Re: History of Alam family

I am doing family ancestry on the Abu Allam Farah families from Furzoul al-bekka Lebanon... the orgins of the family is they are Sub-Tribe of the Banu Ghassan. There are 2 main divisions one the Banu Tamim and the other Banu Lalkhmid or (Ghassinids) originally from the Yemen (1st- 3rd Century) which were a stronghold for the Byzantine Empire (later in the 14 century) they were split into 15 Federated tribes. Look up Ghassan for Wikepedia and list the family names associated to the Banu Ghassan. The Banu Allam migrated from Yemen then to the Huran in Syria and a lot of cities, Dhou al Shwayer, Biskinta Mt.Lebanon where they liked to hunt. I was told that the Banu Allam were the first Arab tribe to become Christian. The Banu Ghassan were Greek Orthodox and then later Maronite Christians. There is still a hereditary head of the Banu Ghassan (even though not many do not adhear to his claim... His Imperial Highness Prince Gharius of Ghassan, Al-Nu'man VIII (Dr. Ahnume Guerios, Phd.) A couple of good books in reference to the Banu Ghassan are Ghassan Resurrected by Yasmine Zahran and the Lakhmids of Hira: Sons of the Water of Heaven. The Banu Allam is mentioned inPhilip K. Hitti's book "The history of the Arabs". If anyone else has any information on the Banu Allam please contact me. I am looking for information on the Farah families along with the Maloof and Sweiss Families are related in one of those Federated tribes. By the way I have contacted his Highness in regards to records of the Banu Ghassan he has none but is has written a book on Legitamecy of his Claim to the Kingdom of the Banu Ghassan which ruled for 15 centuries in as a buffer for the Byzantine Empire against the Islamic rise to power. Thanks

I am looking for realtives for a Norman George that lived in Michigan City, Indiana married to Malika Faroh (Nakid Abu Farah) and the moved back to Lebanon to the Zahle al bekaa Lebanon.

Jiddus or Georgeous are Arabic equivalents for George name... like someone said most of the names were hard to spell so they may have given that when entering the country. For example the anglonized name for my family was Bohlin(m) from the Arabic last name Abu Allam Farah... in the Lebanese dialect the A is dropped so it would become BuAllam, and the Farah became Faroh, Farrah, Faroah, Firoah, Fero, Ferro, and a host of others. You really have to research the actual given Arabic name because you will not get much except 2-3 generations in the States and be stalled trying to find ancestors in the Middle East.

Also "The Lebanon" was under Ottoman Turkish rule until there collapse. "the Lebanon was under Syrian domination as a province so you will see Lebanese cities say or immigration papers that say Turkey or Syria as home state when in fact they from Lebanon, which didn't gain independence until 1942 I believe. So the only families I know from Itoo which is Lebanon not Syria there is an Itoo Society in Peoria, Illinois not sure if they are still there as an organization but my Great Aunt Mary Jobe (Ayoub) was a member even though she was from Furzoul al Bekaa Lebanon. I hope this helps!

I dont have any documents, but my dad claimed to be descended from this clan. He said they were Lebanese Christians, descended from Crusaders who invaded and then settled centuries ago. He and his family immigrated to NY around 1913. Is that consistent with your family lore?

Hello,

they may be related but I wouldn't know for sure. My great grandmother, Jamilie, who moved to Brazil with her husband, Phillipe Kairouz, tragically died when her family was still very young.

My grandmother was separated from her father and brothers after her mothers death and sent back to Lebanon with her maternal aunt. She lost touch completely and this is why I am searching.

Do you have any information on any of the following names- Phillipe Kairouz born in Bsharre, Lebanon mid 1800's (my Great Grandfather), Jamilie (Karam) Kairouz born in an unknown location probably Bsharre, Lebanon mid to late 1800's (my Great Grandmother), Domingo Kairouz (my Great Uncle) and Mariquina (Kairouz) Tooma born Sao Paolo Brazil late 1800's (my Grandmother).

Hello Samir,

I am sad to hear about your missing family who left for Brazil. As we are from Australia and also searching for family who ended up in Brazil, we understand your quest.

We are still searching for our family. Domingo's generation was early 1900's and his father was the one who immigrated from Bsharre to Sao Paulo his generation was of late 1800's. Maybe you or someone else from Bsharre knows or has heard of them?

We believe his name was Phillipe and he had at least two sons including Domingo and a daughter named Mariquina who is my grandmother. Phillipe's wife Jamilie died in a fire and Mariquina was sent back to Bsharre with her aunt away from her father and brothers.

The aunt was a widow and was Jamilie's sister. The aunt later married a widower with a son named Peter (Boutros) Kairouz. Peter and Marquina grew up as brother and sister and ended up in South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Unfortunately, Marquina was never able to find any link to her father Phillipe or her brother Domingo in Brazil. It was her greatest wish to find her long lost family.

If you have any information please help.

I'm Nicholas Anthony Antonie great grandson of Yousef Antoon Jabbour Al Hayek he married Tahmem. his name was altered to Joseph Antonie after moving from Lebanon to South Africa in late 1800's perhaps 1888. My grandfather George Antonie was the youngest of 7. My Uncle Dudley knows much of the history and still lives in SA. I believe Antoon was the name given to our family due to the French occupancy of Lebanon. Antoon would have been the name of the Commander whom occupied our territory. My father Robert Anthony Antonie was born in the States October 22 1947 and passed July 15 2009. My grandmother Jeanette Mae told me that she and my grandfather took care of a great Uncle Habib that was older than Yousef. I live in Seattle, WA most of our family is still in Johannesburg SA. I miss them all very much. My father took me there to put a stone on his fathers grave in 1993 and we met most everyone in the family. You cannot mistake our resemblances. I have 4 children George, Charles, Sadie Mae and Rose Selim Antonie. I was born in 1977 my father in 1947. I have a brother Tim, sister Constance, and sister McCreight

Hello,
I am doing a family research project for a good friend of mine. His father, John Saady b. 1911 was born in Lebanon, and his grandfather was Raphael J. Saady b. 25 Sept 1883 Lebanon. Raphael Saady's family settled in Richmond VA and were confectioner's by trade. Raphael Saady came through Ellis Island in 1912 and then his wife Hesni and three children, Jacob, Ann, and John in 1921. I do not know yet who Raphael's father was, but Raphael had 3 brothers, George J. Saady b. 1872/1873, John J. Saady b. abt 1874, and Jacob Saady abt 1887. I have that Jacob Saady b. 1887 Beit Mounzer, Lebanon had a son, Thomas J. Saady b. 15 Dec 1912. I would love to compare family info as this is my gift to my friend Christmas.
Thank you,
Alexis A. Schultz
San Antonio, Texas
My Great Grandfather was Albert (Abdullah) Saloom (Saloum) who was born in Amioun (Amyoun), Lebanon (Syria) around 1867 and immigrated to the United States around 1885. I know his wife’s name was Foutine but I have very little information about him and my Great-Grandmother, such as birthdays, mother and father, other relatives, Foutine’s maiden name, etc. I do know that Albert and Foutine eventually went back to Amioun to live. Also, Albert had a brother Elias who was a naturalized US citizen living in Mt. Pleasant, PA and he went back to Amioun in 1942 and died there and was buried in Berbara Cemetery. I am taking an educated that Albert died in 1942 or 1943. I know of a sister, Badra who married Sami Ghantous. My Saloom relatives in the US lived in Mt. Pleasant, PA and Johnstown, PA. Does anyone have any information on the Saloom/Salloum family tree from Amioun, Lebanon or know of anyone whom I could contact and if they have an email address

Her first name was either
Katar or Miriam. She was born about 1877. She immigrated to the US in 1921 using a cousin's last name Yasbek. In the US she used her married name Mary Bashoor.

Her father was Elias Hallak and her mother was Anna Saab. Do you know of any family from Lattakia?

Hi Mathilda,

Many Thanks for your Posting...

Your Grandmother, Violette Frangie, on the Klimos Tree is Violette Frangie, Born About 1932, Daughter of Fouad Frangie and Bahige Regina of Greek Orthodox Religion, registered and identified in File #477 in the Beirut Province, Beirut 1 Caza, City of Rmeil.

It is unlikely that there is a relation between Violette and our tree in the current generation, but this is not to say that there is no relation many generations back. I can see that your Great Grandfather Fouad's bloodline is El-Badoui, then Youssef, then El-Badoui again, then Sleiman, then Aghnatious, then Moussi, then Antonious, then Youssef, then Girgis - If we used an average age for them all, the names would take you back a very long time... None of those names correlate with names on our tree, however, I have no names for any siblings of my Great Grandfather and above, so it may be possible that a link could be found somewhere along the bloodline which would be amazing if we can find one...

Do you have any more information about the Frangie portions of your family tree at all that may help with identifying a link? If you send me your email, I'm happy to give you access to our tree and see if there's any identifying names that may help identify a link.

Talk soon!

Cheers,
Ray.

Hello...I came across your posting this afternoon with my first cousin on my maternal side whose last name is Hawa. My mother was Alice Hawa and her father was Michel Jospeh Hawa, and it is our belief that his family came from Palestine originally. His family consisted of 2 other male siblings, not sure of their names, and his family migrated to Beirut,Lebanon in the 1860 time frame and he migrated to America in 1906 arriving at the port of Charleston,S.C without his spouse Olga nee Aramaan or Arraman. Eventually Olga came to the US with her two sisters Tamaam and (not sure other sister)Olga and Michael Joseph Hawa had four children Edward (1912) George Michael(1914) Alice( my mother 1916) and Eleanor (1919).we beieve they were all born in Brooklyn but they spent perhaps 8 years residing in Florence,S.C. before moving to Brooklyn, NY. settling somewhere in brooklyn heights/Atlantic Avenue/Boerum Hill.

Perhaps you may know whether the Abul Hawa family was related to our Hawa family. If you would be willing to share some of the information that you possess going back six generations, and there is a relationship that would be wonderful. My mother Alice Hawa married my father Philip
Katen original name Khatan in 1941. Philip katen emigrated
to the US in 1929 at age 19 and lived in Brooklyn when he met my mother, whose father Michael Joseph died in 1948. Olga hawa predeceased Michael in 1940. Thank you for any information you could share. Roger Katen

Original Kurdish Surname Family :
Earlier presence of the Kurds in Lebanon dates back to the arrival of the Ayyubids in the
12th century, as well as to those families that were sent to Lebanon by the Ottomans to maintain
order in various parts of the empire. These Kurdish families settled in and ruled many areas of
Lebanon for long periods of time. Examples of these families include: the Ayyubis, the Sayfa
emirs (princes) in Tripoli, the Mir‘bi family in ‘Akkar, the Junblats and the ‘Imads in Mount
Lebanon, and the Hamiyeh family in Baalbeck. Detached from their homeland for many
generations, these Kurdish families became fully integrated into Lebanon’s social and political
structure and have centuries ago been completely assimilated.

Name, Date of Birth (Approximate), Date of Immigration to Argentina (Approximate), any other information?

Any information may help us determine where on the tree your grandfather may be...

Cheers,
Ray.

Hello, my grandfather left Lebanon/Syria and immigrated to Argentina. I don't have the exact city where he was born. But, I understand he was a first cousin of the old Lebanese president.

I guess the last name changed happened upon arrival to Argentina and wrote it down as it sounds, I have no clue.
Disgracefully, I never had the chance to ask my grandfather.

I would love to find how many more relatives are in the world.

Thank you.
