If so, does anyone know what it was before it became "George" in America.

Thanks,
Joe George

Researching Lebanese Families in SC for Thesis

I am a graduate student in History at Clemson University
in South Carolina. I am writing my thesis on
the families that came from Lebanon and arrived in
South Carolina before about 1949. I have been doing
research for my thesis since January and have
accumulated quite a bit of material, but still have
some questions -- and might be able to provide
some answers.

I do not have any Lebanese heritage, but I have been
doing family history since 1984 and became interested
in the Lebanese community in South Carolina after
finding out that my part of South Carolina has a large
Arab-American Catholic community. (I am a convert
to Catholicism and occasionally attend Maronite
Mass.)

I am aware that there are many Lebanese descendants
here in South Carolina who are Protestant, and I would
like to hear from you, too.

Thank you for your time.

Elizabeth Whitaker
whitake@clemson.edu
Any info would be helpful. Also looking for translation into Arabic of surname "Kerge", supposidly pronounced (phoentically) "kurridsh"?
BABY GIRL UP FOR ADOPTION JUNE/JULY 1959 IN LEBANON

Did you put a newborn big brown eyed, dark brown curly haired baby girl up for adoption at Creche St. Vincents in Lebanon in June or July of 1959????

Hello,

I was born in Lebanon in 1959 and left in an orphanage named Creche St. Vincent. I believe the orphanage named me Faride on my certificate.
(It is now Frieda)
Thanks to Fathr Bodie Essa, and Sister Bassoul, I was adopted by an American family, at the age of 19 months and brought to America where I still live.
I am in search of possible half brothers and sisters as I understand that I was possibly the first child born to this woman.
The names on my records state Mahel as my biological last name...Gabriel, as my biological father...and Theresa, as my biological mother. I am not certain how true these names are though.
I was told that I am a full blooded Lebanese and that I supposedly have royalty in my family blood line. I really not even sure what that means...
My USA parents are very good to me, so please do not misunderstand my reason for my search.
There are two reasons I am searching...
Firstly, I am looking for my siblings to gain a bond with them. I am ill and wish to do this before I am too ill to seek this out. I am 48 1/2 years old.
Secondly, I wish to find medical records too, as to possibly give me insight on my families medical history...and possibly help me with my current illness.
Should anyone feel that they have information or leads for me to find my biological siblings please contact me...Your input is always welcome.

Thank you and have a great day!
Faride/Frieda

Abraham Family from Lebanon

Looking for any information on the Samuel/Julia Abraham family that came from Lebanon to Clarksdale, Mississippi. I am not sure where in Lebanon, but I was told they were married there before they came to the U.S. It is also believed they had a daughter, named either Genevieve or Mary Margaret or Margaret Mary on the boat over from Lebanon in about 1914. Now we are also told this could of been from Syria as well.
We do know they had other children, Sam Jr.,(married Eugenia), Georgette (married George Adams: had sons Mickey & George Jr.), Pauline (called Polly, married Victor "Buddy" Rossi), Arthur(known as A.C. died after 1959 of t.b), Seema (married Leo Bolos), Mamie (married KJ Meena: had 3 sons Edward deceased, 2 others unkn) and Louise.
Samuel opened a store in Clarksdale, MS called Jitney Jungle Grocery Store.
If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.
Some say Samuel and Julia are from Syria, his obituary says they were married in Lebanon. We are trying to get the correct information and of course all ancestry information we can.
Thank you and I will update the information I get as soon as I can.
I am working on a family tree for the Milkie (Melki, Milki, and spelled mim-lem-kef-ye in Arabic) family from Bishmizzine. Earliest known ancestor was Elias Milkie, late 18th century. My great grandfather was Abdullah Milkie, grandson of Elias. Would appreciate any info or contact from currently unknown relatives.

Have info on US branches, but can always use more.

I know of an Australian branch, and have some contact.

There is an Argentinian branch, descended from Anisseh Milkie (b. about 1880-95?, died in late 60's or early 70's) from Bishmizzine, about which I would like any info or contact possible.

There are some Milkies left in Lebanon, and would appreciate any info and contact from them, too.
Albert Family from Lebanon, to Ironwood, Michigan, USA

Hello All!

I am searching for the Albert family from Lebanon, specifically the immediate family and ancestors of George Albert (B: 1888, Lebanon; D: 1970, Ironwood, Michigan).

What I know is that George married Lulu Hyder (or Hydar) c. 1910 and had ten children, all born in Ironwood, Michigan. George owned and operated Albert's Clothing Store in Ironwood, Michigan... the store just recently closed in the last ten years. George also had a brother Mose (or Moses) who owned a jewelry store, also in Ironwood, Michigan.

There is a colorful family story that as a young man, George left Lebanon by stowing away in the cargo hold of a ship. However, that's where the story ends. Before opening his own store, he supposedly worked for a railroad to save up money to bring other members of his family to the US. I don't know if anything predating the opening of the store is true.

I can find George in the 1920 and 1930 US Federal Censuses, but before that, it's a mystery. I would like to find out when he immigrated to the United States, where exactly he was from in Lebanon and any info on additional family members. Also, I would like to know if "George Albert" was his given name or Americanized name.

Any ideas? Your posts are sincerely appreciated!

Thanks!

Hyder / Hydar Family from Lebanon, to Ironwood, Michigan, USA

Hello All!

I am searching for the Hyder/Hydar family from Lebanon, specifically the immediate family and ancestors of Lulu G. Hyder Albert (B: 1896, Lebanon; D: c.1960, Ironwood, Michigan).

What I know is that Lulu married George Albert c. 1910 and had ten children, all born in Ironwood, Michigan. Lulu had a sister named Hazel, who lived with them for a while. Lulu may also have had a brother named Nick.

I can find Lulu in the 1920 and 1930 US Federal Censuses, but before that, it's a mystery. I would like to find out when she immigrated to the United States, where exactly she was from in Lebanon and any info about additional family members. Also, I would like to know if "Lulu Hyder" was her given name or her Americanized name.

Any ideas? Your posts are sincerely appreciated!

Thanks!

Hasroun families-Abdoo, Ishakk

I'm researching ancestors from Hasroun and have come across a web site that says there are four main families in Hasroun (Assemani, Alafarita, Awad and Hawarina). There is a chart naming the four families, with a list of family names in each column. What exactly does this mean? The names Abdo, Abdou and Ishakk appear in the Alafarita column, but none of the people have an Alafarita last name.
Can someone explain this system to me?

I'm also seeking information on Abdoo and Ishakk families from Hasroun. They moved to the U.S. around 1910 and before.

Thank you.
Mitch

Looking for Aun & George (Girgis?) families from Hamate & Wajh al-Hajar

Hello, I am looking for the Aun & George (Girgis?) families from Hamate & Wajh al-Hajar. My great grandfather's name is Habib Ibrihim Aun and he was born in 1901 in Hamate, Lebanon. He died there in 1929 or 1930 after getting ill on ship to the US and being deported. I am also looking for his wife's family who were from Wajh al Hajar (just a couple of miles west of Hamate on the coast in N. Lebanon). Their names were Nasif George (or Girgis?)who was born in 1882 and immigrated in 1901 to US - and his wife Dalia Gabriel (unsure of her name). I have someone who can translate for me if need be but don't even know where to start. Any idea of how to gain census records or who I should talk to? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

My great grandfather was Najeeb Basha and his father was Tanuis Basha. They both immigrated to the US in around the 1880's. They were from Baalbak and I have a family tree that lists several of their ancestors. The earliest one listed is Hajj Elias Basha.
My great grandmother was Najeeby Basha. She and her family immigrated to the US in 1892. Her father was Habeeb Srour and her mother was Almas Belish. It is said that the reason they came to the US was to enter Habeeb's candy and arrak drink in the Chicago World's Fair. He is said to have won first prize and that there is a plaque in Zahle were they came from that commemorates the event. Does anyone know anything about these families?

My family, a century ago, lived in the mountains at the line of the cedars, in Lebanon (the old country). We have, in the early century lived in Birmingham and in Mexico. But long since, we all now live in Mobile, Alabama. My family ties into the following: Betro, Mizzerani, Zabour, Khourie, Tanorie. Most of us have a dark complection, but green eyes/blonde hair come out on few. We come from a long line of powerful people. -The absolute best in all sports! We are generous, intelligent, healthy people who love to eat. We pride ourselves as respectable, conscientious people.

Long ago-Khourie somehow transmuted into Betro..and then...Petro.

Family(main): Peter Paul Petro and Mary Petro Petro,

children:Paul,Louis,Anthony(Tony),Gene,Rosemarie,Ricky

Hello,
I am attempting to find information on my grandfather, whose full name I believe was Abdul Karim Ahmed Omer Issa. So far all I've been able to discern is that he came to the US about 1913 and changed his name to Albert Karim Omer. I know he came from Al-Karoon, but looking at the Castle Garden and Ellis Island websites, I'm unable to locate exactly when he came and what ship he arrived on. When websites ask for a surname, do I use Issa?
Thanks-
Marcia

My ancestors came to America from Lebanon around 1890 and settled in the Akron, Ohio and Roanoke, Virginia area. If the names Fannie Maloof (1891-1962), Michael George Attalla (1887-1960), George Attalla, or Ernest Elias Jabbour and Labebe (Noumair) Jabbour sound familiar to anyone, I'd like to hear from you.

There is a section on Domt House and Domt bin Eissa Moussa Shedid who had 5 sons, Anton, Mikhail, Tanous, Hanna and Khairallah. Some their offspring ended up in Los Angeles.

Surname Research

I am doing research on these family surnames for genealogical purposes. I am interested in any information on any similar surnamed individuals or families. The linkage from Lebanon is via Canada, Mexico, Texas, and South America. Common ancestor is Simon Francis Abouhaidar.
Looking for Schwairy

My great uncle, Charles Saba, came to America in the early 1900's and became a tailor in Denver, Colorado. He went back to Syria/Lebanon and returned with his sister,(my grandmother)Annie who married a Lebonese gentleman named Schwairy. They had 3 children, Edward? who died as a young fireman, Clara who married a Chuck Reid and my father, William Joseph Schwairy. My father married Joyce Evelyn Berndt and they had four children. Debra Schwairy (married to Peter Bergmann), Kenneth Edward Schwairy (married to Julie Bostrom), William Joseph Schwairy (single, living in Denver) and me Jana Kay Schwairy (married to Jack Vandelaar and living in Key Largo, Florida)
We're just trying to find family that would tie in with ours. Thanks.

Najmaldin/Dib/Dieb/Deib

I am seeking family tree information. I believe that my great-great-grandfather was Kasim (___________) Najmaldin and my great grandfather was Mohammad Kasim Najmaldin. I know Mohammad Kasim Najmaldin had one son who was my grandfather Dib Mohammad Najmaldin. These names come from Lala Lebanon near Zahle. Kassim and Dib moved in the early 20th century to North America eventually ending up as merchants (fur trader) in the St. Paul, Alberta, Canada region. I am not certain, but believe Mohammad Kasim Najmaldin was married to a Saedi Tamer or Saedi Jemha living in Lala, Lebanon. Both men are deceased. Mohammad Kasim Najmaldin died in Edmonton, Alberta 1955 and Dib died in St. Paul Alberta 1976. A mystery to my family is when and why my great grandfather changed his name to James Bell when he moved to Canada. My grandfather did the same and changed his name to Peter Bell. I would be honored to correspond about Lala and the Bekka Valley as I have yet to visit, but have a strong desire to in the future.
