Prapotnik, Yugoslavia

I'm trying to find the location of a town where an ancestor was born and raised and which he left to come to the US. His nationality is given a Croatian. The town, from 1891 to 1913 or a little later, was called Prapotnik, Yugoslavia. Spelling of the town varied. Any help would be appreciated.

'kapronca@gmail.com'

Zorica:

I only have census records from here in the US showing Nick Loncar on most of them.

His Declaration of Intention for naturalization (dated 9 April 1915 Goldfield, Esmeralda, Nevada) is where I obtained the following information:

Nicholas Peter or Perov or Parov Loncar
Born: 25 September 1876
Where: Trabene (Trebenje) Austria
On the Vessel Fulbrant or Fuebrandt/Treboant
From: Gravosa, Austria
Port of Arrival: New York
Date: 1 March 1901

Draft Registration shows:
Peter
Birthday May 1891
Brenia, Croatia, Austria

His oldest child Peter wrote a history for our daughter that says that he was born in Trebenje, Herzegovina, Yugoslavia. Peter Sr. states that his father Nicholas Perov or Peter Loncar was born on 25 December 1976. He came to America on 1st day of March 1901. (Same as Declaration of Intention states). He worked his way across the United State of America doing all sorts of jobs (lay brick, labored at anything he could find). Pete says that his Dad headed for San Francisco, California. Supposedly left San Francisco the day of the great earthquake 18 April 1906. Walked and worked at various mines from California to Lida, Esmeralda, Nevada. Pete mentions when he visited Yugoslavia in 1978 he found that Nicholas Perov Loncar had 1 sister Angie died in Yugoslavia around about 1975 or 1977 had a daughter named Anne-no last name)) and 1 brother Steve. Steve Loncar had a son Nikola? A cousin possibly of Nicholas Perov Loncar (Michael Loncar) came to America and supposedly settled in Gary, Indiana, USA. Don’t have any more information on that one.

Pete’s notes from his visit in Yugoslavia in 1978 states that Anne, daughter of Angie still lived in Yugloslavia where Nicholas Perov Loncar was born. He also states that Anne’s two brother were killed by ‘Ustasha’/Croations Partisons.

Other than the above information I do not know of anything else.

Thank You so much for your willingness to help.

I am going to send this information to a Bosnia/Herzegovina website to see if they can help? Would that be more in the right place?

Thank You so much,

Carolina
bcloncar@yahoo.com
Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts has in the 1970s done extensive onomastic field research in former Yugoslavia.

One of the academic studies published as a results of gathering more than 650.000 onomastic entries is this paper by prof. dr. Svetozar Stijović on the village of GORAŽDEVAC, near PEĆ - he himself took part as a young scholar in the field research in Kosovo.

Goraždevac village is first mentioned in the charter of the Serbian king Stefan I Nemanjić in 1220.

"O antroponimima Goraždevca kod Peći" ( On the antroponyms of Goraždevac near Peć)

http://scindeks-clanci.ceon.rs/data/pdf/0352-5724/1999/0352-...

( click on the * pun text* in the menu box on the left to download the full article). It is available only in Serbian language.

Information on:

-surnames
-earlier surnames (due to Ottoman way of recording first name of the father as surname )
-detailed family histories of all families,
- their earlier place of origin,
- their patron saint (slava),
-family and individual nicknames,
-language and dialect,
- names of people born in late XIX and early XX century,
-history of the village,
- available church vital records,
-other published articles, studies and books that are relevant for researching ancestors from Goraždevac.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gora%C5%BEdevac

http://www.panacomp.net/serbia?mesto=kosovo_gorazdevac

http://www.eparhija-prizren.com/en/news/bishop-atanasije-ser...

Community of about 750 Serbs still lives in Goraždevac enclave.

att: temple of St. Jeremiah, XVI century, Goraždevac - one of the oldest still standing wooden temples of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

area:

http://sredacka-zupa.tripod.com/map.htm

Sredačka župa is also sometimes incorrectly referred to as *Prizrenska župa*

villages:

Sredska , Pousko, Jablanica, Lokvica, Rečane, Živinjane, Planjane, Nebregošte, Manastirica, Struže, Donje Ljubinje, Gornje Ljubinje, Drajčići, Mušnikovo, Gornje Selo

The area has many Serbian Orthodox Church temples & as of recently remains of them from the time of the Nemanjić dynasty:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemanji%C4%87_dynasty

If you can read in Serbian language, here is an interesting article describing the emigration patterns of people from Kosovo (Sredačka župa - Prizren) in early XX century:

http://www.srpskadijaspora.info/vest.asp?id=12470

- this excerpt depicts one group's voyage from 1911. :

"They traveled on foot from their villages around Prizren to Uroševac, and from there took the train to Skopje, where travel documents were issued ( by the Ottomans). From there they went by train across the border into Serbia, to Belgrade, where they purchased the tickets for the voyage across the ocean via a specialized agency, and continued by train to Budapest, Vienna and Paris, and finally to the port of Le Havre, and from there to New York.

These were well established routes - they would travel to America in large groups, lead by one of community leaders, usually a witty man of action who could help overcome the many obstacles that they would encounter while crossing so many borders. One such problem arose when they made it to the actual ticket purchasing in Le Havre and a boy who was not yet 16 was not allowed to travel. The group leader testified and declared the boy was his own son and stayed behind with him while they obtained a false document from their agency in Belgrade with changed surname and information - from the story of emigrant Jovan Popović-Kalinčić"

If your ancestors were from the Prizren area, there are several books with lists of all emigrants and detailed family histories published in Serbian language that are available.

att:

-Serbian attire Prizren

- Sredačka župa

-Serbian Orthodox Church temple in Sredska from the Nemanjić era ( XIV century)

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en
https://www.facebook.com/rodoslovlje
My mother's maiden name is Manduka. Her ancestor, Vladislaw Manduka emigrated to the U.S. in the 1850's from the U.K. He had been in the British Foreign Cavalry and probably saw action in the Crimea. After entering the US he joined the NY regiment of the US cavalry and fought in our Civil War. He is buried in Baltimore, MD. Any info on his family's origin would be appreciated. He was apparently born in Poland or Russia.

Re: ZELEZNIK LESKE from Slovenia

You are searching in all the wrong places! You need to post your messsage to the Slovenia board

Look at the 1930 census... he and Mary were Slovenian. Also you said he was running from a war.... there was no war in 1911... and besides if his year of arrival on the 1930 census is correct.... then he would have been around 17 years old... draft was 21 in the old Austro-Hungarian Empire. You mentioned that you thought he changed his name to avoid that war.... but in fact he would have had to recieve permission to leave Austria-Hungary and would have had to have supporting documents. If he in fact came to the US under another name he more likely used someone elses passport.

Also Louis is not a name you would find in Slovenia.... BUT Alojsia is a name found there and many men with this name changed their name to Louis in America.

Here the closest match found in immigration records
Name: Aloys Zeleznik
Arrival Date: 14 Jan 1911
Estimated birth year: abt 1891
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Havre
Ship Name: La Provence
NATIVITY: Austria
Line: 5
Microfilm Serial: T715
Microfilm Roll: T715_1619
Birth Location: Austria
Birth Location Other: dolj. radula
Destination to brother in law Martin JORDAN at Greensburg PA

Although he was going to Pennsylvania there is a notation that was made in 1939 when he applied for US Citizenship at Salt Lake City, UT!

Now for Mary's arrival if you were paying attention you will notice she lists Alois not Louis as her bridegroom. Also notice that she lists her next of kin in Slovenia as an Uncle... which would indicate her parents had passed away.

Her birthplace is listed as Radolje... and Alojs manifest lists his as Dolj. Radola.... which i believe to be the same place.... however from what I see this place does not exist anymore but is located in the Municipality of SEVNICA

You need to post to the Slovenia board, where there are some people who know the villages in that country.

Oh and Yugoslavia did not exist until after the end of WW I, 1918. So while they came from the same place the entity that ruled Slovenia changed.

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

Hi Daniel,

It's been a while since we have written. Is that how the name is spelled in Albanian? Shyti? In Greek it is Sioutis. It is quite possible that we are related because I know that my Sioutis/Shyti ancestors came from somewhere in Albania. I have an entire family tree of names going back to my great (x4) grandfather. Do you have any other names?

I know that Permet had a large Greek (Northern Epirus) population.

If you would like to email me directly, here is my address:

GrkAthena82@aol.com

I'd like to hear from you.

Athena

Hello Athena!!

It's been a long time since I've wrote you. :-)
I am back with another querry, I am trying to locate my grandfather, Mina Shyti, who came from Albania in Romania in the 40's (I think). In Albania he and my grandmother, Maria Shyti, were from a place called Permet. Maybe we are relatives, because I know from my mother that we have some distant relatives in Greece. Well, my question is, do you have any idea how to find his trace?? I am trying to establish my family tree, but I am kind of stuck. :-)

Thank you very much for your help and reply, and I wish you all the best.

Daniel

Hi Athena,

I am glad that you've answered. So, Shuti is a name common in Albania, but it's macedo-romanian name. My ancestors came from Albania too, but they established in Romania, as your ancestors came in Greece. I am not familliar with Kosovo, but as there are alot of Albanians, maybe the name is common there too.

Regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you so much for your response. So Shuti is a Romanian name that is found in Albania? Or is it found in both countries?

I have heard that my ancestors came from Albania. I, however, am from Greece. My family is from Epirus, the northwestern part that borders Albania. In Greek we spell it Sioutis because there is no "sh" sound in Greek.

Is it a common name in Kosovo? I really look forward to hearing back from you.

Athena

Robert,

The best way to begin to find out the parents names is to order Thomas Social Security Application, which should have his birthplace and his parents names. You can order the SS App from the the government for $27.

Robert Jerin

Yes Thomas is my grate grandfather his is buried in my home town of Orland, in Glenn County, but we are having a hard time finding out who his parents are or anything about them. I do know the name was spelled Pihajlic though. His mothers name Was Grace as far as we know. But have no idea who his father is or what his name is. I did see a Terasa an Georgy Pihajlic that came over from Ellis Isand but i dont think that is them. From what i understand the Pihajlic's were alway not getting along so I dont think they stayed in touch and all went there own way. I did find some Pihajlic and Pihaylic in Michiagan but am having a hard time conecting them to me, because no one has much information on the Pihajlic side of the family. If i could find out who Thomas parents are i think that might put me in a new direction.
Thanks for the input.
Robert Barker

Robert,

Have you looked in US Census records, to determine when they arrived in the US? If not you may wish to do this.

Also to determine where they were from the Social Security App should show the birthplace of the applicant and his parents names. Here is one that may be your Thomas (Tomo)

THOMAS PIHAYLICH 21 Dec 1891 Nov 1968 DIED 95963 (Orland, Glenn, CA) Soc Sec No. 364-14-8413 Issued at Michigan

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

Hi Robert

The name spelt in Serbian is Pihajlic, there are no "Y" in the Serbian alphabet but the "J" is pronounced as a why, and the "C" at the end carries an accent above it indicating that the letter is pronounced "Ch". Most serbian Surnames are Paternal (Father) or Maternal (Mother) or Occupational or surnames can be derived from personal traits. I ran Pih (ajlic) through a trans later and the word Pih came back with the following, faugh - used to express contempt, disgust or abhorrence or example - pish, bah. The name might also be a dirivative of a turkish word, the balkans was under turkish controll for about 500 years until 1889.

But this does not mean that the name is correct, the name was Americanized but might also have been changed. You might want to see if you can find any old documents that might indicate this such as naturalization papers. Also you need to confirm weather you great grand father was Serbian or Croation so you can know where to search, his nationality will indicate his religion Serb (Eastern Orthodox) Croatian (Catholic).

I have searched the Serbian White pages and came up with one hit for the name Pihajlic in the Capital Belgrade.

I hope this helps

Looking for relatives related to Katarina. She is my great aunt.

Seen that obituary for KATARINA PIŠTELJIĆ JOCIĆ you posted on Serbian forum. It’s stated there that Katarina was buried on old Serbian orthodox cemetery in KOŠEVO. As far as I know that cemetery is in SARAJEVO (Bosnia Herzegovina) not in Croatia.

On that same obit are listed her son Todor and daughter in law Anđelina, and grandchildren Mladen, Ljeposava, Drago and Duško.
