My grandfather was (Chazan) Moses Charles (Maurice) Wolfson (died Oct 1970) son of Aaron Wolfson (Zamchaver), his son Morley Wolfson was my father. My grandfather was born in Tradegar and although was in London (Hackney) when my father was born in 1936. My grandparents Maurice and Annie Wolfson ran a hostel on Victoria Park Road in Hackney for Orthodox Refugees under the Hackney Aid Committee for Refugee Children linked to the Chief Rabbi's Religious Emergency Council led by Rabbi Dr Solomon Schonfeld. They recruited a matron and a small staff to run the hostel. The hostel was used as a clearing house for children for whom suitable homes could not be found on arrival, but who were eventually housed and replaced by new arrivals. When war was declared, all the children and staff were evacuated to Norfolk. Other children were evacuated with their schools. My grandparent's committee continued to keep a watchful eye on the children in Norfolk and provided whatever was necessary for them. My grandparents and father were eventually evacuated to Tilehurst,Reading during the war and then settled in Manchester. This war time activity is documented in two books - "I Came Alone" by Bertha Leverton 1990 and "And the Policeman Smiled" by Barry Turner 1990. My grandmother writes in her submission to the book, "I came Alone" that she eventually lost contact with those she had been involved with at the hostel.
Anyone who knows anything of this amazing wartime work, please contact me.
Thanks
Anthony
