ABOU ASSALI or ASSALY

I am looking for my grandfather's family. He was born in 1878 and his parents were Miriam and Betros ABOUASSALI or ASSALY. They were from Damascus and Rasheyea-el-Wadie. They died when he was young and he then lived with an uncle, who was in the shoe business. My grandfather's name was changed when he came to America to George CORE (KOURY or KOURI). He had two sisters who lived in Ohio, Sada Afeefee and Tecla. Sada had a daughter Eva SHAHEEN and Tecla had a child, Kaleel COREY. My grandfather went to Canada first after leaving Syria, and then moved to Ohio and later to Ada, Oklahoma, where he had a store on Main Street. He married Wadia SHAMAS. Any help in finding out more about my family would be very appreciated. Thank you!

Does anyone know if you can get any records from Syria? My husband's family came from the Syria area, Farzul and Holmes or Homes(?). We have surnames of Farroh, Faroh, Aratas, Tanber and Bohlim/Bohlin although we think that they took the Bohlim name after coming to the States in 1880-1900.

Any hints would be helpful we are trying to find records on the 7th generation.

Mohammed Allay Bomrod, bio

MOHAMMED ALLAY BOMROD

Mohammed Allay Bomrod was born near Beirut in Damascus, Syria in 1895. He arrived in the Edinburg, North Dakota area in 1915, using that town as his mailing address while he traveled around Walsh, Pembina and Cavalier counties, selling his wares and working on farms during the busy seasons.

As a country peddler, he first made his route with a sack on his back selling notions, toiletries, dress goods, medicines, jewelry and other essentials.

In 1917, he bought his first horse. In 1922, his "one hoss shay" was replaced with a wagon when he bought a second horse, making a team - Bud and Biada, which he treated with utmost care. When talked sharply to them, he would say: "I'm talking Irish."

He wasn't "fussy" about where he slept, hay stacks, hay lofts, but later as he was better known, he would find lodging and a bite to eat at some farm home. For a number of years, he frequently stayed at the Sigurdson home west of Gardar.

Although he was thrifty, he was known for his kindness and generousity. During the flu epidemic of 1918, he spent weeks helping farmers who were victims of the "flu bug," never mentioning pay. He loaned money, trusted his customers when they were unable to pay. He sent much money to relatives in Syria and retained his Moslem religion by reading publications. He made regular trips to Vang on election days to mark his "X" as he had received his citizenship papers in Cavalier County. He stated it was a privilege for an American to vote.

Although he had enjoyed good health he had been the victim of several accidents, runaways and once losing all his wares when his horses stepped off a bridge crossing a flooded area.

While all his material possessions could be contained in his wagon, he stated his wealth was immeasurable.

His unfailing health permitted him to be amid the beauties of nature, the joy of music and most of all - the hundreds of friends he had acquired while living in this country.

Eventually he retired to Canada where he expected to enter a nursing home among relatives.

--page 564 Walsh Heritage, ND USA 1881-1981 Vol 1
**

If go to the Institute of Regional Studies, Fargo,ND website: www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu
you can find his Naturalization papers

BOMROD, Mathy: Syria, Oct 5, 1937, 1st papers Rolette Co, Vol D-7, p.330

BOMROD, Mathy: Syria, Oct 5, 1940, 2nd papers Rolette Co
Vol P-18, p. 255

BOMROD, Mohamed Allay: Syria, May 18, 1928, 2nd papers Cavalier Co, Vol F-22 p. 008

**NOTE: I am not related to the above person

His name is Tartoosie, you would think that would be esy enough to find but I have spent hours and hours researching and always 0 results. Maybe the name was changed once they got to Australian soil? He tells me the name originated from Syria and research has indicated it perhaps came from the name Tartous. I have researched another member of Tartoosie and discovered he served in WW1, he listed his place of birth as Mount Lebna, Syria. I thought it would be easier than my name Smith to research but I was so wrong. Can anyone help me please?

Looking for any information on the Samuel/Julia Abraham family that came from Lebanon to Clarksdale, Mississippi. I am not sure where in Lebanon, but I was told they were married there before they came to the U.S. It is also believed they had a daughter, named either Genevieve or Mary Margaret or Margaret Mary on the boat over from Lebanon in about 1914. Now we are also told this could of been from Syria as well.
We do know they had other children, Sam Jr.,(married Eugenia), Georgette (married George Adams: had sons Mickey & George Jr.), Pauline (called Polly, married Victor "Buddy" Rossi), Arthur(known as A.C. died after 1959 of t.b), Seema (married Leo Bolos), Mamie (married KJ Meena: had 3 sons Edward deceased, 2 others unkn) and Louise.
Samuel opened a store in Clarksdale, MS called Jitney Jungle Grocery Store.
If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.
Some say Samuel and Julia are from Syria, his obituary says they were married in Lebanon. We are trying to get the correct information and of course all ancestry information we can.
Thank you and I will update the information I get as soon as I can.

Can anyone tell me about the surname of Munyer? I am trying to locate immigration records from 1885, however, have been told that this may not be how the name was originally spelled. Also, my Grandfathers name was "Frank", but I can't believe that was his original name. Is there a translation I should be looking for? He came from Zahlie originally.

Trying to trace my family back to Damascus. Family name was translated in English to "Kerge". I was told by older family members, now deceased, that the name was translated from the arabic word defined as "a sack on a donkey's back" and that my ancestors were nomadic merchants. Anyone who speaks Arabic who can help translate this back to Arabic, I would appreciate it.

Anyone recognize the name - also helpful. I believe my great-grandfather, Abdo, cam to the US (possibly via Canada) around 1900.

Tracing my Syrian/Lebanese roots

I am seeking family tree information. I believe that my great-great-grandfather was Kasim (___________) Najmaldin and my great grandfather was Mohammad Kasim Najmaldin. Mohammad Kasim Najmaldin had one son who was my grandfather Dib/Theeb Mohammad Najmaldin. These names come from Lala (Syria)Lebanon. Kassim and Dib moved in the early 20th century to North America eventually ending up as merchants (fur trader) in the St. Paul, Alberta, Canada region. I am not certain, but believe Mohammad Kasim Najmaldin was married to a Saedi Tamer or Saedi Jemha living in Lala, Lebanon. Both men are deceased. Mohammad Kasim Najmaldin died in Edmonton, Alberta 1955 and Dib died in St. Paul Alberta 1976. A mystery to my family is when and why my great grandfather changed his name to James Bell when he moved to Canada. My grandfather did the same and changed his name to Peter Bell. I have yet to visit Syria/Lebanon, but have a strong desire to in the future.

My ancestors are from Syria. When they came to America, their name was changed to Younis because the immigration officers couldn't pronounce their name. I am wondering what their real last name was. Could someone please tell me of some family names the start with Y? Maybe even YOU. Anything will help. Thanx

Ghannam family on Mount of Olives

My grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from Palestine in the early part of the twentieth century. His family lived on the Mount of Olives; they were the caretakers for the Tomb of the Ascension. When he came to the U.S., his name became David Abraham. In Palestine, he was known as Daud (sp?) al Ibrahim abu Ghannam. I would appreciate any help in locating information about him, his parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.

His brother, John Abraham, also came to the U.S. Both brothers eventually settled in Pennsylvania. My grandfather ended up in Reading, PA after living in Brooklyn, N.Y. and Mahonoy City, PA. My great uncle John settled in Wilkes Barre, PA.

I am searching the Faris & Julia Otto family from Syria and wondering if it was common practice to use made up names (i.e. Otto) as the name when they couldn't pronounce it? If so, was it Otto specifically or is it just any name they chose?
I have noticed in searches that several families from Syria are named Otto. I also wonder about the name Julia - certainly not Syrian, do you think it was a made up name as well? any help appreciated.

I am trying to trace my husband's family who according to some documents found, were from Blaouza. However, I cannot seem to find any information on this area. In other documents they refer to Mount Lebanon. Can anyone help me with the distinction between the two. Also, there is much confusion as the the original name. It is believed that Mulroon was the ancestor name and americanized to Morin. However I have one document that mentions Tabgez. Do these name sound familiar to anyone? Three sons of "Mulroon" came to the U.S. around 1900s and settled in Berkshire, Massachusetts. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Dawn Morin

Abdou also had a son Michel, from which my wife decends.

This Abdou Ajami is apparently the grandson of a Ilyan Al-Hamaoui or Hamawi, and the son of Yousuf Al Ajami or Yousuf Al-Hamaoui.
Does anyone have more historical data on this family?
FOX / SEAL of Virginia

Hi there,

My husband's family oral history states that "someone" on his mother's side is Syrian. I have no more detail on location.

So here is what I have:
Mary Skirginia Seal (August 05, 1913-March 07, 1945 born in Warwick Co., VA)
d/o Berman/Burman K. Seal (b Abt. January 1889 in Shenandoah, Page Co., VA) Berman was the h/o of Ruth I. Fox (b November 1894 in VA per 1920 Census).

Ruth I. Fox was the d/o of Robert Fox (b October 1874 b in VA per the 1920 Census). Robert married Mary J. ? (b October 1873 b in VA per the 1920 Census).

I have a bit more on the Seal line - they were in Madison Co., VA in the mid 1800s.

I'm thinking that if there is a Syrian connection, it was through the "Fox" line (or the unknown "Mary J." who was the wife of Robert Fox).

Interestingly enough, before I found out about this possible connection I swore up and down that my husband had a middle-eastern connection. He looks just like a fellow in a photo from a recent edition of National Geographic - they were focusing on what "happened" to the Phoenicians! When I heard the Syrian story, I squealed and ran through the house like an idiot to tell my husband (who had no idea).

I'd welcome any suggestions on where I could start trying to pinpoint this connection.

I'm assuming that if FOX is the line I need to track, that the spelling would have changed from the original. So any name suggestions are also appreciated.

Thanks!

Tara Fields.
Grt-Grandfather's Ancestors in Syria...

My Grt-grandfather, Erastus Nebraska Edwards, bn. circa 1860 in Syria, came to the US with his brother, Peyton Edwards. Erastus, an engineer, was instrumental in the design and building of the bridges along the first Shreveport to New Orleans railroad route.

In 1882, in Caddo Parish, La., Erastus, a Christian, married Irene Victoria Duralde, whom he met in New Orleans. They raised a family of 5 sons and a daughter. In the 1890's, Erastus was employed at the Victoria Lumber Co., in Shreveport.

Peyton Edwards was married in Caddo Parish, in 1880.

I am looking for Erastus' birth place in Syria, info on his ancestors there; and info on Peyton's, descendents here, in the US. Thank you.
Loretta Edwards Pipkin

I am looking for information about the Charley Aleck family. Charley lived in Syria or Lebanon before coming to the United States. I don't know which town or city they may have lived in while living in Syria or Lebanon. I would like to trace the Aleck family as far back as I can. Charley's son Acie Aleck is my father. Catholic Charities tells me his family came from Syria. I have two sisters who have tried to get more information from both the Syrian and Lebanonise governments, but , they are not helping.

Any and all information will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Davis family of Slatington

My maternal grandmother was Norma Tabiay (Tabiki?) Davis (sometimes David or Daoud), born 1902 in Slatington, but moved after her mother's death to Mashta al-Azar. She married John (Hanna) Bashur Haddad about 1925. I don't have her mother's name, but her aunt was Umm Frenj Azar of the Khal family. She had a sister, Emma, who I believe moved to New Castle, PA. Does anyone have any information about her or her family? Thank you.

Charles / El-khal from Amar, Syria

Looking for any info on my relatives from Amar, Syria. My great-grandfather, Charles Abraham Charles (originally named Brahim El-Khal, I believe) emigrated from Amar, Syria in 1900, when he was a teenager. He settled in Allentown, PA, and worked as a laborer in Slatedale(?), then worked at Allentown Hospital, the Franklin Theater, and later owned the Charles Luncheonettes. He was a member of St. George Syrian Orthodox Church in Allentown. He had a sister in Allentown named Hasibe Elias, and his other siblings in the U.S. were Tannous (Thomas), Wardee (Rose), and Marian. His brothers Bashour and Azizie remained in Syria, and his brother Yousef went to Trinidad. Charlie, as he was known, was married to Amelia Bishwaty, and they had 4 children, Eddie, Tommy, Eleanor Durkin, and Delores Beck. Eddie lives in Whitehall and is the chairman of the Great Allentown Fair. Tommy lives in Bethlehem, PA, and Delores is in CA. Charlie also had a daughter named Arlene Jones, from a previous relationship. Charlie died in 1979, well in his 90's. Any info on Charlie, the El-khals, or Amar in general would be greatly appreciated.

Davis Family

I am still searching for information about my grandparents Charles and Stella Davis. My grandfather, Charles Davis was born 12-25-1889 in Syria and died on 2-1-1960 in Cleveland, Ohio. My grandmother Stella Cook Davis was born 6-14-1886 in Syria and died 6-1-1962 in Cleveland, Ohio. They were married in the United States. I have not been able to locate a records of their marriage. My grandfather also used the name David Charles and David Charley. My grandmother used the name Najume; they lived in New Castle PA until the early 1940's when they moved to Cleveland. The family story is that my grandmother's uncle brought her to this country. I believe his last name was Hanah and he owned a department store in Pittsburg. My grandfather is supposed to have been born in a Christian village outside of Damascus. They did not become citizens or register as aliens. There is no record of my grandfather registering for the World War 1 draft. I cannot locate them in the 1910 census. In the 1920 census they are living in New Castle under the name David Charles. In the 1930 census they are still living in New Castle but under the name Charles Davis. I have spent hours looking for them on the Ellis Island website to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Kathy
