I would suspect
Zsunacz is a variation on ZUNAC. I have also seen it spelled
SCHUNATZ. Or perhaps it is
German. Elisabetha's father married
Katharina Groszhans from the Elsass-Lothringen/Alsace-Lorraine (
Strassburg)area.
I have only seen BERKOVICH spelled BERKOVIC, never with out the E.
My grandmother Elisabetha
Zsunacz (Born Dec. 28, 1893) married ( 1915) Thomas Berkovich de Berkissewina (Born Dec. 22 1888). The title "de Berkissewina" was given by Maria Teresa, but don't know much on how that came about. Elisabetha had 4 children, Peter, Ilona (we knew her as
Emmi,)and
Anton. Another child, Alfons I think, died as a baby.
Some of Elisabetha siblings (Klara, Mary, John,
Nick) emmigrated and settled in the
Ventura and
Los Angeles Calif. areas. I'm not sure if Elisabetha came with them and went back to be married, or if she came later after her husband died. My father also told me he had cousins in the
Mansfield,
Ohio area.
I don't know where in the
Banat area they might have been from. At some point I guess around 1945 Elisabetha, my father, my aunt and her baby, fled to Germany where they lived for perhaps 5 years before coming to the USA. Again, this may have been the 2nd time for Elizabetha to go to the US, but the first for my father and aunt. My father joined the US
Army and was sent back to Germany where he met and married my mother. Peter Berkovich was the oldest and stayed in the Yugoslavia area. He married there and he and his wife Ann emmigrated to
Los Angeles around 1950. They went back to Yugoslavia and came again in the early - mid 1960's. I was a baby when they came in the 60's.
Also, Elisabetha's father was
Stefan Zsunac born Feb 9, 1855. His parents were
Josef Zsunacz (May 11, 1808) and Anna Banlik (Dec 8, 1823).
Well, that's almost all I know. I'm new at this ancestry research, so any tips would be appreciated. Thanks for responding! :)
