Old photos from Iraq 1920

I have three photos taken by my father in Iraq between 1920 and 1925.
1) Eddie Ross in uniform maybe in the Royal Engineers
2) Sgt Piggot in uniform dated 1920 unknown unit
3) Eddie Ross grave marker

My father was in the RASC in Iraq and he took lots of photos he did not however really explain who these people were.
Does anybody out there have any possible links to them.

Hi.There was a very famous bookshop in Baghdad called Mackanzie's. The owner, Kenneth Mackenzie was born in 1880 and died in Baghdad in 1946 of a heart attack. He had come to baghdad around 1918 after wounds he sustained in France during WW1. He first opened the so-called Government Bookshop but later he recalled it Mackanzie & Mackanzie Bookshop. The other mackenzie was Donald who was the brother of Kenneth's wife. He was known as a left-wing man who played a rol in spreading Marxism in Baghdad. Iraqis, including myself feel indebted to their brilliant contribtion to our cultural life over a period spanning from 1918 to around 1960. I would be very grateful if you could send me a photograph of both of them or any further data.

I live in Lebanon since 1995, my two unmarried sisters still live in Baghdad while my third sister lives in Ohio.
I have three children two girls at college and a son 12 years old.

Hi, I am Adel son of late Roger, your grandfather is my father's uncle.
My dad Roger passed away last May, while still in Iraq with my unmarried two sisters, My uncle Alfred in UK while younger uncle Stanley in USA, my aunts Yolland and Elizabeth in UK, Justine in USA, Pouline in Holland while Mirielle, Hilda, Sylvine are all deceased.

I am sorry.I did not want to take up your valuble time on your board; but I wanted to ask a general question if you don't mind. I have been studying the Middle East for a long time. Mostly Ancient Mesopotamia. Akkad and Sumeria.

The question I wanted to ask you. How far back and I am not asking you your business; but how far back can you go in your family line. Your people and your country has been around since and there is no time to add to my statement. If you don't mind asking. It is just out of curiosity. In the United States it is a fairly new country as a country; but a very old country when it comes to the Indian Tribes who have been here with no time line attached to it. It is believed that people from Asia and Africa crossed over through Russia and then down through Alaska and spread out into Canada and now what is known as the United States of America. It is also believed a lot of migration from South America up through North America

I am sorry. If you would be so kind as to anything you could enlightenm me on as to my basic question. I would appreciate it very much. God Bless and God Speed.

My dad's family is called Telchie (the Arabic word for "telegrapher") and my mums family is called Sukkar (the Arabic word for "sugar")

Possible well known figures from these families include Mr George Habib George (English teacher) and Doctor Basima Sukkar (Gynaecologist).

Hello I wonder if anyone can help with a Donald M MacKenzie who was born in Gairloch Scotland and I think went to Bagdad after WW1 he also died there I am told. I have found someone with the right name who had a bookshop and was a Socialist but I do not know if it is one and the same person. Any help would be great

I have a photo postcard from 1913 of a gentleman, stately pose. It's signed in Syriac or Assyrian text on the back as a gift to someone in my family Abraham Shalitta [Shomon or Simon]. The man's name is Babo Geverges - this has been translated for me. I believe he may be related to the current day Giwargis families and am looking for help identifying the other photo postcards accompanying it, there are two of beautiful Assyrian ladies. Hello,

My ancestors were from the villages of Urmia, Persia. I have been told that they lived in Diza or Deza and Ardishai (sp?). Before residing in Persia they were from Assyrian villages in Iraq, but I don't know where.

They left Persia during the genocides during WWI era and came to Ellis Island, stayed in NY a short time and settled in Philadelphia. Eventually some made their way to California.

I am seeking family members for any of the following surnames so that we may exchange histories, recipes, and family photos, stories...

Glad to know that we have a family abroad, Nouri my grandfather passed away long time ago (1974) while living in the UK, my grandmother passed in 1990, My dad Roger, uncle Alfred are still living in Baghdad while my eldest uncle Stanley moved last year to Florida.
I am living in Lebanon since 1995, while my two sisters Lamia and Janan with my father in Baghdad. My oldest sister Lydia moved to Ohio-US last year with her husband and son.
I Will be more than happy to hear from you all.

My name is Sandy, my dad is Shawqi and he lives in kent. I have 4 other sisters, Paulette, Geraldine, Amanda and Miranda. My dad talks alot about Nouri but I didnt know about you. My dad wasn't sure if Nouri was still alive.. Are you in the UK?

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, we are family and my mum often talked about her uncle Nouri and so I think your dad ,Alfred and Stanley were her cousins. I hope they are all ok in Baghdad.

Unfortunately, I have bad news to pass on as my mum, Eleanor, passed away in April. It was all very sudden and mum was youngish-71 - so we are still quite traumatised and I miss her very much. Her brother Shawqi(Joe) and sisters Betty, Solange and Primrose are still alive. Mum was buried in the same cemetry outside Andover as her mum, Kamil, my grandma. Primrose is in the US and I spoke to her when all this happened .The others are fine and because of all this ,I have been spending more time with my cousins.

I am Adel, member of the Lassow family originaly from Iraq, your grand father Fram is my dad's uncle.
Fram is Nouri Lassow's brother whom is my grandfather.
My uncles are Alfred and Stanly, My father and uncle Alfred still lives in Baghdad while my uncle Stanley lives in Florida, all my aunts (13 members) some were deseased others live in UK, USA, Holland.

It has given me a place to start and it's quite strange really because my family and I have just spent a month in NZ and are currently being processed for residency. Only last night I was looking at a job in Auckland....weird or what!

I am looking for Hadi (may be Hady) Al Rikabi (again not sure of spelling) who was a student in the North East of England , possibly Middlesborough, in or around 1965. He would have known the Bowe Family and particularly Judy or Judith. It is possible he returned to middle east in 1965 or soon after, or he may have stayed in England. I understand his family were professional people, doctors or dentists and he himself may have been studying medicine in the UK.

Appologise for thread title and first post, i was having trouble so this is only a test attempt to get error codes.

I am new here, and thinking of doing the DNA test mainly out of curiousity to see if I'm related to any famous Iraqi characters, and for how long my ancestors have been in Iraq, ie. from Mesopotamian times, Arab expansion, Persian/Sassanid empire times etc...
I am just wondering if anyone else did this, and if it helped, and how clear it is. Also are there any other ways to trace Iraqi amily history far back.

This came across me four years too late so I don't know if I'll get a reply. I am tryingto put together some geneology for my children. Their father is Talal Hannosh, from Bagdhad. He came to Mi. in about 1985. His fathers name was Yacoub Haba Hannosh. He recently had a cousin Basim or Kamal Hannosh who recetly passed of cancer. I know he was from Tel Kief. I also know Talal's grandfathers name was Dauod. There must be a connection. Please email me with any info you have. I have three children with Talal, all girls. Talia, Lina, Liliah. I'm Vincent (Mansour) Abbosh. I was born in Aleppo - Syria in 1970. I have moved to Australia in 1997 and now living on the GoldCoast and working as software engineer at IBM's Tivoli lab. I have two kids, Alex (5) and Sarah (3).
I have one younger sister, Joelle, who lives in Denmark and my father name is Samir Abbdullah Abbosh who was born in Aleppo in 1945.
My grand father, Mansour, was born in 1915 in Mardeen and lived most of his life in Aleppo with his wife Jennet and had four daughters and one son (my father).
All what I know about our family in Iraq is that my grand father's brother, John and his cousin Badee as well as my grand grand father name, Esperidon.
Glad to hear that I have larger family elsewhere :-) please keep in touch.

Hi Kelly my name is Paul Abbosh my father is Ghazi Abbosh son of Najeeb Abbosh we lived in Baghdad and moved to the UK in the early 70's. The American Abbosh families in Michigan and Florida are descended from my dads first cousins as they were all sons and Daughters of Afif and Mania Abbosh (Henry, Faraj, Jewel, Nannette and Vera).

Afif is my fathers uncle. My parents (Ghazi and Barbra Abbosh) and brother (Andrew Luay) and I plus our respective families all live in the UK in Surrey and Dorset although I am now working in Dubai in the united Arab Emirates. I have three sons and my brother two plus one daughter. This is the Uk branch of the family.
