??? A quick look indicates that immigrating Krentz clan might have had Prussian roots. Following is a long article, but it will help w/historical perspective.
http://library.ndsu.edu/grhc/research/scholarly/meetings_con...

You are looking for German Records from Zhytomir, which at the turn of the 19th century was the regional capital of the Vohlynskaya gubernia > Czarist Russia.

Best resource for your purposes would be Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe. There are very few genealogists that are more knowledgeable re German Vohlynian heritage, than Jerry Frank, the site's Creator and List Administrator. A membership will provide you entré to parish records and information, not readily available otherwise.
https://www.sggee.org/research/parishes/parish_histories/Vol...
Hi Ric,

I received an e-mail from Hannia - Mighthelp who said you may need my assistance with your research in Volyn.

I live in Volodymyr-Volynskyi, it's about 25km from Turopin and about 40km from Turzysk. As far as I know, the old RC Church in Turzysk was destroyed, I am not sure there was a new one built. I can go to check, as well as check whether there is any cemetery preserved. I think it is also worth visiting the museum in Turiysk and talking to the local historians.

Here is the list of metric records from Turzysk Roman Catholic Cathedral available in Lutsk Archives (including the information on the citizens of the villages of Bobly, Verbychne, Dolsk, Zadyby, Tulychiv, Rastiv, Radovychi, Obenizhy, Lityn, Klusk, Zadyby, Mokrets, Blazhenyk and TUROPYN):

Birth: 1799-1822, 1828, 1848, 1849, 1852, 1862, 1863
Marriage: 1828, 1848, 1849, 1852, 1862, 1863
Death: 1828, 1848, 1849, 1852, 1862
Confession Lists: 1852, 1853, 1855, 1856-1858, 1860-1866, 1868-1877, 1880-1883, 1885, 1890-1892, 1894, 1896, 1898, 1900, 1903, 1907, 1910
I must admit it is quite much in comparison with what is left on other churches of RC denomination. I can research them for you.

You will find more records in The State Archives in Poland:

Archiwum Główne Akt Dawnych
00-263 Warszawa, ul. Długa 7
tel: (22) 831-54-91 do 93, 635-45-32
fax: 831-16-08
email: sekretariat@agad.gov.pl
www.agad.archiwa.gov.pl

They keep birth/marriage/death records since 1827-1847, 1850-1899

But for the research I can help you with your trip to Volyn as well. You will find out more at my webpage: west-ukraine-tours.com

Please, feel free to contact me.

Regards,
Andriy Dorosh

Most bank card and credit cards are accepted at hotels. We picked up cash at the airport on arrival using a bank card. If you are in a town and going to a local store to buy a souvenir or something like that, you may need to pay cash. We purchased gas with a credit card. We only ate at two different hotel restaurants while there so I do not know the situation for paying at an independent one.

Food was generally good and reasonably priced but don't order beef. Of course I don't do that anywhere in Europe. Generally poor quality and high priced compared to the States or Canada. Hotels in the centre of cities and towns can be very expensive but we stayed at a highway hotel on the outskirts of Rivne for only $40 a night (a little on the old side but very clean and acceptable).

Since you have already traveled in Europe, you probably already know that you need to limit your password to 4 digits.

Jerry

I am Canadian and only needed a passport. Probably the same for the US. If you are going to drive, get an International Driving license. In Canada it is available through the equivalent of your AAA so that is probably where you should try. You do not have to be a member.

You may want to consider a driver / translator though I am not in a position to recommend anyone in your area. We hired a translator at our final destination which I had arranged in advance through a charitable care organization in Rivne (Rowno). She did not need to know how to get to my villages as I had that all planned out in advance. She was quite helpful at the village level, allowing us to communicate with the local residents.

We had to travel on some really bad rural roads. In one case it took us over an hour to travel 12 km. on cobblestone road full of holes and sharp rocks, driving through ditches and fields to get around some really bad areas. Our translator admitted, after our return that she was praying the entire way. In your case your villages are conveniently located close to a secondary highway so you shouldn't have much of a problem with access.

Language otherwise is not too much of a problem. Most hotels of any size will have staff who speak English. Restaurants not quite as good but many, especially at the hotels, will have an English menu. Gas is readily available along all the highways at mostly new, clean kiosks just like in North America but don't expect staff to speak English. You can readily discern what gas you need but be careful that you don't pick diesel by mistake or vice versa depending what your car takes.

Ukraine has a very corrupt government that carries over from its communistic roots. That is why it is a very poor country, compared for example to Poland which is recovering very well. I was more scared of encountering police because of speeding or something like that than I was of being kidnapped. We did not see a high police presence anywhere except on an almost 100 km stretch of highway that was being 4-laned out of Kiev and limited to construction speeds (I think 70 km/hr). Here they had radar traps almost every 10 km or so.

Otherwise we felt quite safe in daylight hours. I probably wouldn't go out for a walk after dark but there are many places in the States where I wouldn't do that.

Jerry

Jerry,

Thank you once again for your information. The travel information is especially useful, as I knew Ukraine was not part of EU but I did not know the car rental situation you described. Do you know if a person like me who is a citizen of the US would need a passport and a Visa ( I know there was some talk of easing Visa requirements, but I dont know if anything was ever formalized)?

The information I stated earlier about lands leased by the Czar came from the same distant relative who talked about how cemeteries might have been bulldozed. I don't have any facts to back up what she said, just her written account. I appreciate you shedding light and sharing your understanding.

I'm curious...did you feel "safe" when traveling in Wolyn? I've heard other "stories" about possible kidnappings etc. I am not sure how much the stories are exaggerated.

Thank you once again for your comments.

Ric Rupnik
ricrupnik@yahoo.com

You can destroy a building but you cannot destroy the actual church. As far as I can tell with zooming in with Google Maps and comparing to the old maps, the original church building was either not destroyed or they built a new one on the same site.

If the building was destroyed, I cannot advise if the records went along with it or if they were recovered. You may find that some records exist in Warsaw Archives as this region was under Polish rule between the World Wars and many records were taken there.

I visited Volhynia last year. It is true that many cemeteries were bulldozed, especially if they happened to be where the military wanted to use them. I did not see them personally but have met others who went there, reporting that you could still see bones sticking out on the surface of the land. If they were not bulldozed, many stone markers were removed for personal use by farmers or others. As you may have noted, the cemetery in this town is some distance north of the church building so it may not have suffered any damage.

If you decide to travel to Volhynia, be aware that you cannot take a rental into or out of Ukraine because it is not an EU country. If you want to travel by car you will have to fly in (probably to Lviv which is closest) or take a train or bus. We rented a car in Kiev and had no problem getting around though secondary highways can be full of potholes and rough patching.

My expertise is with Germans who lived in Volhynia and they were 99% Lutheran or Baptist so I have no expertise regarding available records. I also have no specific info about your village of research, except to say that significant numbers of Germans lived in the region east and slightly south of your town. They too had migrated east to populate land leased, not from the Czar, but rather Polish noblemen who had extensive land holdings in western Volhynia. My research suggests that the Czar did not own any land here. I do have geographical expertise so thought I would try to help out.

Jerry

Does this musical piece have connections to Wolyn/Volyn?

A choir I sing with is doing a song which I believe has some sort of connection to Volyn. The Shostakovich piece is called Венули Ветры - V'enul'i v'etry which I think means "Blew the Winds"

Here's a YouTube recording from a choral festival in Moscow:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woWM_MDxyzA

When I questioned our director about the song, he responded

"I was researching a bit about the Volyn province. There is obviously no sea there, but one interesting large lake -- Lake Svityaz. Maybe this body of water became a sea in folklore (it's very large -- apparently one can't see the other side...)"

I would love to know if the song (please listen to it on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woWM_MDxyzA and see if you think it has any connections to Volyn.

Thank you!

Ric Rupnik
ricrupnik@yahoo.com

I'm a bit confused.

The post I read on this website from March 25, 2013 at about 1:30 stated:

"The filial RC Parish for Turopin was in Turzysk. It was called St. Frances de Sales and was comprised of appx 3,000 parishioners (from various local villages), belonging to Kovel Deanery. Church was destroyed in 1945 by the Soviets. Today Turzysk is called Turiysk = Турійськ, district center town of appx 6,000 in Vohlynska oblast/region > Ukraine."

In your response, you mentioned the Church still exists.

Can I ask...is it the same Roman Catholic Church (St. Francis de Sales) that was mentioned in the March 25, 2013 1:30 post, or is it a different Church and/or different religious place of worship? Did the Soviets destroy a different Church?

As additional information, I have been to western Europe, but never east of Vienna, though I hope to travel to this home area of my ancestors. I think my family began in Opole, then moved east to farm lands leased by the Czar, in then eastern Poland, now western Ukraine. A distant relative who spent time in Poland said she thought maybe all the Polish graves in the Wolyn/Volyn area were bulldozed and destroyed by either the Ukranians or the Soviets. I do not have any other additional information, just what she told me she thought MIGHT have happened there. It is my hope that a Church, with records of family in the area, and a cemetery with their graves intact and marked, still exists. Of course, if the Church is gone, and if the records are also gone, or if the cemeteries no longer exist, it makes the work a lot harder.

I wonder too, if any RUPNIKs still live in the area, or if everyone who survived relocated elsewhere. I don't know if everyone living there would be listed in a phonebook for the area..

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it!

Ric Rupnik
ricrupnik@yahoo.com
Richard - these coordinates 51.099951,24.533833 will take you to the cemetery in Turzysk where the church is located. Using older maps of the area, I find no cemetery marked at Turopyn.

The church in Turzysk is still there, a little further south in the town at 51.085754,24.52951

I would recommend you use the older maps for additional reference. Go to http://english.mapywig.org/news.php and in the left column under "Active Indexes", click on "WIG 1:100,000. From the map grid that appears, find the specific ones you need. Turzysk is on the Kowal map and Turopin on the map immediately below it. These old maps mark the churches and usually the known cemeteries with great accuracy though it is possible that some might be missed.

Jerry

I have no way of knowing if the cemetery is still there. That is precisely why I suggested that Andriy Dorosh, a Vohlynian local, helps you w/your research.

Has your family maintained contact w/extended family in SW Poland post WW2? This is another door that Andriy might be able to open for you.

I emailed Andriy this AM.

Wieś/village TUROPIN > gmina (judicial-tax district) Werba > powiat (adm district - county) Włodzimierz > województwo/region Wołyńskie > Reconstituted Poland (1921-1938). Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity from late 18th century to 1921 in this immediate area. This region was the Vohlynskaya gubernia > Czarist Russian domain until 1917, then Soviet domain.

1938 residents:
RUPNIK, Rudolf, wife Maria from Lipina, children Stanisław (from Turia), Marianna, Józef, Piotr (wife Marianna Kalmus), Jan (wife Rozalia Marki), Antoni.

The filial RC Parish for Turopin was in Turzysk. It was called St. Frances de Sales and was comprised of appx 3,000 parishioners (from various local villages), belonging to Kovel Deanery. Church was destroyed in 1945 by the Soviets. Today Turzysk is called Turiysk = Турійськ, district center town of appx 6,000 in Vohlynska oblast/region > Ukraine.

I also looked up Turia > Werba and found following. Used Bing Translator.

RUPNIK Stanisław 1907-1982 - s. Rudolfa i Marianny z d. Lipina, żona Bronisława 1912-1978 z d. Lewicka - c. Jana i Julii, córka Mirosława 06.1943 tu ur., mieszka w Środzie Śląskiej. Rodzina uniknęła śmierci dzięki młodemu Ukraińcowi, który pomagał im w gospodarstwie i zdradził jakie plany mają banderowcy. Kazał wszystko zostawić i uciekać. Ukrywali się w lesie.
-------------------------------------------
RUPNIK Stanisław 1907-1982-s. Rudolph and Marianna from Lipina, wife Bronisława, 1912-1978 with d. Lewicka-c. John and Julia, the daughter of Miroslaw 06.1943 born here, live in Środa Śląska. The family escaped death thanks to the young Ukrainian, who was a helper on their homestead, and realized what plans the partisans had for them. He told them to leave everything and flee. They hid in the forest.

Środa Śląska is located in SW Poland, former German territory.

All info above obtained from following site:
http://www.wolyn.ovh.org/

PS> Online translation is not particularly the most accurate. Make sure to have someone who is fluent in Polish translate for you. My Polish is not very good, and even I can see there are errors in the translation. I do know someone in Volodymir Volynskij, who can perform some further investigative work re church and take some pix of cemetery (if it still exists) for you. He also has access to archives in Lutsk. He is fluent in Polish, Russian, Ukrainian and English.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your response and for your information. It is all very interesting.

I would appreciate any other information you have concerning the Rupniks in Volyn. My grandfather listed Turopin, Russia Poland (now Turopyn, Ukraine) as his last place of residence on his ship manifest when he came to the United States in May, 1909.

Thank you for the offer of speaking with your friend. I would be very grateful for any information especially photos he might be able to provide, particularly at the location of the now-destroyed Church of St. Francis de Sales, and the Roman Catholic cemetery where my ancestors might have been buried.

I have access to Google Earth. Do you by any chance know the latitude and longitude of the location of the cemetery or where the Church once stood? I would be able to enter latitude and longitude into Google earth to see a view of today's layout of the area.

Again, thank you for your information. By the way, you chose a good username..... Mighthelp :) Your information helps a great deal.

Richard Rupnik
ricrupnik@yahoo.com

My family, I believe is from Przebrodz, I have a lot of the family history.
The name is Deitch, Deutsch or Daitch..we are descendants of Dov Ber Daitch.
My Grandfather Solomon/Schmul/Schloma Deitch was born there on February 25, 1904, His Father was Beryl Leib, known as Barnett Deitch, Born 1878 (not sure of birth date), His wife was Chaya Liba and I don't know when they got married or what her name was before Deitch. she was born 1880.
Beryl's father was Yosef/Joseph who was born probably 1850's, His wife was named Shifra and Yosef's father was Dov Ber. Any information you could find would be amazing. Thank you! Karen Catania/ Los Angeles, California USA

I have Gartz ancestors from Friedrichsdorf. Had the opportunity to visit the village last year. I do not recall a Szcepanski marriage connection though I do remember that family name as living in Rosenfeld, MB where I grew up in the '50s. Though the Gartz family initially settled near Steinbach, one branch lived at Waldersee and many other Gartz cousins ended up at Rosenfeld. Will check my database when I get home tonight and will get back to you further.

One thing to watch for is that Szczepanski is interchangeable with Stefan in SGGEE databases. I don't know if it translates that way but it was used that way by at least some branches of the Szczepanski families.

Jerry

I am trying to find information on the family of Michael Szcepanski born around 185?/186?. Michael married Augusta Gartz probably by 1886. They lived in the village Friedrichsdorf aka Solanka aka Solomka Province Rowno/Rovno.

I think their daughters Rosalia and Pauline were probably named for the Szcepanski side of the family.

I was told by a researcher this was his probable brother:
Franz Szczepanski, b. 1851, married 2 Nov. 1881 in
Rozyszcze to Pauline Mueller, b. 1856.

Of course there is a possibility. One cannot be a true genealogist without having a good dose of hope available. So I encourage you to try these resources.

The records also might mysteriously appear at some place at some time in the future. SGGEE has actually found such materials in parishes where records had not previously been found or acknowledged. We can hope that will happen for Wengrow and also, in my case, for Rawa Mazwoiecka.

Jerry

I regret that I have bad news, Monika.

My Gartz and Stubel ancestors from Volhynia also had origins in the Wengrow Parish. There are no Lutheran (Augsburgische) records available for that parish. It is believed they were destroyed in the war and no duplicates have been found to date.

To see what records are available from Russian Poland and Volhynia, go to https://sggee.org/research/parish.html

IF you happen to find some information about your family, from another source, please let me know so that I can follow-up on my own families as well.

Jerry

I seek relatives of the Stefan family from Volhynia:
Ludwig Stefan (born 1860 in Justynow/Poland)
married to Emilie Blüschke
in Nikolai church Studnetz in 1888 (where is this location?)

They had children:
Albert (born ca.1892 in ?), Fritz, Oswald, Leokardie, Therese and
Reinhold (born 25.01.1899) in Shikow /Zikow / Sikoff
near Rowno and Nowograd-Wolynsk (former Zwiahel)

In 1880/90 they immigrated from Justinow (near Wengrow) in Poland. Perhaps Ludwig's parents came with them:
Friedrich Stefan and Wilhelmine Lentke ?

About 1910 the family intended to go to America. Their journey ended in Labiau (Polessk) near Königsberg (Kaliningrad).
After WWI Reinhold married in Essen /Germany

Please reply if you know anything about them
Monika
===========================================================================================================0
Ich suche Verwandte der Familie Stefan / Stefanski aus Wolhynien:
Ludwig Stefan (geboren 1860 in Justynów / Polen)

Reinhold (geboren 1899.01.25) in Shikow / Zikow / Sikoff

Monika
Hello Jerry,

I am so happy about this map! From the "stumpp"-map I knew the approximate location. It is a great pleasure to see "Zikow"-letters on the map.
For a long time I searched for this location. In 1928 the German registrators read "Kowno" instead of "Rowno" and so they wrote the wrong town in the marriage certificate....

Thank you so much!
Monika
Monika,

Shikow is just a few km east of Horodnytsya which can be found on Google Maps using the coordinates [50.807399,27.315273]

On this pre WW II map:
http://www.mapywig.org/m/WIG100_300DPI/P45_S45_EMILCZYN_1931...
it is at the bottom left corner with the spelling Zikow.

It is just north of Anastasivka which you can also see on the Google Map. Though not too far from Rowno, it would have been on the Russian side of the border between WW I and WW II.

Jerry

Kamenier and Sinofsky in Zhitomir

I seek information on Moshe Sinofsky who was hakohnen probably in Zhitomir. His daughter is Bella Sinofsky Kaminier. She married Arhon Kaminier. Their only child was Isaac Jacod Kaminier. All this happened in Zhitomir. Isaac Jacob was born in 1878. Arhon was apparently shot by the Russian army for resisting conscription about 1900. Isaac Jacob came to yhe US about 1901. Bella (Beile) emigrated about 1904 via Canada and St. Albans, vt.

I am looking for some birth records from the Evangelical Baptist Church of Cholossnov. I see that you were able to get that information from the Church headquarters in Bolinski (Volynska). Do you know how I can contact them?

Thank you very much
Beth
Searching Roseneau/Beitler
