Hello,
I recently learned that my great-grandparents were from the area around Uzhhorod, Ukraine and were Carpatho-Rusyn. Their names on the Ellis Island passenger list are Fedor and Ancia Begor, but then once they got to America they apparently changed their names to Frank and Anna Bega at some point. Their marriage license application in the U.S. lists their parents as Alex and Julia Bega and John and Mary Pazak (obviously the first names were anglicized). It also says Ancia/Anna was married before but does not say to whom, only that her first husband died in July 1910. Their Ellis Island record also mentions that they were heading to see a Michael Pasiak in Smithdale, PA, possibly a brother-in-law (it was somewhat hard to read). They immigrated in December 1912.
Anna/Ancia's naturalization record lists her birthplace as "Suchiz, Austria." My best guess is that this means either the present day villages of Sukhyi (Tikhyi) or Stuzhitsa in Ukraine. Frank/Fedor's naturalization record lists his birthplace as "Unguar, Czechoslovakia" (Uzhhorod), but the Ellis Island passenger record clearly lists a different city of residence, "Tenvessvild, Hungary." The closest possible match I have been able to find is Fenyvesvolgy (modern Stavne, Ukraine). My guess is they listed Unguar/Uzhhorod since it was the closest large city. If anyone has some insight about these villages that would also be appreciated!
