There are Jemo surnames in my husband's side of the family. I was told that the surname was originally Dziama which was spelled Jemo because it sounded that way. In my research, I have discovered that the family came from
Galicia and was Ruthenian. An 1836 map shows
Galicia situated above northern Hungary and below southern Poland. I believe some of former
Galicia is now part of Slovakia. Being Ruthenian means they were what was formerly known as
Greek Catholic- now Byzantine rite Catholic. If any of your family is from
Hazleton, PA, then we probably have some family in common.
