Syria to Florence, SC immigrants around 1915

Am trying to find any information possible about my Syrian/Lebanese heritage...I have been told that my great grandmother (who I believe to have been named Najiba) came from somewhere near Aleppo to Florence, SC...but then went back to Syria, and then later back to America, this time through Ellis Island, and my grandfather's family ended up growing up and spending most of their lives in Brooklyn NY. My grandfather and his brothers migrated down to SC again for their food business years later, but I'm just so confused as to why they first came to South Carolina of all places. Hard to find info too because the name was anglicized to "Allawos", but I'm finding that it was probably originally Ateyeh/Atiyeh

I have hit a wall searching for my great grandfather. According to the marriage records of my great-grandparents, he was born in Judea and his parents were (in Latin) Thomas and Maria (although could be Mary). John came to the USA in 1887 and disappeared/died between 1904 and 1909. He was married to my great-grandmother in 1898 in Elkins, West Virginia. Her name was Elizabeth Donnelly-Baker-Ellis-Barnhill (she was widowed & married three times). John & Elizabeth had three sons...Paul, Rusheed Bernard, and Luke Ellis (although Elizabeth had nine sons from all three marriages. Any information about John Ellis (AKA Elias, Allies, or Ellies) or Judea would be Greatly Appreciated!!

Nicolas was listed as a policeman.

I am at a loss which part of Mt Lebanon and the Jeha and Anthony family line.... Or even if it is accurate.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Hi Laurence

IThanks for contacting me - I am really excited. It really looks like we have the same ancestors!

Charlotte and Thomas Vailhen were the parents of Celeste Vailhen who married Angelo Durighello. Their daughter Charlotte Marie Victoire, born in Aleppo, married Felix Guilliume Jorelle, born in France, the second frogman at the French Consulate. It was her second marriage. Her first husband was Jean Joseph Derché, the premiere drogmann, son of a friend of Delacroix. Derché died only a few months after they got married. After Felix Guilliume Jorelle died in 1859 in Cairo, Charlotte Durighello married a third time. Her third husband was Gustave Adolphe Haage, a German from Poland, who had emigrated to France around 1830 and was sent to Cairo, Egypt in 1833 as a physician.

My great grandmother Stephanie is their daughter and was born in Alexandria, Egypt. She married an English or Irishmann. I'm still trying to find out more about this part of the family. His name was Percy Sinnett Smith and he was born in Naples to William Sinnett Smith and Eliza Harriette Oates. William's origins are not known (yet!), Eliza was born in Naples to George Oates and Hariette Rhodes and grew up in Palermo. Her parents originate from Sheffield in Yorkshire, England. Her father was Ebenezer Rhodes, a politician, journalist and cardeologist. He drew maps. Harriette was also an artist and some of her works are sold at auctions around the world.

Charlotte's father Nicolas van Masseyk was married twice. The first marriage was to an English woman named Elizabeth (I don't know her last name). They had three sons. She died young in childbirth. The second wife was a German, Maria Sophia Goverts, from Hamburg. They had 9 children. Maria Sophia's parents are Jacob Goverts and Gertrud van Ree. The Goverts family was a very prominent family in Altona and Hamburg. They originally came from Antwerpen and fled to Altona. They were anabaptists and mennonites and were persecuted for their religion. The van Masseyk family originates from Friedrichsstadt. They too have Dutch respectively flamish roots and were Mennonites.

I can send you more detailed information if you are interested. Just let me know. you can contact me best at my email address: bwras at bluewin dot ch.

Kind regards
Barbara

PS You can send the picture, you mentioned at the above address too, if you like.

Thanks for the information on Mary Sarkis. I was doing some family research on the John Jr. and Julia line. I discovered that Mary had been married before to an Elias Hendy (sp?) and they had two children: Thomas Elias and Joseph Elias. I think I found a death certificate for Mary Sarkis in Montpelier, VT for 16 December 1916. She died of pneumonia. Does this match your information? I have no further information on John Sarkis. I did find a newspaper article that talks about a deed from Mary and John Sarkis to John Sarkis, Jr. for property on Northfield Street that had to be sent to Tripoli to be signed by John Sarkis. This was in 1908. So perhaps he was not in this country when he died. If you have more information I would love to share.

van Masseyk from Aleppo

I am a descendent from N. van Masseyk (son of Jacob van Masseyk and Gertrud van Ree) and Maria Sophia Goverts. Their daughter Charlotte married Thomas Vailhen, who is the grandfather of my great grandmother.

I am particualarly interested in verifying where he came from and was wondering if anybody could help. I am also interested if anybody has more information on his parents and siblings.

Nicolas van Masseyk was the Dutch consul in Aleppo, Syria (Levant). Carsten Niebuhr writes in his book "Travel diary of Arabia and neighbouring countries" , 1779, that N. v. Masseyk is a native of Holstein and therefore a danish subject, his wife a Goverts from Hamburg. In another part of his book, he says van Masseyk was from Friedrichsstadt, Schleswig (Holstein). I have found references to a Mennonite family named van Masseyk in Friedrichsstadt (eg.Tanneke van Masseyk married to Paul Hendrik du Farrang *1704 †1773) and the van Ree family, Hermann van Massek *1708 †after 1770) in the Newsletter 26, of the Gesellschaft for Friedrichsstädter Stadtgeschichte. In this Newsletter it says that the van Masseyk family were Mennonites and changed to the "Remonstranten" Faith (sorry, don't know the English word) after one of the family members married the Mayor's daughter Helena Schutt, a member of this protestant group. In one of the newsletters it is also said, that the van Masseyk were of Dutch origin as were many others in that town, and that they had lived in Friedrichsstadt ever since the town was founded.

Thanks Barbara

Mary Sarkis (1840) was born in or around Wadi Qannoubine in Northern Lebanon. She came to the U.S. around 1895 and lived and died in Montpelier, Vermont. She also lived for a time in the Littleton, New Hampshire area. (Mary, a.k.a. Calijah, was a great grandmother of mine). John was her second husband. Not sure what year he died. Mary had at least 2 sons from her first marriage to Elijah Hindi and quite a few more with John Sarkis. The Sarkis children settled mainly in North Adams, MA. One of her sons with John Sarkis was John Sarkis II, who married a woman named Julia. Shoot me an email if you need more info.

She passed away in 1990 as she was well into her 90's. She was a great lady and a very generous woman. Her son Isaac is my father, who is 98, still lives in Bethlehem PA. My grandmother had two other children, Mose , and Helen, Both of whom have since passed away within the past few years. I do know a Youssef who lived in Trinidad for some time and moved back to Syria and currently lives in Amar with his wife. I know of the Charles family but have not seen any of them since I was very young.

David Elias

Hello! Im also looking for the Syrian branch of my Family! It is uncertain if my Grandfather (Antonio Galvez/Gharbi Aiza) arrived from Homs or if it was my Great Grandfather. It is said the surname was changed from Gharbi to "Galvez". They where from Homs (uncertain if from the City of Homs or somewhere else in the Province) and married to a woman from the surname of Aiza (also from Homs); they lived in the Port of Veracruz (where the inmigrants arrived to México). They where apparently Greek Orthodox (Christian). Hope we can help each other.

Yes, Ain-Ashara, Ain Al-Shara, or Ain Al Shoaraa is a small town located 65km to the south/west of Damascus and facing Mount Hermon and the Golan Heights . It is inhabited by Christians and Druze. The name in Arabic is written as follows: (عين الشعرة or عين الشعراء). It literally means "Spring of Poets".

Here is link indicating the exact location of the town
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&rlz=1C1CHKZ_enUS437US4...

Annie,

WOW! You don't know how happy I am that you found this post! Since I wrote that post, I have found a little more information about Jacob, most of it from a book that a friend of his wrote while he was living in Luther, Oklahoma. I do not know if you are familiar with the book, Oo-Yoo-An Al-Sam-Ma, written by Chester Arthur Keyes, but it is a pseudo-biographical account of Jacob's time while he was still in Syria, growing up. It mentions some of the places he traveled to, such as Damascus, Galilee, and the Mountains of Lebanon, and also some of the things he encountered, such as a massacre that happened at the hand of the Turks during a Christian festival in Hasbeyia. I know that not all of it is completely true, but Mr. Keyes was careful to differentiate between reality and fiction. It talks of the fact that Jacob's name before he came to the U.S. was Yacob Al-Oman, which gives me more of a foothold as to the family he came from.

I would love to have as much information as you can give me, as well as information from Tony, who I am assuming is either the grandson or great-grandson of Anthony Leo Loman? I am the great-granddaughter of Frederick James Loman, who as you know is the 4th child born to Jacob and Martha. Maybe you knew him? He had a son, Frederick Mercer Loman, and his daughter, Laura Ann Loman is my mother. I wish it were possible to travel to Syria myself to gain more information, but with the state of things right now, that just isn't possible. I also received Jacob and Martha's wedding photo from some of Martha's family, which made my day. Please send me a message- I would love to keep in touch with you and find out what you know about all of them! Thank you again for answering this post!

I just stumbled on your question today so someone else may have answered. Jacob John Loman, Jr. was my stepfather. He was born the 2nd of 9 children--7 boys and 2 girls. He was born in 1904 so the 1897 date for Jacob coming to the US would be more correct. I remember quite a few things about Jacob and Martha. I don't know who you're related to but Anthony (Tony) Loman has been to Syria in search of relatives. He might have more information that I would. You are free to contact me in you have questions. I'll try to answer anything I know.

I, too, have all of these names in my family. My big Sitto was Sarah Ferris/Corey/Goleb (appears differently on different documents) and she married a Maronite priest from Wadi Kannoubine named Elias Elhindi and they had 5 children, all of whom ended up in Vermont. Poor Sarah died between 1904 and 1911 and never made it over to the U.S. and consequently remains a mystery. I heard she had a first cousin named Louis Ferris that also ended up in NH/VT as well as a possible sibling named Mary Corey who married someone whose last name was Solomon, again they went to VT. I believe my Sitto's Sarah's parents names were Teresa and Ebase Corey. Can anyone explain why the Corey/Ferris/Farous, etc and all the name changes? I can see Elhindi to Hendy but Corey to Ferris? Thanks.

The family name was Jaber, but his first name was probably not his birth name. Does that help?

Thanks for your help.

Dear Tara,
I don't know if you're still interested by the information.
There are two villages called El Mohaidseh in what used to be known as Syria prior to 1918 (currently Lebanon).
I suppose your grandfather is from one of these two villages. His name & surname could be helpful in getting to know which one is his.

Did you read the death certificate?

Was anyone charged for the murder? What did the police investigation say?
