Anthony Pascal Albina - Christian Syrian born in Jerusalem, Palestine

Classification: Query
Surnames: albina, albini, albino, abango, albango
I have hit a brick wall in researching the ancestry of my husband's great grandmother. There is no family to contact for information any longer, just a vague memory of a story that Mariam's father was a diplomat or government official in Jerusalem or Palestine but had some history in Italy.

Mariam Teresa Albina
----------------------------------
- Name: Mariam Teresa Albina
- Born: 28 Dec 1894, Jerusalem, Palestine
- Died: 1954, Riverside, California, United States
- Native Language: Arabic
- Immigration: 1909 (per census)
- Married: Hans Peder Sorensen, June 1921, Chicago

I started with the surname of Albango for Mariam, which was listed on one of her daughter's birth records. The name didn't lead anywhere. I discussed this with a friend who was born in Jerusalem and he suggested I may be successful checking the name 'Albina'. That name is what led me here.

The details for this individual are somewhat limiting. She was born in Jerusalem, spoke Arabic and was Christian. She came to the United States in 1909 per the census but no passenger record has been found. Then there is the vaguely remembered story of her father.

Anthony Pascal Albina
------------------------------------
I ended up finding numerous records, mostly passenger records, for an Anthony Pascal Albina - a Syrian man born in Jerusalem around 1873. He traveled frequently, listing his occupation as Tourism Agent, spoke multiple languages and listed his permanent address in Florence for the majority of his records. I believe this man is Mariam's father.

- Name: Anthony Pascal Albina (regularly went by A.P. Albina)
- Born: abt. 1873, Jerusalem, Palestine
- Died: unknown
- Languages: English, French, Italian
- Ethnicity: Syrian
- Physical: 5'6", Dark Complexion, Brown Hair, Brown Eyes
- Occupation: Listed as Cruise Director & Tourism Agent
- Permanent Residence: Viareggio, Tuscany (pre 1925), Florence (post 1925)
- Married: Olga LNU

He lists a 'Frank Clark' in New York as a friend on a Boston Passenger Record. For his passenger records arriving in NY he often listed his destination as the Times building. Clarks World Tours and World Tours were also listed on some records. I found passenger records from 1906 to 1933. They are the only records I found for Anthony or his wife. She is only mentioned as the nearest relative in Italy. I have no other reference/record related to her.

I have been unable to find any information directly tying Anthony to Mariam. I can't find Mariams passenger record from 1909. I can't find any information on Olga's maiden name, birthday etc. I don't know even know where these records would be considering the locations involved. Below are some mentions of the name 'A. P. Albina' found in Google that could potentially be referring to Anthony Pascal Albina.

Mentions of A. P. Albina

From 'My Trip to the Orient' by John Collinsworth Simmons:
Our interpreter and conductor was Mr. A. P. Albina, a native of Jerusalem; but while in Italy we had an Italian guide. I had not been with the party an hour until I felt perfectly at home among them,— though a "stranger, they took me in," with a cordiality and kindness that was refreshing.

From Palestine: Information with Provenance:
A.P. Albina was a Levantine Catholic merchant from Jerusalem who enjoyed good relations with senior British officials

From Britain Issues the Balfour Declaration:
"The province as we know it is not Jewish." Another dissent came from the Middle East from A.P. Albina, a Levantine Catholic merchant from Jerusalem who enjoyed good relations with top British officials.
