Hello Jerry. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Andriy Dorosh (MATERRA) lives in Vohlyn. I can vouch for him. I have passed along some difficult tasks his way and feedback has been exc. He always goes the extra mile and has been very successful at digging up info, including info on surviving families and their locations post WW2. He is fluent in English, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian. He has access to archives in Lutsk, Zhytomir, Rivne and Kyiv. If you should come across anyone looking for a good researcher and/or travel guide, please do not hesitate to recommend him.

Hannia-Hania-Mighthelp

Yes, most certainly traveling with a group or a guide can be a better way to go. But I like a sense of adventure so we tried it this way and for us it worked out well. Unfortunately I don't think a trip back to Ukraine will happen. In North America we have a term that refers to things in our "bucket list". It means things we want to do before I die. Though I hope to live for a few years yet, this item was on my bucket list.

Having a guide can be especially helpful if you want to visit an Archive to get family information. I already had extensive information about my family and they left what was then Russia before the Archives started to collect their information so I did not feel they would have much information for me.

Jerry

Jerry,

I understand you so well when you tell about the roads. I see these potholes and drive in the ditches very often :)
Most trips I organize also start either in Kyiv or Lviv, people arrive by plane mostly. I have read your post about your trip and I think I could be of some help here when you come to Ukraine. Please, feel free to contact me if you're interested.

Regards,
Andriy

Loise,

I do not see any 2 surnames for one person on your list. That's probably Google Translator's fault. Which one do you mean?

There are many Kowalchuks but I understand the only male descendant you know about - George moved to Germany.

The data on Zima we have does not let us connect 2 people on the list living in the village with Peter Zima, Nadia's brother. We miss data on one or even 2 generations to do that. You need to do the local research in the village to try to do that. The rest were sisters who changed surnames.
Artemchuk, Puhayko, Palamarchuk - I do not see these surnames in the village nowadays. Still, the database I use is quite outdated and there also may be some old information missing - I already had this sort of situation several times. It is also possible girls got married and moved to the neighbor villages or Rivne
which happens often.
There are
- 50 Puhaykos in Rinve
- 47 Artemchuks in Rivne
- 141 Palamarchuks in Rivne

Again, the place to start researching from is Bila Krynytsia, one can only get this sort of information having interviewed the locals.

Before doing research in the village it is worth checking the archives 1st to have more chances to catch the trace when in the village. Have you done any records research yet? Unfortunately, I do not see anything else online which can be be helpful at the moment. You are welcome to contact me if you decide to proceed and need help.

Also, I can offer you to take a trip to the village while staying at home. It is a kind of a virtual tour to your village, a video about it. Please, check my profile details to find my webpage address and learn more.

Regards,
Andriy

We (my brother from Edmonton and I) were brave and rented a car in Kiev. It is a 3-4 hour drive to Rowno from there depending on the amount of road construction you might encounter. The highway between the cities is in very good condition (mostly 4 lane) and you would be OK at your village as well because it is virtually just off the highway. Gas is readily available. Cost to fill a tank was just a little more than here in Canada. People at gas stations don't speak English but they did at the hotel we stayed at. The hotel restaurant also had English language menus. A good supper meal could be had for $8. The cost to rent a car was high because you must purchase the local insurance with it. Your credit card or personal vehicle insurance will not cover you in Ukraine. You cannot take a rental car into Ukraine nor take one out of Ukraine because it is not an EU country.

The hotel in Kiev was about $100 (will cost you a lot more to stay downtown - we stayed in a suburb) and the motel at Rowno (a little old but very clean) was only $40 per night (again a lot more to stay downtown in the city).

We felt quite safe everywhere we went though we did not go out at night. Did what we could to avoid contact with police by not speeding. They are noted for being corrupt.

Other 2 lane highways are about the same as Saskatchewan rural roads with potholes and bad patching. If you have other villages to visit that are off the beaten path you might encounter really bad roads. To reach one of my villages, it took us over an hour to drive 12 km. It was cobblestone road that had not been maintained since WW II (or so it seemed). Holes everywhere, sharp stones sticking up in places. Sometimes it was better to drive through the ditch and field which you can do if the weather is dry.

I support a child in Rowno through HART Ministries so we arranged for a translator through them to visit the child and then paid her to go with us to the villages. She would be OK as a guide in and immediately around Rowno but doubt she would have been able to find the villages we went to. We planned our routes well in advance using Google and other maps. Google can tell you where a road exists but it cannot tell you what condition it is in.

Jerry Frank
Calgary

Hi Andriy,
I do not speak or read Ukrainian. I will try Google Translate first and see if it works.
Note I have invited you to my tree PAF Olley etc which has 67,000 entries, and the Zima line included.

Nadia's siblings that did not emigrate are:
Marya (m. Artemchuk)- saved from mass grave by brother?
Hanya (m. Puhayko)
Wesley (underground, captured & executed WWII)
Peter
Eugenie (m. She would have been b. ca 1920
Based on the historical map provided for you, the actual location of Helesin would be just a little west of the location shown in the Google Maps link provided. You can tell by the road that angles off the main highway to the SW which still matches that on the historical map. Use the coordinates [ 50.606774,26.372638 ] to find it.

I was in this area last year. We stayed at a motel on the highway right next to Kolodenka and walked there, taking pictures of two nice churces in the town. Our translator lived in Horodyszcze so we traveled this route several times during our stay.

Sorry but cannot help with your family info. We were searching our German ancestry, many of whom lived on the Lubormirka estates.

Jerry

Hi Lois,

In Helesin there were 24 houses,301 citizens, a school and, of course, a sawmill which is a must in a village located by the forest in 1887.

What you say about the forest is correct, you can see it on the map since the beginning of the 20th century I have attached. It is the village of Helesin and the red circle shows the forester's hut - "leśniczówka" in Polish. Also, as you see, the village is located by the road and there are some houses which there which could be that inn. I also see the church but there are no records online. It is impossible to find information on the inn owner online either. It is worth checking Rivne Archives, there may be something there.

There's a memorial to the villagers who died in the WWII in every village in Ukraine. There must be one in Bila Krynytsia/former Helesin too.

I see 2 people with Zyma surname in Bila Krynytsia:

Svitlana daughter of Oleg
Sergiy son of Mykola

but there must be more.

There are about 45 Kovalchuks on the list:

As you see, there are some people on the list born as far as 1913.
I am extremely grateful for your reply and the time you are generously giving to assist. I am excited to hear more from you.
My grandmother, Nadezda, spoke of a forest nearby. Her grandfather, Zachary Kowalczuk (wife Tatiana) owned a road-side Inn.
Is there a WWII memorial nearby, a mass grave of executed villagers?
hope you can direct me to sources.
Thanks again. Will wait with interest.
Lois, Edmonton, Alberta
Hi olleycdn,

The name of Helesin does not exist nowadays.

Here is the record on the village found in Polish Gazetteer since 1888:

"Just a few verts (1 verst equals 1.0668 kilometres which is 3,500 feet) from the village of Dworzec there's a village of Helesin which borders with the villages of Barmaki and Basowkat. The villahe lies on the plain lands, it is the property of Lubomirski noble family from Rowne. It is not big, it consists of several tens of houses, the area is about 1521 morgen (1 Polish morgen, the unit of measurement of land is about 0,5ha). The village was founded not so long ago by Prince Joseph Lubomirski, the Major of Romanow who left his mansion for his wife in 1794 created this settlement and named it after his daughter. Later, about 1820, half of his peasants moved to Helesin from the nearby village of Kolodenka.
Helesin is often called Bialokrynica because the area located on the left side of the village, on the border with Horodyszcz village has been called Bialokrynica for quite a long time already. It is mentioned in the old documents since 16th century. It is said that Bialokrynica area
belongs to the village of Horodyszcza........."

Bialokrynica (the Ukrainian spelling is Bila Krynytsia): http://goo.gl/maps/U4M98

I see 2 people with Zima surname living in Bila Krynytsia nowadays

I will have a closer look at your inquiry and get back with more information later.

Regards,
Andriy
Looking for family members with ancestry links to Philomen or Filomen Zima (wife Evdokia Kowalczuk) my great grandparents. Greek orthodox. According to their dau. my gmother,Nadezda, they were more well to do peasants in or near this old village likely because they had an orchard. Nadezda emigrated to Canada 1926. Does anyone have historical information bout Helesin or info about this family?
Lois

To see all variant transliterations of Yarosh use Steve Morse site, which uses Soundex code. Use Gold Form. Submit your surname in SOUNDS LIKE. Under ethnicity click Russian, Ruthenian and any other family ethnicity. Click search.

I got about 750+ variant Yarosh hits that came thru Ellis Island.
http://stevemorse.org/

Michaluk = Михалюк (Michaliuk). There are over 3400 Michaliuk's in Ukraine. Which village/town is your family from? There are Michaliuk's in the town of Rivne. If you had the place name, you could check the LDS films.
https://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlc/

There are many Sheremet in Rivne, what is his name and phone number? I can provide you with an address, and you can write him.

There could be many reasons why you are not connecting. 1. In most cases they do not trust strangers. 2. Due to poor connections due to old phones and phone lines. 3. I understand that when you sell a house in Ukraine, it is cheaper to have your phone number remain with the new owner of the house, so therefore it is possible that you are not speaking to a Sheremet. 4. North American accents and our pronunciations of Ukrainian names make us difficult to be understood.

I have not had any success when phoning a family in Ukraine while doing an ancestry search. A few will take the time to speak to you.

Ah - that clarifies the location. It only appears on the modern map as a railway station whereas an older map shows it as applicable to the village now known as Nahime.

Unfortunately that does not change what I can report as available information. The parish records would have covered this area as well. It would be interesting to determine if they were in fact Germans or not. If they attended a Lutheran or Baptist church, they were probably German. If they were Catholic, then they were probably of Polish origin.

Jerry
I have not been able to find a village called Ulbariv anywhere in Ukraine. However, a few km NW of Rivne (Rowno) is Obarow, a place name that would sound quite similar when spoken.

There was a Makowski family (Gottlieb and Albertine nee Brock) living in Sergiewka about the same distance north of Rivne on the south bank of the Horyn River in 1882 where a daughter, Amalie was born. Though it sounds like a Polish surname, these folk were German Lutherans.

Records after 1885 are difficult to find but you might find some help at http://www.sggee.org . In addition to web resources there, you will find a free mailing list you can join to post questions.

Jerry

Near is a relative term. The one MightHelp pointed to is north of Rowno / Rivne which is some distance from Dubno but could be considered near depending on the context. It is possible there is another one closer to Dubno but this seems to be the only one we could find.

Other names for that village are Solomka and Friedrichsdorf. It was significantly bigger in the 19th century with up to 600 Germans living there, split between this main village and Solomka Nakoty and Solomka Srednie a short distance to the south. The latter two are no longer on modern maps but you can still see the imprint of the village lots on satellite images.

If you are researching a German family, get back to me as I may be able to offer more help. My maternal ancestors lived there.

Jerry

Thanks for replying. You've given me lots of helpful information!
Since I first posted this inquiry, I have found even more evidence confirming that my grandfather came from Kharucha Vel'ka. You can locate it on Russian language sites offering weather, etc. but the maps always zero in on Kolodiyivka. So it's great to have confirmation that these places are one and the same.
I'm pretty sure my grandfather was born a Ukrainian/Greek Catholic. He is listed as such in a passenger manifest and he was married in a Ukrainian Catholic church in New York. (His name on the marriage certificate is spelled Aleksa Kowal.) He married a Polish Roman Catholic, though, and when the moved to Staten Island they started going to a Roman Catholic church.
Do you know if there are surviving vital records for the Ukrainian Catholic church there? The records for my grandmother's home town (Zalozce, Austria now Zaliztsi, Ukraine) are available through the FHL and I have had great success in finding my ancestors there. It would be great to find the same stuff for Alex/Alexey/Oleksa Kowal.
His mother's name, as he wrote it on various documents, was Wasylia Chypil. Do you know if there are other people with that name in the area today?
John
PS: The beet reference cracked me up. It was always a struggle to get me to eat my beets when I was a kid!
