I am trying to determine the accurate name of a town that a Rothmann relative listed in their naturalization papers in early 1900s as "Cherkoff". This person's sibling, in a separate document, listed her birth place as near Tarnopol, so I am assuming that these two siblings are likely from the same town in the Ternopil area.
There is not a town by the name of Cherkoff, past or present, that I have been able to determine. Looking at lists of towns in Ukraine in this region, my best guess is that "Cherkoff" is the modern town of Chortkiv. Can anyone confirm this as the likeliest choice, or are there other towns in the Ternopil region with similar sounding names that I should investigate? The family I am researching is Jewish, if that is meaningful to determining the real name of "Cherkoff".
