Pavel,

I will be putting this up on "Rodoslovlje" website in the research section as a resource for researching Rusyn ancestors from Bosnia but thought you may find it interesting and useful - a scientific paper on the subject of demographics of the Greek Catholic population of Bosnia from 1879. until recent times.

The paper is in Bosnian language, and has lots of useful information in terms of locations of settling, migrations and places of origin before coming to the Balkans. Also helpful in research is the fact that place-names of the towns and villages where they lived are in their current original spelling, so you do not have to resort to old maps in foreign languages when looking for where exactly your ancestors emigrated from - if they were of Rusyn or other Greek Catholic origin from Bosnia .

Let me know if you need help with translation/ where you can find similar scientific resources on this subject:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/119108303/07-Busuladzic-CSP-2003-1

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy

Pavel,

That is a screenshot with a working menu on the right side of a digital image of the original record that is available via Kalocsa diocese e-archive of the Roman Catholic Church :

http://archivum.asztrik.hu/

If you register with them, you can browse through digital images of all records for these places and periods :

http://archivum.asztrik.hu/?q=oldal/feldolgozottsag-attekint...

Here are registration details and service packages they offer in English :

http://archivum.asztrik.hu/?q=en/oldal/registration

Each package allows you to download a finite number of .jpeg images ( full page of the original record, with the archive watermark - standard for most e-archives I use ).

I take screenshots when I browse through records - it is easier than taking notes when working through many records simultaneously, and also I believe seeing these original period records may convince people to try and research their ancestors in detail on their own - which is part of our mission at "Rodoslovlje" - helping bring genealogy research of this region to a better quality standard and make it more accessible to people around the world.

My recommendation for this e-archive is based on:

- quality of source materials ( high resolution digital images of original records)

-affordability ( cheaper than any other source or *professional* service you can use to research these records)

-efficiency ( quality software than enables user to browse quickly through records)

-accuracy ( original period records written by parish priests )

-accessibility of support records and additional materials ( too much to go into detail, just a few : searchable index for all other records and materials located in the archive itself like school and parish administration records, for each parish the records of all canonical inspections from earliest period, extensive period church and other related literature)

-availability ( I believe this is the only electronic resource at the moment that offers records for the XX century )

-no religious controversies attached to the use of the resource, because the original author, Kalocsa diocese of the Roman Catholic Church, is the owner of all archived records and this e-archive too.

I also highly recommend this e-archive to anyone researching various branches of ethnic minority families ( German, Czech, Slovak,Rusyn, Bunjevci...) - because these families had a tendency to branch out across religions and communities :

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/forum/vojvodina/kalocsa-roman-cat...

I attached for you to this post one example of a full downloaded image from this archive for earliest available records from Kucura, year 1826, so that you can see how it looks like uncropped.

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com
The name the way you wrote it of your father is probably misread from an official document he had like a passport or an ID card - in Serbia, all official documents will have these things listed:

FIRST NAME
FIRST NAME OF THE FATHER
LAST NAME.

My advice to you is that you try contacting the embassy to contact the authorities in Serbia againa, and to look for

MILOŠ ( son of RADE ) VADIĆ
or
RADE (son of MILOŠ) VADIĆ

- I cannot confirm which first name belonged to whom from the way you have presented it here, nor the original spelling of the surname without original documents or records you have.

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com
Papers as in certificates of birth, marriage and death you can only obtain from the parish church in Temerin and Zmajevo (from church records), and municipal offices in these places (from civil records) - depending for which year civil records are available:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/documentation/municipal-offices-s...

Best way you can research possible family connections is the original records, and for Temerin and Zmajevo you can do that via Kalocsa diocese e-archive:

http://archivum.asztrik.hu/?q=en/oldal/registration

Relatives you can most easily find these days via facebook.

You could also try contacting the local newspaper in temerin in Hungarian language - if they run a story on your search for relatives people are more likely to come forward with information and contact you :

Temerini Újság :

http://temeriniujsag.info/fooldal

-att: original birth record of Elias ( Illes) Toth, Zmajevo (Ókér), year 1850.

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com

In the records for around 1885. of Roman Catholic Church for Kucura village there are parents with surname MAKAI.

This birth is not registered in them, if the information provided on this Makai is from the original birth certificate issued in the country of origin, I suggest to look for him in records of other denominations, or in the civil vital records in the municipal office in Kucura,Serbia. perhaps you could help with that line of research.

-att: surname MAKAI from birth and baptism records of the Kalocs diocese , Kucura, (then)Austria-Hungary, (now) Serbia, year 1884.

***
"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com

You are welcome. :)

To answer your questions:

Ludovicus is his first name in Latin language - its equivalent in Hungarian language is first name Lájos, and in German Ludwig. Which one was his original first name he used will depend on what language he spoke as mother tongue.

Names of the parents as i can read them are:

Franciscus Kern ( that would be Ferenc in Hungarian )

and

Francisca Klumszky.

More information on the parents you will find once you locate their marriage record - it will have their age, names of their parents, maiden surname of the mother, as well as the parish of origin (where they were born).

About registering for this archive - I know that a lot of people gave up on registering with them in the past simply because of the non-flexible method of payment they use. They are part of a church institution and a bit slow to catch onto the whole *online banking* thing. :)

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com

Thank you so much for your help! I tried briefly to register on the site (I believe they want a bank transfer or money order - no credit card payment online) - I will try and register within the month (and if I have ore trouble I will ask for assistance.) I had no idea Ludovicus was another name for Lajos/Louis. I cannot quite make out the names of his parents from the image you provided. The best I have come up with is Franciscus Kern and Francisca Klurnsery??? Do you have a better idea on those names?
Again, I am most appreciative of your help.

Even the smallest original detail like household number is important.

Usually I recommend people register for this e-archive since it is the cheapest and most efficient way to research ancestors from this area, but in your case I need to see first whether the earlier records that are important for your research are under some other location or parish that is available in this e-archive - since Budisava was a new settlement(from 1884.onwards).

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com

He has many family members who had came to the U.S. and that still live in Serbia. His brother's served in the military.. Milo and Boyan Mandich, Milo was killed and we never knew what happened to Boyan. My grandfather lived in Chicago when he first arived and made his way to Cincinnati. He married my Grandmother (Dessie Mandich)and lost contact with his family since they were too poor to travel. If you still have the pictures, we would LOVE to have them.

Krystal Mandich Adamson
511 Lang Rd.
Cincinnati Ohio 45244

There is the official listing of all victims of fascism during WWII in the form of Victims 1941-1945 Census.

If you provide the names of your ancestors I will look up the information from that census for you.

There is also the official list of victims of Novi Sad massacre which was actually a series of massacres of Jewish and Serbian civilians and others across Vojvodina region that culminated in the Novi Sad Raid.

Most recent contributions to research of this atrocity and identification of all victims have been made by Aleksandar Veljić.

His website in English about Novi Sad Raid 1942 :

http://www.genociderevealed.com/

facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/racija1942

-from his book in Serbian language, listings of all victims by place of residence ( for Novi Sad street by street), ethnicity and the separate listing of the families in which all members were killed :

http://www.makabijada.com/dopis/images/slike/RACIJA.pdf

You can order his book " Genocide Revealed:New Light on the Massacre of Serbs and Jews under Hungarian Occupation" in English via Amazon.

If you prefer to communicate on this subject in private please send me an email to

yugaya@gmail.com

-att. photo : dr Ignjat Pavlas ( first on the left ) and his family, 1923. On January 23rd, 1942 he and his wife could no longer stand waiting in line listening to the screams of men, women and children being shot, killed or just thrown alive into the freezing Danube. They approached the soldiers and asked to go to the front of the line. Holding hands, they jumped into death together followed by the rain of bullets. Only a few minutes later the executive order from Budapest, which was abhorred by the terror being carried out in its name and by its soldiers for days, arrived to the commanding officer and Novi Sad Raid was halted.

-Father of famous writer Danilo Kiš stood in that line on that same day and was released when the killings were ceased. World famous novels of Danilo Kiš (" Early Sorrows", "Garden, Ashes" and "Hourglass" are about his childhood and growing up in the shadow of Novi Sad Raid which destroyed his world - he was seven years old at the time their home was vandalized and father taken away, and most of his friends, neighbours and family perished in the raid and during the war. His father who survived that day was deported a few years later and killed in Auschwitz.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danilo_Ki%C5%A1

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/
Names of the parents in Serbian language:

Ljubo Lazarević
Katarina Đurić

His birth is registered in both civil birth records ( kept in municipal office) and in church vital records that are in posession of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Municipal offices in Serbia will issue you an official birth certificate based on his DOB but only if you prove you are a direct descendant and pay local taxes for that document .

As far as I know - communicating with them in English is pointless and you must find someone in Serbia who will pay the tax ( about 10 Euros ) to their local-only bank account.

List of contact details for municipal offices in Serbia:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/forum/general-forum/municipal-off...

For church records I suggest you contact Vanja Panić, Rodoslovlje researcher for Serbia.
The authorities in Austria (-Hungary), especially in the Vojvodina region had at one point by law banned the -ić surname suffix - i have to look up my notes, off the top of my head I think the year was 1814 when this law was enforced but it was practiced by the authorities even a century before that.

By that time the family names of the Serbs were already firmly established, so they got trunckated and many ended up with -OV, -EV, -IN suffix replacement ending surnames.

list of these Serbian surnames from Wikipedia:

http://sr.wikipedia.org/sr-el/%D0%A1%D0%BF%D0%B8%D1%81%D0%B0...

Some families in church records had their full surnames preserved, and some reverted them back to the original ones at a later point.

Any research of any such Serbian surname needs to be conducted keeping in mind all of these possibilities when looking at the records of the parish you need. Keep an eye on all Terzić, Terzijin, Terzija families from the area, chances are you are related.

-an article in English I wrote for Rodoslovlje on the process of assimilation of Slavic surnames in Austria-Hungaray:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/documentation/magyarization-serbi...

-a good research article in Serbian on this subject:

http://www.srpsko-nasledje.co.rs/sr-l/1998/11/article-14.htm...

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/

Grgich/Grgic

I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. My GG-Grandmother was Madeline (this was probably anglicised) Grgic (this was anglicised to Georgevich). She was born 14 March, Abt 1847. Her father was Nics. (as on her marriage certificate), ship builder and she had a sister Marie. They were all living in Izmir (formerly Smyrna, Turkey) in the 1860-1920s. I've recently had a DNA test which shows Serbian ancestry. Does anyone have any ideas or pointers for me?

I would love to learn anything you know about the Sturtz family. There was a Joseph Sturtz who married Alberta Cromer; you can see them in my family tree. Anthony and Constance were my great grandparents. Their daughter, Sophie, was my paternal grandmother, but I never knew her. Sophie married Peter Petrovich (and her sister, Martha, married Peter's brother, Joseph); their son, Leroy Petrovich, is my father. Do you have any information about Anthony and Constance's history, siblings, etc.?

I believe I'm a decendant of Anthony & Constance Sturtz. I think there was a son Joseph Sturtz who married Alberta Sturtz. Joseph Sturtz was killed in a mine accident when he was 36 I believe. I am trying to confirm this.
