Yiddish Translation Needed

Can anyone translate (handwritten) Yiddish? I have numerous post cards and a few letters from 1939, pre-WWII exchanged between my great uncles, one in the U.S. and one in Pinsk, Minsk Gubernia. They are BEAUTIFUL, but we really want to try to figure out what happened to him before his family perished in the Holocaust. Can anyone help? A couple of samples are attached.

His mother and sister supposingly became nuns in Romania.

i am not sure about the spelling of his surname - Oduzengko or Oduzengkou according to my grandmother's identity (translated from Greek characters).

any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

Одуденко or Одияненко or Одуденко are variants of the surname. I am sure there are probably more. Do you have any documentation for Grandmother, where we can see surname in the original Cyrillic Alphabet? How about any church records???

Any suggestions for further research. I have done ancestry dna. Male relatives live in Canada. Ancestry dna not available on Canada. Sme were Roman Catholic in North America.
For resources and help with that you should best contact their minority organizations in Serbia. Information on such organizations you will most accurately obtain through Russian embassy.

http://www.ambasadarusije.rs/ru/soot.php

For these migrants, many documents and materials are available in historical archives in Serbia.

You should also try to contact through Russian Orthodox Church their temple of the Holy Trinity in Belgrade that was built in 1924. by the refugees from Russia and still serves this community.

http://www.mospat.ru/ru/

According to the current priest who is himself from one such family, they have kept records of the congregation.

http://www.politika.rs/rubrike/Drustvo/Na-komadu-ruske-zemlj...

EDIT: A book in Serbian you should look for:

"Russian Refugees in Pančevo 1919-1941".

The author has extensively studied the records of the Russian Orthodox church in Belgrade and the community.

http://www.srpskadijaspora.info/vest.asp?id=6879

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
www.rodoslovlje.com

My Dad's Russian name was Gyorgi (sp?) Stepanov or Stephanoff. His anglicized name was George Joseph Stephens. I have found border crossing information for him and his sister, Melania Chorolsky, her husband, Dimitri Chorolsky and children, Anna and Jim (aka) Eugene. There is a census from Alberta Canada for his brother Nicke (aka Michael or Archie) Stevens as well as his wife and children. They are my uncles family...Their father's name may have been Ivan Stepanov(ff) and mother Eglekeria Emilianova.. Another story has it that the father was Stepan Yuschenko or Urchenko. I found a Giorgi Steffanoff And a Michael Steffanoff who came from Bulgaria, but am unable to confirm that as my family as I found people in the US by that name.
Re: White Russian I do not know. This came from My uncle's Daughter who is deceased. I was under the impression that my father who was the youngest son left Russia in a hurry possibly as an army deserter? The family had property that was sold to fund their escape. My aunt came by way of Siberia according to her daughter's family . Perisloka Tava. Sp?

I have wondered if they were in favor of the status quo ibut might have run afoul of the Tsar's regime somehow. My uncle's granddaughter overheard a conversation regarding a family member having been shipped off to Siberia and never hear from again?
there is also an Ivan Stepanov listed in the Jewish gen site as a victim of the halocaust ??
Sachartzuk (another variant transliterational spelling would be Sacharczuk) = Сахарчук in Ukrainian

Immigration records indicate that this surname was found in what was the old Vohlynskaya gubernia > Czarist Russia then Soviet Union from late 18th century to 1921. During the Interwar Period the region came under Reconstituted Poland's domain and the large gubernia was broken down into several smaller wojowodstwo/regions. Post WW2 these regions were all attached to SSR Ukraine under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.

Today there are appx 1,500 people in Ukraine w/surname Сахарчук, many living in NW Ukraine, in what was once the Vohlynskaya region.

I noticed an Ivan, using your spelling of surname, heading to West Virginia. He was emigrating from a village in the Dubno district of what is today the Rivnenska oblast/region, turn of the 19th century Old Vohlynskaya gubernia
===================================
Do you have any family history that you could share? Given names, appx immigration yrs and where immigrant ancestors settled upon immigration might help pinpoint EXACT location of origin, enabling you to move your research to Ukraine.

As per the Odessa Library Collection, the Axtmann surname shows up in Baden > Odessa. German roots were likely Alsace-Lorraine = Reichsland> Elsass-Lothringen.
http://www.odessa3.org/
============================================================
Baden was founded in 1808 in Kutschurga district > Kherson gubernia. (Baden was technically in Bessarabia.) In 1859 there were 149 homes there. In 1943 there the population was 2,186.

Today called Lymanske. Lymanske (Лиманське in Ukrainian) is a town in the Rozdilnianskyi raion/district of the Odessa Oblast in Ukraine. It is located along the east side of the Kuchurhan Reservoir on the border with Transnistria in Moldova.

A village called Selz (named after Seltz in Alsace) was established at this location along the Kutschurgan Liman in 1808 by Roman Catholic German and Alsatian (French citizens) immigrants to the Kutschurgan Valley, then part of the Russian Empire. It received its present name after the remaining German residents were driven from the area by the advancing Soviet army in 1944. The former German villages of Baden and Kandel located just to the north and south, respectively, of Selz have been absorbed into the current Ukrainian town.

1944 map of Baden
http://www.blackseagr.org/maps/Baden%201944%20Map.jpg

http://www.grhs.org/chapters/krig/villages/baden_odessa.htm

http://www.blackseagr.org/learn_odessa.html

http://valery-mock.livejournal.com/26837.html

The Creator of following link, a published author, shares your Kutschurga district heritage. I was hoping there was a website like the Dutch have like genlias or wies. Not sure of international law, but the Dutch have made records available in the timeframe I am looking. Btw, no offense taken, I enjoy the wild goose chase.

There have been several attempts at guidance here.

Frankly, I do not think you know that what you are looking for is not available to you as per intl law. You cannot arbitrarily go wading thru records under 75/100 yrs old, whether it's in Ukraine or the USA. There is a legal procedure that has to be followed. Without a PRIVACY RELEASE in most cases you can't go anywhere near personal records that are under 75/100 yrs old.

100 yrs ago (1913) Odessa was in Kherson gubernia > Czarist Russia. Documents were kept as per religion. By the emigration date, I can assume your wife is Jewish.

Become a member at Jewishgen and submit the surnames and place/s of interest. That is certainly not the way to perform accurate genealogy research, but that is all you can hope to do.

Additionally, get a better handle on Jewish history in this region. Many early 19th century Jews in Southern Czarist Russia were economic migrants from the northern gubernias, specifically the ones in what is Belarus, Poland and the Baltics today. Many Odessa (the regional capital)Jews today are descendants of people from what was Bessarabia and those records are in Moldovia, not in Ukraine.

No offense meant, but you will be on a wild goose chase and not a hunt until you understand the basics and nature of this kind of research.

In order to get a reply, it's a good idea to give more information, including names of grandparents or great-grands. Possible years of birth? Did they immigrate and when? Did they come to the US? Where did they live in the US? Do you know if the ancestors lived in the city of Odessa or in a surrounding village?

Marilyn - Board Administrator

VOLKOVICH/BALBER

I am searching for descendants of my grandparents siblings.

My grandparents were Avrum VOLKOVICH and Elka Benyominovna BALBER (sounds like Bullbeer). Avrum was a jeweler/goldsmith with a factory in Odessa. He and my grandmother often travelled to see merchants in Belguim and France. The children went to school at the gymnasium. The family was evicted from their Odessa home during the revolution and moved to an apartment block on or near a street called "Kanut", perhaps Kanatnaia. I have been told that their
original home now houses an embassy or government office. At one time after the revolution the family manufactured buckles for military uniforms. There were 8 children who immigrated to Canada between 1924 and 1928 - Berta(b1900), Benjamin (b1902), Clara (b1906),Gitel(b1908), Reisel(b1909), Grisha (b1911), Lenivia (b1914), Liouissia (b1919).

Avrum had a brother, also a jeweler married Elkas twin sister. The children of that family were Benjamin, Morris, Joe, Sonia and Esther immigrated to Canada and the US.

I am aware of another brother whose children or grandchildren (an engineer and a nurse) immigrated from Russia to Rehovot Israel in the 1960's -1970's.

I do not know where the Volkovich family originated or how long they lived in Odessa, only that the grandmother, my great grandmother, had to travel by train to visit. My grandmother, Elka was born in Kishinev 1879. Her parents were Benyamin BALBER and Gitel.

I'm eager to identify any existing family. Any information or suggestions would be appreciated. Please contact me at greystoke@attcanada.ca

I found neither Арнаут nor Арнаутob in village or connected to village. Write the village mayor and inquire if any property is still held by Arnautov Family. I do doubt it, but no one can stop you from asking. Maybe you can get some guidance, where to inquire regarding property once owned in village.

Thank you!

By the way, you named Odessa phone directory (supposed on line).

Actually I have a more personal an important question wich I never could manage. One of my relatives (my Mother in love, lving in Romania) knows that she has a stepsister in Odesa, born about 1941-42. Hers name, Cornelia may be a quite unusual for Russia. I wonder if the phone directory could be used for a preliminary selection. By the way, married's phones use to be on the name of husbands.

The same question about Teofan (in Odesa) could be asked about Sikorsky. He was a doctor for my Great Father family and him self father for the engineer creating Sikorsky helicopters :-)

Thanks for some advices.

P.S. Teofan had his busines in Bilhorod-Dnisterskij county.

???phone directory could be used for a preliminary selection

You are asking for magic in a predominantly non-digitized country.
----------------------
I thought the Sikorski were from Kyiv.

The Belgorod you are referring to is Bilhorod-Dnisterskij or Bolhrad? Do you have a specific village name as well?
These Arna-u-tov are listed in Odessa Telephone Directory. Additionally, there are a dozen or so Arnautova (female version of surname in question) also listed. I am posting only males.

Keep in mind that part of what was Bessarabia > Tsarist Russia is also Moldova today.

There are appx 850+ males in Ukraine (mostly Eastern Ukraine)w/this surname.

The origin of the surname is interesting. It has Albanian roots. Anauts were border soldiers, who fought w/Romanian and Bulgarian soldiers in Southern Russia (today Ukraine). During the Russian-Turkish Wars the name became pejorative, meaning evil man, infidel, heathen.

The surname also shows up in 1612 as an anointed noble Russian family, that received major properties in Orel region.
Keep in mind that in 1905 Odessa was in the Kherson region. He too was born in Odessa.

RUN A SEARCH FOR THE SURNAME USING RUSSIAN, if you haven't already.
Odessa, Russia = Odeska, Ukraine?

I researched a woman who immigrated to the US from "Odessa, Russia", but when I looked it up in Google Maps, it showed Ukraine. Looking for the Odessa board, I found this one with posts about Odessa. Is Odeska the Ukrainian spelling or is Odessa anglicized (so Odeska is correct in Russian or Ukrainian)?

Hi Michael,

I just came across your post and was wondering about your relatives in Landau. My great-great-grandmother was Elizabetha Stolz b. 1864 in Landau. Her husband was Joseph Kunz b. 1864 in Landau. Their children were Magadalena Kunz b. 1888 and Florentina Kunz b. 1890 in Landau. Any chance we're related?

Marcie Wirtz Cheung

Lisa, My great grandparents, Julius & Tillie Berfield traveled from a town near Odessa, Ukraine to NYC in 1885...they then settled in St Louis and began a family in 1886...
How do I know this ?? I first found my great grandparents 1900 census report ...I then had to search all the names of the family...male members are easier....a few month's of searching and I found my grandmothers death certificate which indicated where she was from and who her fathers name was.."near Odessa, Russia" ( now Ukraine )
I then went to www.jewishgen.com trying to connect the dots ..not easy but rewarding...
Thoughts??

Hi My name is Lisa Geren..

My grandmother was Rose Shucart; she was born in St. Louis around 1898. I have no idea where her family emigrated from, nor do I know that name of her parents. She married my grandfather, Joseph Katzif. I know for sure she had at least 1 sister and possibly a brother. I also know that she was related to Julia Goldstein in St. Louis, but I'm not sure how. She also had a cousin, Robert Schwartz. My dad died nearly 40 years ago, and his sister died 15 years ago, and this information was not passed on to me.
