Classification: Query
Have you looked over what information you have received in Ukraine's board?
Hannia - Hania - Mighthelp is very much still active on the board that you originally posted on.

What surname are you researching?

What religion? Any idea what the ethnic background was?

To what country did immigration take place?

Are you using documentation or are you going by oral tradition for the name of town? Has there been any other town/village/guberniya mentioned?

Use Shtetlseeker to view all transliteration variation of town. PS> During the time frame you are researching, was Kamenyets Podolskij, you are searching for, a part of the Old Russian Empire or was it part of the Austro Hungarian Empire? A little history reading about these empires would not hurt. It will help orient you geographical. This is a very difficult area to do research, because the geography kept changing hands.

When using Shtetseeker, type in name of town as you have it. There is Soundex (sounds like) built into the search engine.

I can provide you with links to appropriate archives, but without more focused information you will be wasting your time.

Some general history/map links for both Austro Hungarian Empire and Old Russian Empire.

PS> The Kamenets Podolskij (formerly in Podolia) now in Khmelnytska Oblast was part of Russia at one time, but does it fit into the time frame of your search? If you provide me with answers to some of the questions I have asked in this post, it is possible that I can provide you w/links that will help in your specific search.

If your Immigrant Ancestor was Jewish, records from nineteenth century were held at the Kamenetz Pidolsky Archives until fairly recently. Unfortunately in April 2003, there are a horrific fire there. There is much being done to rescue any archival documents that were not burned. Most of the water damaged documents have been sent to Khmelnytskij State/Oblast Archives and probably will not be made available to the general public for a long time.

If you Immigrant Ancestor was Christian Orthodox, consider submitting an inquiry to the Kiev Historical Archives. LDS/Mormon Genealogy Library does have some older, early 19th century, vital records.

Are you sure you Ancestor was from Kamenetz Podolskij, a beautiful medieval city sitting high on a rocky bluff above the Smotrych River, w/origins dating back to 10/11th century OR from a village in that district? Emigrants frequently referred to their district center as place of origin for geographical reference, because their own villages were small.
