MENGEL KLARA died in 1913. in Žabalj, she was at the time married to FREIBURGER MARTON and his parish of origin is listed as Žabalj. She is from Vrbas.

You can obtain her official death certificate from either the Roman Catholic Church in Žabalj or the municipal office (civil registrar). That is also where you can obtain information about location where she is buried.

Original church vital records for Žabalj and Vrbas are also available via Kalocsa diocese e-archive. I suggest you register with them if you want to research more on these families.

Birth, marriage and death records are for Žabalj available for the period 1826-1922 and are found under the name of the town in Hungarian language - ZSABLYA.

Birth, marriage and death records for Vrbas are under ÚJVERBÁSZ name and are available for the period 1875-1943.

Website of this e-archive and information about registering:

http://archivum.asztrik.hu/?q=en/oldal/registration

-att: death record for Mengel Klara, Žabalj 1913., (then) Austria-Hungary, (now) Serbia, obtained via Kalocsa diocese e-archive

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com

There are two listings in the Totenbuch der Donauschwaben - records of the death of PETER MERKL, from Miletić, born in 1912. and missing in 1944.

http://www.totenbuch-donauschwaben.at/de/

If that is the birth year of your Peter Merkl and he is the father of your Josef Merkl, I attached the birth records of the only Peter Merkl born in Miletić in 1912. This original record has information on the parents of Peter Merkl: Michael Merkl and Kata Breitenbach.

Birth, marriage and death records for Miletić of Roman Catholic Church are available online via Kalocsa diocese e-archive and they cover the period 1826-1922. In these records the village is listed under its name in Hungarian language - MILITICS :

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/forum/vojvodina/kalocsa-roman-cat...

Let me know if you need further assistance and if this Peter Merkl born in 1912. is the right person you need as the starting point for your research.

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com
All original church vital records of all religious communities in Serbia have been in 2012 returned from the state archives to the original authors - central church administrators like dioceses and eparchies. In only a small fraction of cases have these original records been microfilmed and are still available for research in the archives.

I suggest that based on the religion of your ancestors, and the parish they belonged to, you contact the appropriate church authority for a look-up - I helped with several such requests last year to translate the communication and church charges a significantly smaller fee for this service than any agency. In some cases they do not charge a fee at all, but a customary thing is that you leave or direct a small donation to the parish temple of your ancestors.

Parish priest will also be able to help you with getting in touch with the descendants of the same family or community who either live there or have visited.

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com

@Jackie:

Please provide more information so that I can assist you more - birth years of your ancestors, the year they emigrated, whether anyone got married in the old country before leaving (if yes, when).

Kalocsa diocese e-archive has full records of the Roman Catholic Church for Plavna parish available online for the period 1826-1922 (birth, marriage and death records). To view and research digital images of the original records you must register with them for a paid service package.

Also available are records for Mladenovo( Bukin), for the same period.

In this archive the parish records are listed under the place-names in Hungarian language:

-Dunabökény (Mladenovo, Bukin)
-Palona (Plavna)

More on this e-archive you can read here:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/forum/vojvodina/kalocsa-roman-cat...

If you provide more information I will locate at least one of the records for your ancestors from these records and post it here so that you can use it as a starting point - best for that are marriage records, because in them there is information on the parents of bride and groom, their age when they got married and also the name of the parish or village where they were born.

There are several KULUNCSICH births registered in the village of Plavna for the period of 1880-1890 I looked into. In these birth records the parish of origin of the KULUNCSICH father is listed as Karavukovo village ( BÁCSORDAS)

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com

Dear David. Thank you for the information on these Protestant Uhriks. It all sounds very interesting. When you are able, any informtion you can give me would be greatly appreciated. If you are busy with school I understand. Just so you know, I am writing you from Windsor, Ontario Canada. The last of my Lamos uncles was not aware of this information either. As far as you know are you related to my grandmother Pauline Uhrik's family? Her father was Carl and her mother Thereza. The children were Carl Junior, Pauline, Emma, Irene and Tereza. I also know the names of some of the people they married. I also noticed on Google that there is a young D.J. from Star Pazova who is also a Uhrik.

Thank you for your information. Good Luck with your studies.

Susan Lamos Prieur

Well, I don't know whether there is any kind of information in other languages. I digged in history of our village in archive of the town Vsetin and from book released on universary of our village Hostalkova (Vsetin district).
During 18th century were members of Uhriks family organising protestant (christian) meetings and were involved in invitig foreign prechers. Catholic church was persecuting tham. Several years before Patent of toleration was released, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_of_Toleration
some meeting was revealed and 32 people send to exil (possibly romania or hungaria or...) In historical document I found only 12, but it is possible, that more went to exil or some children were not counted. I can write you exact names when returning home.I am now out for my studies (theological - that is why I came across that story).
David Uhrik
It would be really interesting if you could tell me how you know that 12 members of the Urhik family were deported into Banat. Have you any names or the reasons they were deported? If you can give me a source I could try to use Google Translate to help me.

I can only tell you that my grandmother was Paulina Uhrik and she was born to Carl and Thereza in 1905 in Stara Pazova. She had some siblings: Carl Junior, Emma, Thereza and Irene. That is about all I know.
Hallo,
concernig Uhrik family, there is a possibility that comes originally from Czech Republic. You write, that you are looking for an information, but I do not know, if this is the kind of information You want. In case you do, and you are digging into this history, than one way is to concentrate on year 1780 when about 12 members of Uhrik family were deported into Banat (romania) of other parts of Transylvania...
Regards,
David Uhrik (asrdce@seznam.cz)

Prapotnik, Yugoslavia

I'm trying to find the location of a town where an ancestor was born and raised and which he left to come to the US. His nationality is given a Croatian. The town, from 1891 to 1913 or a little later, was called Prapotnik, Yugoslavia. Spelling of the town varied. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for any information on Wechselberger, Flick, and Meisner families in Vojvodina. Some of the family members lived in Kikinda. My grandfather was Joseph Wechselberger (1881-1951) and my grandmother was Elizabeth Meisner Wechselberger (1890-1959). They immigrated to the USA in 1905. Elizabeth's father was named Josef Mesiner and she had a brother Peter Meisner. Joseph's parents were Kristof and Terezia Flick Wechselberger (1853-1928). Terezia and Kristof also had two daughters, Elizabeth (born 1892) and Sophia (1885-1939), both of whom immigrated to the USA. Terezia had at least three brothers: Frank Flick (Ferencz), Michael Flick (Michaly), and Joseph Flick (born 1856). Their father's name was Frank Flick. Terezia Flick Wechselberger and Joseph Flick both immigrated to the USA in the early 1900s.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Land reforms as they were called by the monarchy authorities included the stripping of the land from its original owners ( Serbs and other domicile Eastern Orthodox/Slavic population who were awarded land as bordersmen in the Military Frontier province in earlier centuries) as well as their subsequent resettling within the region to less fertile parts.

The parts that were earlier deemed uninhabitable due to Ottoman presence and incursions were also settled during the land reforms.

Land was awarded to the new settlers ( your ancestors among them), and that is well documented too. The other set of colonization documents includes charters and lists of individual plots that were awarded to these new colonists. Also of interest to you would be a thorough research of the land owners registers and military service records for that period which are located in the Kikinda town regional state archive I mentioned earlier.

A more detailed lookup would warrant both a thorough examination of available archival holdings and contacting the museum and archive in person.

For more historical information on the region I suggest the official history guide to Vojvodina region as an objective and balanced resource. I know it is available in all official languages of the province ( Serbian, Hungarian, German, Romanian and several more) but you will have to contact the publisher to see if it is available in English version too.

link to .pdf brochure in Serbian :

http://www.puma.vojvodina.gov.rs/dokumenti/projekat/Kviz/Kol...

link to web text version in Serbian (more Google Translate friendly) :

http://www.sluzba.vojvodina.gov.rs/SEKRETARIJATI-V/MANJINE/m...

Publisher: Pokrajinski sekretarijat za manjine

http://www.puma.vojvodina.gov.rs/

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en
Hey, sorry to reopen this old thread, but I'm having trouble finding information on Austro-Hungarian land reforms and colonization of the Mokrin area in the 19th century. I think this would be a useful topic for me to explore since my ancestor was born in Mokrin but his family came from Brno. Can you maybe elaborate a little on what you mean by land reform, or provide some links.

Thanks,
Andrew

*Greek Catholic* records for PULA are actually mostly Serbian Orthodox sailors military death records 1880-1885.

The heritage museum in Mokrin can give you information about mentions of your family in village history books, property and merchant records, their status and involvement in local village organization, location of ancestral home, headstones that exist in the local cemetery. However, they do not have the vital records - civil vital records are kept by municipal offices.

Church vital records - the original books- of all religions have been returned by the state of Serbia last year to its original authors - in your case, that would be the Roman Catholic diocese that includes the temple where your ancestors were baptized&married. Contact them directly and ask for help and information - remember, reasonable donation to the church you are contacting is a customary thing over here that makes receiving answers easier.

http://www.catholic-zr.org.rs/eng/eng.html

The original church vital records have also been microfilmed by the historical archives and are available to be viewed and researched in the archives in Serbia.

I see no listing of Roman Catholic vital records or microfilms in the Kikinda archive, but you need to contact them and ask specifically - all websites and listings of archival collections in Serbia are in dire need of updating. :)

Archive in Kikinda have records of the Roman Catholic schools for Kikinda and Mokrin, which will have info on your ancestors - for every student, a personal entry would include names of parents, address, birth year, and school reports.

Also of interest if your ancestors migrated to the area during the Austro-Hungarian land reforms would be their collection of the colonization documents 1849-1871.

Serbian Genealogy Society SGS "Rodoslovlje"
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

You seem to know a lot about the region. My great great grandfather Anton Haimann (Sometimes written Antal Haymann) was born in Mokrin Feb 23, 1866 to Simon Haymann and Terez Libozky. I was planning on asking if it was possible to get a birth record. FYI They were Roman Catholics.

Do you know if such church records are available or even accessible? Is it worth contacting him?

I do not know whether he speaks English. There is no email or website contact for the museum but Mr. Badrljica is on Google+ and Picasa web albums, so try to find and contact him there via comment or message on the links I posted.

Also, if you are writing with questions or queries, consider a cultured reasonable donation to the Mokrin Heritage Museum in return for the information.

Let me know if you need more assistance or wish to contact the museum in Serbian language, I will translate and forward the correspondence- this may be the better option, usually the answer you receive in English is never as detailed as in the native language. :)

Serbian Genealogy Society SGS "Rodoslovlje"
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en
He married someone with a name Yella ( do not know if it was maiden last name or if it was her first name. Where did the Ordinacev name originate? How long had they been in the area? Tosa had atleast two sons, Marko( emigrated to America)and a second son who stayed behind. Any more children? Any information on the Family of Antic ( Maybe from the Village of Djurdjevo)I was told a number of the Ordinacev family migrated to Montaneagro (I know the spelling is wrong) Thanks for any information.

No information from any past census of the population is available due to privacy laws, except for the Austro-Hungarian censuses (1828, 1869) and earlier population and tax lists.

The church vital records of the Serbian Orthodox Church for the surnames you are researching exist. You need to contact the state historical archives and municipal offices, as well as the church because the original vital records have been returned to them last year.

Serbian genealogy Society SGS "Rodoslovlje"
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

"For now, I will assume the Dusan born in 1935 is a son and the Dusan born in 1900 to be the father who was killed in the war. "

I am afraid that your assumption is wrong. Name of the father is listed for this boy - it is RANKO.

Also, ethnic Serbs traditionally almost never named a son after their father - except in special circumstances, as an *ultimate* protective name after losing (many) children at an early age, especially sons.

If you are going to make any assumptions, then the assumptions should be according to the naming customs and patterns exactly the opposite - that DUŠAN was in most cases not the son of a DUŠAN.

These are the only two people from Sremska Mitrovica municipality who were killed in war with first name DUŠAN and surname resembling the ones you posted of adequate age :

Stanišić (Jovan) Dušan,
rođen 1884.
Srbin,
ubijen od ustaša 1942. u masovnom pokolju u Sremskoj mitrovici
(6002s00586),
He was from the village LEŽIMIR

and

Stanković (Gliša) Dušan,
rođen 1893.
Srbin,
umro 1942. na prinudnom radu, Bijeljina
(0602072008)
He was from the village SREMSKA RAČA

Surname ORLOVIĆ was present in the village LEŽIMIR.

Serbian Genealogy Society SGS "Rodoslovlje"
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

There are many surnames of this ethnicity that were mistranscribed from the Cyrillic Old Church Slavonic original by the AU authorities and these mistakes often ended up in the civil vital records as valid surnames , in the military service records, passports and the travel documents too.

There's also the problem of religious conversions, and people changing the spelling deliberately to distance themselves from the old identity.

Based on the recorded migrations and patron saints listed, ZOROJE surname in Rakovica is a misspelled branch of the same family as the Zoroja from Vrebac.

To confirm this, I would have to do extensive research of the original vital records and civil documents .

Current phonebook is no good for including it in the database of surnames that existed before XX century.

If you come across any XIX and early XX century original document for the ZOROJE spelling I will be able to include it in that confirmed spelling and location for that earlier period.

Thank you for replying to my question. :)

att. ZOROJE spelling for Rakovica as valid surname in later date records (after 1918)

Both spellings are listed in the on-line Croatian phone book. Immigration records (the EI Manifest) list also both spellings ZOROJA and ZOROJE and the last ones listed are coming mostly from Rakovica. Transcription errors?
incitatus,

Where did you find the ZOROJE spelling for Rakovica?

I located only ZOROJA surname in 1905 church census of the families for that place, and would appreciate if you could direct me to the historical document or resource where this other spelling can be confirmed.

For this Zoroja family from PAVLOVAC (VREBAČKI) : their houses were located by the old village road towards ZAVOĐE.

As the original census from 1712 lists the plot number and location of the family owned land, this information can help you trace the family through the period for which the church vital records were destroyed.

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en/groups/researching-ethnic-serb...

You should also contact the Serbian Orthodox Church in the US - they have records and lists for people from Vrebac going back to 1904.

Military archives in Belgrade, Serbia will have information on the Zoroja men who volunteered to fight in WWI on the side of Serbia (1914-1918) - from Vrebac parish villages there were 107 volunteers.

The family connection to Vojvodina is with the families of these volunteers originating from Vrebac parish who settled in Vojvodina province - such ZOROJA family settlers moved to the village of VELEBIT near the town KANJIŽA after the WWI ended (1918), and also near towns of SOMBOR and IRIG.

In 1931. a number of emigrant families who came to USA and Canada from these villages donated through SOC the money for the Serbian Orthodox temple in Vrebac.

Serbian Orthodox Church, parish priest in charge of the rebuilding of the Vrebac temple committee and the Association of the Vrebac village people will have informati
on on this family and descendants who can help you.

att.
-Zoroja household, census 1712
-Vrebac WWII memorial - Zoroja: top fallen freedom fighters (partisans), bottom civilian victims.
-photo XIX century, Vrebac Serbian Orthodox temple, men in traditional (everyday) garments

Serbian Genealogy Society SGS "Rodoslovlje"
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en
