I am just now researching our family history.

My dad Merco Spanovich died in 1989. I also have a typed letter signed by Uncle Mike, talking about our family history beginning with my Grandfather: Sam and Grandmother: Sara. Dalene (Aunt Mary's daughter) gave me the letter a few years ago. The letter begins with First to be born was Helen, in Yugoslavia, who died during the Flu epidemic in Europe, at the age of 12.

I was told Uncle Mike & Aunt Betty had four children and moved to Arizona.

I'm trying to find the location of a town where an ancestor was born and raised and which he left to come to the US. His nationality is given a Croatian. The town, from 1891 to 1913 or a little later, was called Prapotnik, Yugoslavia. Spelling of the town varied. Any help would be appreciated.

Genealogy of the family of duke Petar Vukotić of Montenegro is well documented and researched. I suggest you contact one of the local family researchers to see if there is any documented direct link between your ancestors and this family. Surnames were often the same within a clan, and the link may not go further than common earlier origin.

According to publicly available info, one researcher, Nikola M. Vukotić, has a book that is soon to be published about the duke and his life.

Links to two newspaper articles about the duke Petar Vukotić, father of queen Milena, where the author researhers are mentioned:

http://www.dan.co.me/?nivo=3&rubrika=Feljton&clanak=...

http://www.pobjeda.me/arhiva/?datum=2005-03-02&id=55913

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

Hello. I have been researching my relatives from the Montenegro area, surname Srzentic. A person from Budva sent me a transcript with some important information which may contain my relatives. The trouble is, it's in Serbian. I've tried google translations, but it will not work as the document was scanned and then copied to me.

Does anyone know a translator from Serbian to english ? The document is 1 1/4 pages. I'll gladly pay a small fee for services.
Thanks,
Carl

My grandmother, Andje Raicevich, from Montenegro came to the US about this time. She had a cousin, who they called Andy, but his name was Andre Raicevich, who came about the same time. Andy married a woman named Ruth and they lived in Colorado Springs. They had two children, now in their 70's. Do you believe they may be related to you?

Hello Cousin !....As a young lad my grandmother read me letters from her couson in Buennos Aires in the 40's. She was from Lepetane, Boka Kotorska...She was a Vucinovic from there
and came to USA 1904 from Italy where she and her husband and son stayed one year leaving before that from Egypt where my father was born in 1903. My father was also Gracia Josef only son arr New York 1904...His father George Anthony Radovic, married to Elena Radovic nee Vucinovic from Lepetane, Mont. in
1902-3. They came to Seattle following Josef Vucinovic brother
of Elena.....The Radovic family and Vucinovic family lived next door to each other in Lepetane in 1903. These houses still stand there in Boka Kotorska today. Our cousins too..
George Radovich, Shelton, Wash. USA

Re: Here's a real challenge to Serbian origin of this surname..

I love challenges into Serbian origin of surnames. :D

BUT:

need more info on :

-first name of the ancestor and any known siblings/ immediate family members, year he immigrated, birth year

- what documents are basis for the Montenegro area of origin you mentioned

THEN:

I can point you based on facts and period records to what the original surname was, and if it is of Serbian/Montenegro origin how and where to look further. I do not make or post assumptions - plenty of that around with catastrophic results :

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en/forum/general-forum/expert-adv...

You are also the second person on these boards who mentions people from Montenegro and their supposed Czech ethnic origin ( more than highly unlikely) - I would like to know where you found historical / genealogical sources that can prove that.

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

Re: Finding MEDIGOVICH Family

You should start with identifying the original spelling of the surnames you are researching:

MEDIGOVIĆ / МЕДИГОВИЋ

RAĐENOVIĆ / РАЂЕНОВИЋ

MEDIGOVIĆ family from Petrovac, Montenegro, are identified in records of the Serbian Trade Association as coming from the smaller village ŽUKOVICA, PETROVAC:

http://baza.privrednik.net/privrednik.php?find=Medigovi%C4%8...

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en/documentation/serbian-trade-as...

The middle name for everyone you listed is the first name of the father.

Important thing to keep in mind is that the difference between what is available in English and what is available in local languages - your best bet for successful research is to locate a descendant of the same family or clan who can communicate in English and share their knowledge with you, both from the oral family history tradition and the written sources.

Serbian Genealogy Society SGS "Rodoslovlje"
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en
