have to use the internet to search for information on my/our ancestors and relations (such as where James Dance is buried). I have tried that, for the cemetery where Beatrice Strong rests, but no trace so far.
Let us stay in touch in case one or other of us makes progress in this search.
Best wishes
Peter

we can wait as you are our only link and much appreciate the effort. I think that James Dance might have lived to about 1966 as I found a reference to him in the nursing home in the another book. My cousin thinks that James may not have had a stone.

Is the Maneola Cemetery near Barrhead/Freedom. Two of James' sons are buried there.
