I am researching my late father-in-law's family and would appreciate advice as to how best to find some records about them.
My father-in-law Josef Merkl is described on his immigration file as having been born to Peter and Theresia Merkl on 15 August 1935, in Miletic, Blatchka, Yugoslavia. A bit of googling tells me that the town of Miletic is now in Vojvodina. The family were ethnic German.
I am also interested in getting information about the family's war time experience as we understand that at some stage during the war Joe and his grandparents were put in a camp where the grandparents died leaving Joe to fend for himself as his mother had been sent to a work camp in Odessa and his father was killed in the war having been conscripted into the German Army. We understand that mother and son were reunited by the Red Cross after the war.
Any advice or assistance you could give me would be appreciated.
