Have you contacted the Serbian Orthodox Church in US? If the families were Serbian then you need to track down the parish records, information on exact place of origin of the family (often even the full address in the old country) was noted down in birth, marriage and death records I have seen from 1920s and 1930s. Do not rely on transcripts or official certificates, you need scans of pages with the original entry in the church vital records.
