The surname is distinctly Ukrainian. Variant spellings of same surname: Коломиець (Russian version) or Коломієць (Ukrainian version). Today there are 25,000+ people w/this surname living in Ukraine.

Have you checked for this surname in Владивосток (Vladyvostok) & Приморский край (Prymorskij kray)?

When did he immigrate to Australia? Any idea how long he lived in Harbin?

The church records from 1833-1885 for the Prischib area are available at https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list. Scroll down to and click on Russia, Lutheran Church Book Duplicates 1833-1885, then click on Browse through images. Then click on Tavrida, then Melitipol. There were 2 main churches in the area early on: one in Hochstadt and one in Molotschna. You may need to go through both sets to find members of the Schoenmeier family. The name does sound familiar to me from my search through the church books for my family. Good luck!

kolomeitz history

Hi I have been reading all the posts on the site as my brother-in-law Shaun (who has posted to it previously) and I were recently talking about some of the info contained. Some of these posts are connected and others could be!! The grandfather of Shaun, my husband (Robert)and their 3 other siblings is the Alexander being spoken of who immigrated to Australia from Vladisvostok via Harbin. He recently turned 99, being born in 1910. It seems he could possibly be the brother of the fellow who ended up in Canada, or he could possibly be the orphaned Ukranian brother of someone else's relative ...but we have no proof of these possibilities unfortunately. (Most people who hear the name do say it is Ukranian.) Grandfather does not speak of his past and it took some urging to get him to tell of his 'motherland' around Nicolsk just north of Vladisvostok. The lady who states her daughter-in-law Denise's father was an Alexander in New Guinea is slightly mistaken. This Denise is our cousin and Alexander is also her grandfather. He had 3 sons - Vladimir (Wally)who is Denise's father, Alec (my husband's father) and Nikita. Nikita is named after the grandfather's father in Russia. Wally did live in New Guinea at one time.
I hope this sheds light on a couple of things. Good luck all in the search!
Diane

Hi, My grandmothers name is Natalya Celovna Kolomeitz and was born in 1882 in Natalino, Ukraine, and died there also in 1968. Her father, my great grandfather was Celov (short for alexander) Kolomeitz, whom as I have been told had other brothers and uncles whose names where Alexander also... this would be bery exciting if there was a connection.
Hi, I don't think its a coincidence. My grandmother's name is Natalya Celovna Kolomeitz and was born in 1882 and died in 1968 in Natalino, Ukraine. Her Father ( my great grandfather) was Celov (pronounced Selov) Kolemeitz, and as I have to understand, Celov is short for Alexander. You may want to talk to your grandfather and maybe if he can remember, he might be able to connect some of the names.... that would be so incredible if he did.... anyway, thanks for the reply and looking forward to hopefully brighten some my dark ancestry lines. Victor Dziabczenko. By the way, I live in southern California, and my email is vdziabczenko@yahoo.com

How very coincidental. My Grandfather (also Alexander) is 99 (born 1910) (and still alive). I happen to have a cousin named Denise Kolomeitz. I am sure that my Grandfather used to cut cane in North Queensland, but not PNG. There is probably no connection, but the name co-incidence alone is uncanny. My Grandfather emigrated from Vladivostok in 1939. I hope you find some connections as it is almost impossible to find or trace records in the eastern block countries. Especially considering the government "stole" much of the families traditional right to land ownership in the name of the state and communism. If records existed one would think a barrage of legal action could be persued from the decendants.
I accidently stumbled on this site and am so excited. My daughter-in-law is Denise Kolomeitz, although she writes it Koloheitz. Denise was quite upset when she couldnot find any relatives, but we may have broken the barrier. I know from the European cursive writing that one often extended the first stroke of the m, so I am convinced she is a Kolomeitz. Her father's name was Alexanderb. abt. 1909, and she was born in Papua New Guinea. He died a couple of years ago in Queensland Australia. Her mother's name was Mimieux. I will tell her about this lucky find.
Corinne Parkinson

Hi Natalie.

We are probably related.
I was wrong when I said Gavril (Gabriel) was my great-grandfather. He must have been my great uncle. I have a picture of my grandfather's gravestone in the cemetery in Cochrane, and the name is Anton. So we may have the same grandfather.

I was just so excited to find so much information about Gabriel, that I suppose I latched on to it, and wrote that post. I thought Anton was Gabriel's son, but he can't be because when I checked the year of Anton's birth in the picture, it is too close to Gabriel's. They must have been brothers. I can't find any records of Anton coming to Canada, or what he did before he came to Canada. I know that Alexander Kolomeitz left from the same area of Russia that Gabriel was stationed in the war. Alexander went to Australia. Whether the two were related, I can't say, but the two of them were in the same part of Russia around the same time, and both left to go elsewhere. And I don't know where Anton was at this time.

But I don't want to cause any trouble for anyone. So if it will cause trouble, then just ignore my posts. I realize there were some secrets, and that things were much different back when my mother left town and moved to Toronto to have me.

Still, I would like to know more about my family history. I would like to know about the french-canadian part. What was my grandmother's maiden name? Then I can try to trace that name back in history. My children and grandchildren would like to know more about their heritage. I'm not interested in invading the current family, just going back in the history.
I'm guessing that the French-Canadian must go back as much as 200 years or so in Canada, because I don't think there were as many French immigrants after 1759. Also, if that is the case, it wouldn't surprise me to find that there is some first nations heritage mixed in there somewhere in the last 200 years. There may not be, but the possibility exists.

I can't race my father's heritage at all, because I think only my mother knows who he was. All I know is that he had a Finnish mother and English father, and came from a larger town to the south, where the family was in the lumber or timber business.(Timmins?)
So all I have is this very small link to my heritage.

I've had a good life, and my mother did what she thought was the right thing in the circumstances. I was raised by a good family, and grew up with great friends, so I don't have any bitterness at all toward her. I hear that her life improved afterwards too, so it was the right thing for both of us. I don't want to jeopardize any of that. I just want to trace backwards as far as I can.

I mean, I wouldn't mind corresponding with SOMEBODY in the family, but that's not my main focus. I would like to hear stories about my mother, and her family, who wouldn't? But that is not my main purpose here. My purpose is to give my kids a sense of heritage, and ethnic background, to learn about.
I mean even a recipe for grandmother's perogies or something.

Hi Natalie, sorry for the confusion, I thought I heard my mother mention that I had several uncles on the Kolomeitz side, If your grandfater was born before 1860, he could very well be brother to my grandfater Celov Kolomeitz. Its only a guess, of course, but the possibility exists. My grandmother was born in Natalyne, Ukraine, but her father could have come from anywhere in Ukraine. We could compare notes.

HI, sorry I didn't answer for a long time, thought the message got forgotten. The town you are asking about is Natalyne, which is southeast of Krasnograd and south of Kharkiv. the dates of birth or death of Celov Kolomeitz is unknown to me, but I do know that my grandmother's birth is in 1882 and that puts my great grandfathers birth at least (my guess) at somewhere starting in 1860 and before. I do know he had a lot of brothers, of which I do not know their names.

I am Natalie Kolomeitz. I'm not sure if I am the Natalie Kolomeitz from Northern Ontario one has referred to in one of the other posts. My grandfather was Anton Kolomeitz, not necessarily the one you refer to however. I would be interested in swapping some information as I know very little about my heritage.

Update:
After consulting my resources, it appears I was mistaken about Gavril's identity. He cannot possibly be my great grandfather, because he was born only 5 years different from my grandfather,. Therefore Gavril is my Great-uncle most likely. He is buried in the same cemetery as my grandfather. Gavril (Gabriel)Kolomeitz was born in 1885, and Anton (Tony)Kolomeitz was born in 1890. They must be either brothers or cousins, although I suppose it is possible that they are uncle and nephew too.(Most likely brothers)
Gavril's other information is correct, as far as where he lived and what he did. Of Anton, I have next to no information, other than the fact that his widow was still alive 13 years ago, remarried, and living far away from there. She will not likely be occupying the empty spot next to him, even though her name is on the stone, without dates.(Unfortunately, not her maiden name).

I still can't identify a town known as Natalino. It is more than likely Natalyn, or Natalijn, Natalyno, or some other derivative. Of course the cyrillic spelling will feature different letters. Relative to the name Natalya, which is common enough. Do you have a province with which to narrow down the search? The Ukraine is a vast area, with tiny hamlets and villages, with the additional problem of language changes over the years as well.
Well I still think there must be a connection somewhere, my grandmother, Natalya Kolomeitz, was born in 1882 in Natalino, Ukraine, and passed away in the same city in 1968. From the word of mouth account from my mother, her father, of which I have no other data, was named Celov Kolomeitz. By the way, my grandfather's name was Pavlo Skotarenko, I have no clue as to their wedding date. There can't be that many Kolomeitz family names, can there? Thanks for the replies.

I am not sure, but I wonder about the timing.
My Grandfathers name is Alexander and Grandmothers is Vera.
Alexander is still alive (pushing 93 now), so would have been born around 1911, however Vera passed away in 1998. I can't recall when Vera was born however.
My brother and his wife visited Kiev last year and the receptionist at the hotel had the same last name "Kolomeitz". I've seen it spelt slightly differently in English due to phonetical interpretation, but its very similar.
There are many interesting stories of how people got out, and what they did along the way to survive.
It would be nice to put the tree's together, but from what I hear the records of births, deaths, marriages let alone state treatment of dissenters were destroyed (conveniently).
Mostly all we have now is a piecemeal verbal history, eroded and embellished by time and events. To some of us its a cultural rishness we'll never really know.

Regards,
Shaun

This is probably a stab in the dark however to be considered.
My mother was born in Nikolaev, the Ukraine in 1919 and brought up in an orphanage. She died in 2001 (81yrs) of Multiple Myeloma, claiming her maiden name was Kolomeitz. Whether true or make-believe, do not know. She had vague recollections of an orphanage style upbringing and claimed possibly to have a brother named Nikolai.
My oldest sister, visited the Ukraine in 1997, attempting to find records and trace her past. She was informed the records had been destroyed by fire during World War 11.

My mother believed she was orpaned out around two years of age. She also recalls the house nurse mentioning a brother to her. Her memories were either distorted, painful or simply fictitious.!
To this day, we have had no success. My mother's name was Vera. She fled to Austria in 1939, finally meeting my father and marrying in 1945.
Was she illegitimate ?

Cannot provide any additional information, but would be happy to answer and questions.
Nadia

I am a member of the Kolomeitz clan in Australia.
My Grandfather (Alexander) and Grandmother (Vera) emmigrated from Manchuria when my father (also Alexander) was 2, in 1939 (at least that is what I recall). I suspect because the dates are much later then there is every chance that my Grandfather is not the Alexander you refer to, although it would be intruiging if he was and help somewhat to put the family history together.

The Zaverucha surname does have a Cossack flavor, but according to Ellis Island people
w/this surname mostly came from the Tarascha district of Kiev Region.
I found a town named Sabadasz not too far south of Tarascha.
I think this might be the town I am looking for.

I think that Kolomeitz may have come through Vancouver from Vladivostok. Filip Konowal came that way. They were both stationed in the Russian Far East before emmigrating. Both ended up in Ontario too.
He may have come to Canada immediately after his release from the Russian Army, and using his Army pay, and connections to get passage. He may even have arranged "working passage".
This could have been any time between 1909 and 1914.
His wife and 3 children were still in "Sabordash" in 1916, according to his attestation papers.

Does anybody know of records of ships entering through Vancouver?
I'll have to consult Li-Ra-Ma.
Every day, the clues keep coming.

Thank you
Thank you.
I will have to look at those items in the archives.
The map is valuable too. Any of the old maps are good to have for this purpose.
The articles on the Russo-Japanese War I have read. They are excellent.

I was wondering if perhaps the town is Berdichev?
bor-dash = ber-dich
What kind of transcription and clerical errors were made back then?
Although Berdichev was about 75% Jewish, and my great-grandfather had Russian Church listed on his Attestation Papers.

If I can get the town right, then I've got something to go on at least.

The other question I have is what documentation did the government require to enlist?
If he would had to have shown some sort of documentation, then what would have been satisfactory? I have read that it was not uncommon for Ukrainian men to state their origin as Russian to enlist in the army and avoid the Internment camps.
How could they do this if proper documentation was required to enlist?
Map of Kievskaya Guberniya/Region > Southern Russia at turn of the century will help eliminate/confirm possibilities ??? Looks to me like the variant names of Zaporizzha would have been outside of Kiev Region, in regions like Kherson/Beresan etc.

Notes on Guberniya District Maps
http://www.angelfire.com/or/yizkor/gubmaps.html

You might want to take a look at the LI-RA-MA Collection in Canadian Archives.
Series consists of Russian subject immigrants who came to Canada in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Case files bear information on Russian subjects in Canada who requested documents or services of the Consulate. In many cases they include authorized papers used in lieu of passports as well as family correspondence. This part of the LI-RA-MA collection contains valuable biographical and genealogical data.

Welcome to the LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES CANADA website / Bienvenue au site Web BIBLIOTHÈQUE ET ARCHIVES CANADA
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/

Did Grandfather come directly to Canada or did he come via the USA???

What was Grandfather's original given name? Was it Gavril/Havryl or Kiril perhaps???
Gabriel is anglicized version.

The Zaverucha surname does have a Cossack flavor, but according to Ellis Island people
w/this surname mostly came from the Tarascha district of Kiev Region. Zaverucha should also show up in LI-RA-MA Collection.
_____________________________________________________

You may want to read "The Russian Cavalry during the Russo-Japanese War".

My great grandfather Gabriel Kolomeitz b. 1885 joined the Canadian Army in 1916. He listed his hometown as Sabordash, Kiev Province, Russia.

He also said that he had previously been in the 15th East Siberian Rifles for 3 years. (This regiment fought in the Russo-Japanese war in 1904-05, near Port Arthur and Vladivostok.

His wife Alexandria and 3 children were still living in "Sabordash" when he enlisted, although they subsequently came to Canada.

Is Sabordash the same as Zaporizhska? or is there some other town that I'm not familiar with?
Does anybody know any history of the 15th East Siberian Rifles, or where I could get enlistment information?
His neighbours across the road in Canada were named Zaverucha, and I always thought that they might also be from Zaporizhska.

Albert
I don't know where in Bavaria my Ullmers are from. Just grabbing straws right now. My gggrandfather was born on December 28, 1822 in Bavaria. He immegrated to U.S. from LeHarve, France in 1854, arriving New York in November 11, 1854. He traveled with his fiance Margaret Knauer. They were on the ship Shelter. This is all I know about the begining of his life. His naturalization papers state he denounced the "King of Bavaria", and all other foreign rulers.

Hi Jon:

The Mennonite Molotschna Colonies were on the east side of the River Molotschna and across from them on the west side of the river was the Prischib Colonies which were mostly Lutheran and a few Catholic communities.

And just to the South of Melitopol was the Eugenfeld Colonies these were daughter colonies of the Prischib Colonies.

It is even possible that who you are looking for their records are in the Lutheran Parish's in the area. I am researching all 3 Lutheran Parish's there.

I have worked on 12 German Russian villages 11 of which are in the above Colonies I have all the church records from 1833-1885 except on 3 that I am working on right now. These 3 I am done from 1833-1855.

I have maps of all the German Russian villages in the above area which was the Taurien Area. I'll check to see where your villages were located.

Now you see why I asked what your surnames were??? I may have something or at least maybe I seen some of your stuff.

Yes I agree the spelling are different from one Nationality to another.

I will check my map to find your villages.

Brian

Hi Brian,

The spelling of the place names I referenced is correct for the period. The difference in spellings you've encounted is due to the difference in German and Russian spellings for the same places. For example, the Russian river Molochnaya was known by German (Mennonite) colonists as Molotchna.

The places I referenced were originally founded by the Doukhobor religious movement. However, they were situated across the Molochnaya/Molotchna river from the Mennonite settlements. For this reason, I'm not surprised that they may appear in maps of Mennonite villages for the area.

After 1841-1845, the Doukhobors of these villages were exiled to the Caucasus mountain region. The villages themselves were resettled by Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox peasants. There was afterwards some Mennonite presence in some of the more northern villages from that time onwards as well.

Best Regards,

Jon Kalmakoff

Hi Jon:

I have a book in German on all the German Russian villages that were in Russia. I checked my book your spelling for many of the places you are looking for is off some.

The river you mentioned is the River Molotschna.

I have to ask is it possible who you are looking for in these villages could some have been Mennonite at one time??? I ask this as some of the villages you are looking for were Mennonite??? I am wondering if some could have been Lutheran at one time also??? If you email me directly I can give you info on the villages.

brian.schatz@sasktel.net

What surnames are you researching???

Brian
