No it doesn't sound familiar. I was told Ralph Cunliffe was the first white person born in Banff. When he was born his parents were here from England working acroos the country , building the railroad. Numerous people were recruited from the mine work in England to work in Canada

Hi,

I am searching for a woman, last name Cunliffe who was likely born in Alberta Canada in 1925. At some point she and her mother moved to British Columbia. She was born out of wedlock.
Her mother was born in England in 1904 and was educated to grade 6.

She had one son, who was put up for adoption, he was born in Vanouver BC in 1942, she then had at least one more girl and I believe 2 more boys and I am not sure, but the paperwork of her first son points toward them being given up for adoption too.(all during the 1940's)

Do you know who this may be? Does it ring any bells with your Cunliffe's life?

Cheers
Jamie

Hi Jennifer, thank you soooooooo much for all your searching for me, I really am so grateful to you though of course I'm a bit sad that there's no further information to be had. I suppose if I can pin down his exact 1948 death date then there may be something to find in a local newspaper.

Thank you also for taking the photos. Even if they are big my gmail account at alistairgordon1@gmail.com can handle very large attachments though sending them one by one might be a good idea. If they bounce back I'll send you my postal address as you suggested.

Thank you again for all your help!!!

Alistair

I searched the old Banff cemetery a few times but finally found Hugh Grant Gordon's gravesite today. Sorry but there isn't a memorial inscription on the headstone. Also searched the book "We Live in a Postcard: Banff Family Histories" and he isn't mentioned. I have photos of the gravesite and headstone but they are too big to attach. If you want them, send me your email address and I can email them to you directly.

Good luck with your search,
Jennifer
Doesn't look like there is a Kenneth Browning in the Banff Cemetery. There is one BROWNING buried at the Banff Cemetery: BROWNING, B.J. buried August 18, 1910 as per Parks Canada but there is no gravestone marking their grave.

The information above is from the book:
Mountainview & Banff Cemeteries, Banff, Alberta
published by:
Alberta Family Histories Society
ISBN 1-895717-02-07

My information shows that some members of Alberta Family Histories Society of Calgary recorded some Banff cemeteries that show this Hugh Grant GORDON 1873 - 1948. This cemetery was probably recorded some 15 or 20 years ago. You should contact them, they may have the original inscriptions.
http://www.afhs.ab.ca/data/cemeteries/search.php

Genealogical Searches, cost $40.00
http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/766.cfm

Random Acts of Kindness, may look for obits.
http://www.raogk.org/alberta.htm

Alberta Provincial Archives in Edmonton holds a name index of all deaths in Alberta for 1925 to 1959. There would be a fee. See Research Committee, http://agsedm.edmonton.ab.ca
Peter

I hope someone can help me.

I am desperately seeking any further information about Hugh Robert Grant Gordon who was born 6th May, 1873 in Nairn, Scotland. He emigrated to BC in 1890 aged 17.

According to the 1901 Canadian Census for Kootenay East, North Riding - Division 5 - Family 9 on page 1 - He is listed as being in Canterbury Village, he is head of household, single, occupation hotelkeeper.

Searches have been made of the Provincial Archive of B.C. Vital Events Index Marriges 1859-1933 and Deaths 1872-1988 and the Soldiers of WW1 archive - all with 0 results.

The good news is that a search of the AGS Cemetery revealed:
Cemetery: Banff. Town: Banff Alberta;
Name: GORDON, Hugh Grant. 1873 -1948

This sounds like it could be him. Is there a record of relevant memorial inscriptions ? And is there any other information I could discover ?

Any help would be hugely helpful.

Alistair
London, England
Thanks for your reply, Stella. So far I haven't been able to find an obituary or the name of the Funeral Home. When I first discovered the cemetery listing, a number of years ago, I wrote to a volunteer who looked it up for me. The following is the information she was able to find:

William J. Gates
Born Retlaw 1921
Died 1975
Son of Paul Gates and Catherine Veleti

You'd think that would be of some help but to this day I've gotten no further. I found nothing more of William nor anything of Paul or Catherine.

I've been able to track down other family, and trace them back a hundred or more years, with even less information so this has been quite frustrating.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi, An Obituary - may be helpful -the brother - and other family members and their locations at the time may be shown.
as well may also mention names of family members previously deceased [not common].
Funeral Home may take information for the Registration of Death [brother will not be mentioned on same - unless he was the informant[., Funeral Home may take information for an Obituary if one was to be published. They may also take other information -not required for the registration or obituary - may have names / locations of other family members.
Cheers, Stella

Looking for the family of William "Bill" Gates (spelling?) who lived in Banff in the 1940s. He would have been born in the 1920s. He had a brother John "Johnny" who was in the Navy in WWII and stayed with Bill off and on from 1946 on. William may have died in 1975. The family may have been from Retlaw. Any help in tracking this family will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know anything about the family but I do know that Lottie gave handpainted black and white photos to guests she liked. I have one of Mt. Rundle that she gave to a Mrs Handford in remembrance of that lady's stay back in 1945. She has inscribed it on the back of the picture. I've really enjoyed that picture over the years. She must have been a very interesting lady.

Hello,

Reading through some of these links I believe that Arthur Newbound married Louisa Headley not Hoffman (her daughter Olive's married name was Hoffman). There is mention of the birth of Foster Headley

http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/loc_hist/lh_page.asp?Goto=lhg...

http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/loc_hist/lh_page.asp?Goto=lhg...

http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/loc_hist/lh_page.asp?Goto=lif... (mentions that A. Newbound filed a homestead claim in 1906)

http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/loc_hist/lh_page.asp?Goto=lhg... (mentions buying the Headley homestead from Mr and Mrs Arthur Newbound)

here is a homestead for Walter Headley

9 NE 18 43 23 W4
Part Section Township Range Meridian

Reference:
Liber: 225
Folio: 75
File reel number: C-6111
Names: Walter Ralley Headley

Here is Arthur Newbounds homestead
Western Land Grants (1870-1930)
Search terms : " : 2=1 : 1=NEWBOUND.R100. : " References: 1 - 1 of 1 Legal Land Description
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 NE 10 46 12 W4
Part Section Township Range Meridian

Reference:
Liber: 495
Folio: 465
File reel number: C-6333
Names: Arthur Newbound

the liber number of 495
495 April 29, 1912 - May 20, 1912 C-6333
means the homestead was final in the above dates so it was likely filed in about 1907 or so.

Here is Foster Headley
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
Foster HEADLEY
Birth Date: 19 Jan 1904
Death Date: Aug 1980
Social Security Number: 568-03-6880
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: California

Death Residence Localities
ZIP Code: 90504
Localities: Torrance, Los Angeles, California

I am looking for ANY info on my great-uncle, Percy Exshaw Young. He was born in Exshaw, Alberta on November 3, 1907. He was raised in Revelstoke, B.C., but disappeared out of his family's life. He fought in WW2 and spent the last few years of his life back in B.C. (Kamloops). He died in the Shaughnessy Hosptial in Vancouver on October 2, 1969. His death certificate states that his wife was Gladys Mae (maiden name not known). Percy's parents were Samuel and Hannah Young of Revelstoke, B.C. His siblings were Charles Young (moved to Manitoba), Rose, and Jack. Again, any info would be most appreciated. What I have mentioned in this posting is all anybody knows about the late Percy Young. Thanks.

Hi Peter and Rose

Thank you for replying to my query. The Hewson Edward Thompson buried in Edmonton I believe is a brother to my Great-grandfather. He was born and raised in York County in Ont. and had a wife and family in Ont. My aunt told me that he went to Edmonton but he had left his wife. The Elsie (Jacob) Thompson buried beside him is a common-law wife. I was told this by a great-grandchild of their's who I think lives in Edmonton. This same person also told me that He believed that Hewson and Elsie had a daughter still alive, living behind a High School in Banff.

I had been corresponding with this person in Edmonton (and his mother) until I told them that he had a wife and 2 children in Ont. before he went west. Since giving them this information, they no longer reply to any of my emails.

Thanks Robert for your reply but since posting the message I think I have managed to work it out.
The family I am researching are definately fishermen and the OPR's I am looking at state Broad Hythe. An old map shows a fishing settlement on the coast from the, then, inland village of Findochty as Broadhaven which was settled in 1716 by fishermen from Fraserburgh. Today's map shows that the seaside street of Findochty is called "The Hythe"
I am presuming that the place I am looking for is now a part of Findochty.

Re: John Brewster

I am a descendant of John and Isabella... the following is quoted from the "Brewster's Mountain Lodge" website.

Before the Irish famine in the 1840’s, William Brewster managed the Irvine Estate in Irvine, Fernanagh, Erie. James Irvine, a friend & a doctor, had immigrated to Canada & encouraged his friend William to come to Canada. Sarah Jane Irvine followed her brother soon after to Kingston, ON. Here it was that Sarah Jane, an heiress to land holdings in Ireland, married the manager William Brewster, and while farming in Ontario raised eight children. John, the 5th born in 1852, married Isabella Thompson, farming until following the railroad west to Winnipeg where he worked in mill shops before coming to Banff. Isabella Brewster with her four sons, William, James, Fred & Jack arrived in Banff, AB via CP Rail from Winnipeg, MB on March 17, 1888 to join her husband John who had decided Banff would become their permanent home. George, Pearl (1st white baby girl), & F.O. Pat were born in Banff. John, on the advice of his brothers who had visited the mountains earlier, told him of the opportunities in the West, thus he started a dairy to service the Banff Springs hotel & the community. This was the start of a great adventure for the Brewster Family in Banff National Park.

I am the great-grandson of their son James, who left Banff and had a stopping house near what is now Bowden, Alberta. Hope this helps... it's interesting to know there you both exist!

D
