My grandfather was governor of a province in eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border. The name prior to "Say" was Taskinzadehler.

Ship carrying member of Turkish Ottoman Empire sank

I am looking for any info with this.
My ancestor was a Bey of the Ottoman Empire. Amer-Bey or Amir-Bey was the name, later became Ameer-Beg for our family English surname.
He fell in love and married an English Lady who was carrying his child. She went back to England from Turkey. It was a forbidden love as at that time the Turkish and English were against eachother. My ancestor was turned away from the family for the relationship he had with the English Lady.
Later his Father told him to take whatever valubles and leave for England to be with his Wife. The valuables were Jewels and gold.
On the way to england the ship sank taking the Jewels and him with it.
The only thing that was left of him was his unborn child who would be the first Ammer-Beg of England.

If anyone knows of anything that could help discover the proof of the ship going down would be great, and any thing else. It is suspected that the ship was a Spanish Armada Ship.

Olivia

Ottoman Empire decendents

Anyone with info on the Ottoman Empire and surnames? I have researched my Mother family name Ameer-Beg. Amir (Ameer) derived from arabic to mean Prince, Comander or master. Bey (Beg) derived from the Turkish language, Bey/Sultan, means originally a title denoting a local administrator in the Ottoman Empire. My family story is that we have some kind of Royal bloodline and I guess thats pretty close.
So I am trying to find the connection for the two names coming together. And the family ending up in England (well, my part of the family). An ancestor also once worked for or with, the Maharaja Duleep Singh, how did we get there???
Did someone from the empire marry someone and fled? Or married a English lady? An Arabic Lady, or even an Indian Lady? Very facinating and mysterious.

Any clues would be Great!!!

Olivia

Hello all,

Is their a annals or chronicles of the finance ministry that maybe someone can look this up for me in? I don't know the name, only this story that has been passed down through the family.

My Great-great-great-great-great Grandfather was a Ottoman minister of finance, he was falsely accused and executed, after a time the truth came to light, and they realized that he had been falsely accused. The Sultan was sorry, and so gave his two sons a pension for life.

Is that story good enough to find it in the records? Or are their many like it?

I would really appreciate any help!

-Davut.
He was a pastry chef at the Ritz Hotel. We always were under the impression he was from Turkey. Is his a Turkish name, or could it be from another Eastern country?? I have no info. on them after about 1927, as the children were put into foster care, so I need any info about their origins and ultimate ends. Thanks.

In 1863 the British Consul in Smyrna was Charles BLUNT. Any information on this family would be welcomed but I have a number of specific questions:

1. Would the consulate staff have been included in the 1861 Census which was being taken in the UK ?

2. Would Charles Blunt have been a local businessman or someone especially sent out from the UK ?

3. Are there any records in Smyrna of British Births Marriages and Deaths which were recorded by the Consul ?

4. Is there a cemetery in Smyrna where British nationals were buried ?

Many Thanks,

Cyril

Is this ancestor from Turkey or Greece? Please help with this puzzle

Hello,

I've been researching an ancestor who said that he emigrated from Athens, Greece. However I located his 1909 naturalization papers that state he was born in Cashoria, Macedonia, Turkey and that he immigrated to the United States from Salonika, Turkey. When I look at a map, though, the only names that I can find that are close are in Macedonia, Greece. Does anyone know what the problem is here? Was part of Greece called Turkey for some reason or is there another explanation? By the way, I haven't been able to find his original name so far. He changed his name to James Thomas when he came to the US. I do have his birthday, but no names for his parents.

Thanks for any help!

Sincerely,

Betty

A small group were settled in Cyprus brief time prior to the group's migration to Canada.

I am researching ancestors born in Scopo, Tharcy, Turkey in 1893 and residing in Ekklesios, Turkey in 1913. The nationality is listed as Turkish, with the race listed as Greek. I had only heard family speak of their Greek background, ans that the family was from Greece. Now I am thrilled to have a town to begin from, but I cannot locate any of these on a map. Any direction would be helpful. I read some previous posts on which country was ruling different areas. Perhaps this is another instance like that one? I am new to this global area of research, pardon my lack of knowledge here. Thanks,

Algranati

My great grandparents were Gershon/Behor and Bolissa/Behora ALGRANATI (also spelled ALGRANTI) of Smyrne (Izmir), Turkey. Bolissa's parents were
Haim and Rebecca and ABOUAF; Rebecca's maiden name was CARMONA.

Gershon was born around 1863, Bolissa around 1868. They were married during the late 1880's and had 7, possibly 8, children in Izmir.

Most of the family, including my grandmother, immigrated to the US in 1920. They settled in New York City - Manhattan and the Bronx.

Gershon's parents might have been Issac (R.B.Itzhak) and Esther (Mirula). His (Gershon's) siblings may have been Josh (Yesuha), Jacob, Hachim (R. Haim), Raphael and Sol (I'm sure about Sol).

Sol married Zimboul and had 3 kids: Nissim, Claris and Regina (this entire branch of the familiy made their way down to Argentina).

Raphael married Rosa Gabay (Gabai, not sure if there is a connection). They had 8 children: Isaac/Israel,
Saidon, Judith, Sol, Esther, Abraham/Albert, Dave, and Godeva.

Hachim (R. Haim) married Sultana and they had 6 kids: Reyna, Luna, Sasbona, Camila, Rivka and Caden. (Assuming I have the right Hachim).

There is a chance that all of Gershon/Behor's brothers, except Sol, were half siblings. I'm not sure.

If anything sounds familiar, email: sgabai@hotmail.com

My G Grandfather was born in Constantinople 28/11/1857. His father was George Bernard Hadley Born in Poona Bombay India in 1834, he was married to Adelaide Pilett. It's possible that G B Hadley was in the East India Company. I am desperately trying to find any information on G B Hadley and / or his family in Constantinople. How and where do I start to look for records? Are there any record offices who can help in English? or are there any Turkish genealogists who can carry out research on my behalf?

Is anyone able to point me in the right direction to have some genealogical research done locally in Turkey? The name I am reseaching is Greek and my ancestor was born in Izmir/Smyrna ca. 1814. I understand the records are possible few and far between due to the conflict in 1921; however, as I also understand, there were Ottoman censi done in the 1830's and would hope that someone locally might be able to help.

Thanks for any pointers.

Kurkoglu

Like many Croatian families from Bosnia, the surnames are often derived from a Turkish word. In my case, Curkovic is derived from the Turkish word "kurk". My surname translates to Kurkoglu in Turkish. I am just curious to see if anyone knows anything about the history of the Kurkoglu families in Turkey.

During Ottoman times, many Catholic families in Bosnia had to give up one of their sons to be be trained for the Ottoman army (the so-called devsirme or blood tax). The young boys were sent to Istanbul for their education, converted to Islam, and then went on to secure positions within the Ottoman Empire. My curiosity has me wondering...do the Kurkoglu families originate from Bosnia or is it simply a coincidence that two different families in two different countries share the same meaning in their surnames? I am only speculating but it is an interesting theory that quite possibly might have some merit no matter how remote the possibility.

Thanks to all in advance.

Ivan

BULCA - Romanian or Greek in Turkey??

The name "Bulca" doesn't mean anything in Turkish, and it is not a very common name in the country either (aside from our immediate relatives, we don't know any other Bulcas). So we are left wondering as to the origin of this name.

An internet search uncovered a Bulca in Romania so there is a possibility the name originates from there. However, according to the information given to us from our father, there is also evidence that the family was from the Izmir (and southwestern coast) of Turkey, which makes it possible that they are originally from the Greek islands (?).

Any information on the origins of the Bulca name would be appreciated!

I am trying to research my husband's family. I know that Elpiniki KESOGLU came to the US in the 1920's-30's. She was supposed to have been from the Greek minority in Istanbul (Constantinople), but have been told that KESOGLU is a very Turkish name. I believe that she came with an aunt by the name of Sultana MOULAKIS. Ring a bell to anyone? Any ideas where to start????

Eglise du Sacre Coeur - Bebek and Bomonti

I am trying to trace the orphanage which took in my great grandmother and her brother and sisters between about 1862-72. I have found out that this was a roman catholic institution and probably French run and based in Pera.

I am wondering whether the orphanage that used to be attached to the Eglise du Sacre Coeur or Sakrekor Fransiz Kilisesi at Bebek might be the place. I understand that this closed around 1998 and was moved to Bomonti.

I would be very grateful for some advice about who and where to write to in order to find out whether there are any archive records for the orphanage. Should I write to the church itself, or might the records be placed elsewhere? Do I need to write in French? Are there any other possible sites for the orphanage of my ancestors?

My g.grandmother's name was Christina Puchalski or Pouhalski.

Many thanks.

My grandfathers name was Khatchadour Boghessoff and his last place of residence was Conple, Turkey. My mother said that our Ethinicity is Armenian but not sure. I am new to the whole gene.thing. Any help would be appreciated, by the way he resided in Gary Indiana and retired from the steel mills there and died in 1963..thanks

Peters family citizens of Turkey

Would anyone know anything about a town that looks like it is spelled Garzaze on a WWI draft card, it looks like town, Garzaze, state, Syria, nation Turkey. A man by the name of David Peters filed his exemption draft card in Louisville Ky. in 1917 saying he was born at the above place and was considered a citizen of Turkey. He was 29yrs old in 1917 and said he was born 25-Dec.-1888, believe he came to US around 1912. Were there a lot of surnames of Peters in Turkey? If not would he have been a descendant of German or other europeans in the area?. Would anyone know where more info on the above area for the time period of 1888 can be found. Thanks, Marilyn

ancestors of Kasbar Palouian (Armenian)

Looking for parents and other ancestors of Kasbar Palouian in Armenia (which was under Turkish rule at the time of his emmigration to USA). He was born around 1893 and arrived in USA about 1915. Some online data bases of the USA 1920 census list him as "Kasper Paloman" -- a misreading of the census taker's handwriting of "ui" for an "m" I think. (I have a copy of the doc.) His wife is listed as "Haigooj" on the 1920 census and "Haigathi" on the 1930 census. Also "Haigoog" on some online lists. His occupation is listed as storekeeper in 1920 and manufacturer of ice cream cones in 1930. He was living in Philadelphia both censuses and in 1930 had children John (M), Armenia (F), Araxy (F), Masis (M) and Haig (M). On some lists Masis is listed as Moses (again probably a handwriting problem -- whoever took that page of the 1930 census had AWFUL penmanship!) There was also a Maro Palouian (F) living in the USA who might have been a sister of Kasbar. She died in Delaware in 1998.

It was said that the hat was really an Israel hat. Thank you,
Kathleen Parr
I am trying to find any family members in Erzerum.

For all I know my great grandfather was an officer in the Turkish army, captured in the Russian -Turkish war of 1877.I know for sure that the family was big and there should be numerous descendants.

With the strict records in Ottman empire there should be birth records, of course, but must be difficult to have access to.
Are there any records of officers/soldiers missing in that war?
probably in local archives?

The difficult part of it, is that at those times the surnames still didn't exist and the name is too popuar (Omar Ottoman or Osman, as it should be prpoperly read in Turkish)

Thanks

Goal is to try and find written documentation of birth and marriage of an Armenian couple who lived in Mus (says from Mus area from town of Mus), Turkey around 1880-1905. Church records available (assume written in Armenian)? Civil registration required (assume that would be in Arabic or Turkish)? Or is this quest an impossibility? Thanks, Cynthia in California

I think my great grandmother and her brother and sisters may have been placed in a Roman Catholic orphanage in Pera or old Stamboul during the 1860s. I would be very grateful for any information about possible sites.

During the 1870s I am told they lived at Maison Demillerille 303, Pera. I am wondering whether this might have been the address of an orphanage or whether it is the building on 303 Rue de Pera, now Istiklal Caddesi which houses the Rio Brava restaurant?

Any thoughts or theories on this would be most welcome.
Many thanks,
Angela Fry (UK)

Tiomkin, Serebrinsky, Dorfman, in Constantinople in 1920s

I'm trying to help my friend with his ancestry. His father, Hymen Dorfman, was born May 2 or May 6, 1921, in Constantinople. His parents were Simon Dorfman and Freida/Frinia Serebrinsky. Frieda/Frinia was the daughter of Chaim and Rachael Serebrinsky and she was born ca. 1898 in Odessa, Russia. In 1921 she was living in Constantinople and she sailed from Turkey to the USA with her son. Her cousin, Dr. Tiomkin, from Pera, Constantinople paid her fare. We don't believe that her husband, Simon Dorfman, ever came to the USA. She went to live with her uncle, Samuel Kaufman, in Amesbury, Massachusetts. A few years later, she contacted tuberculosis and went to Denver, Colorado, where she died in 1932. Her death certificate states that she was a widow. Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

Karkush and Horen Demirci of Kayseri?

Greetings, I am seeking relatives of the following persons:

Karkush and Horen Demirci (Demirjian/Demirciyan), possibly from the Kayseri area. (I have photos for those interested ~circa 1940s?)

They seem to have been related to my grandmother Menoush Aroush (Haroushian or Arrouchian) and were her paternal cousins. My family now lives in Canada, however many surviving relatives relocated to Lebanon after the genocide.

Thanks for the help everyone!

JG
I found a part of your family tree listing my Uncle Jack Botchan (d. 1991), his wife and children. His wife is Babsy (Bertha) Koss, daughter of Abraham Koss and Malka Peterkowsky of Lodz, Poland, although Aunt Babsy was born in NYC. Just thought I'd help you get rid of that question mark next to her name. Babsy is my grandmother's youngest sister.

Archive in Istanbul-Serb from Belgrade

Hello!
My name is Mladen Mrdalj from Belgrade. I'm 19 year old law student. Yes, I'm Serb, but politic issues are not the main here. Ofcourse.
I desperately need help , connection with anyone who knows how to contact state archives in Istanbul. Because, during Otoman rule in Balkans, Turks were making censuses of population to take taxes easier, ok? It was going on every ten years, and lists were send in Turkey (I presume Istanbul, as capital in that time). I desperately seek for info of that kind, and any help is appreciated.

One more thing. There are many turkish families with Serbian origin (institution of "yeni ceri"), any infos on that? This is not important in my search, but it's sure interesting.

Afterall, I'd like to thank to fans of Ghalatasarai and Turkish national football team for doing what they did to english hooligans.

Cheers!
