Hello, Yes. I am certain about Barbara's birthplace - Radgoszcz, Poland. I wrote a letter (using the Google translator) and received a baptism record for my grandmother, Barbara Podoseck. Fortunately for me, several family members have been at this family search for quite a while. My cousin sent me a packet of information in 1998 with many copies of documents. She wrote a letter giving me the facts as she knew them . . . surnames Podoseck and Swaczy, birthdates and places of birth for each family member, immigration dates, citizenship and naturalization dates, etc., etc. Included among the papers was one page from my grandfather Simon's prayer book listing the names and dates of birth for each child. I remembered stories my father told when I was a child and pieced as much together as I could. So, I knew the families whereabouts after they came to the U. S. Consequently, I accessed census records.

How Barbara wound up with Simon is a good question ...maybe love. How unlikely was a woman of Polish origin and a Ukrainian Ruthenian marrying in those days? And, the problem of where to look for records Roman or Orthodox is another. The last three children were born in different villages . . . Oskrzesince, Strzeliska and Brzodowce? Questions there? Radgoszcz is about 300 miles from L'viv (place of birth for ihree sons). Incidentally, there is another son Jan Swaczyi who immigrated here on Jan 03, 1910, on the Barbarossa.

I am back doing Swaczy research after a lengthy break. Working on the maternal line of the family. So, this is where I am. It may be time to think about help. However, I have more info about the other lines family records. So, maybe I'll take a shot first at the FHL for those records. Any comments or suggestions you would have would be greatfly appreciated. Thanks so much for your input.

gbhgirl

JI = YI sound
------------

Bukaczowce had its own GC and RC Parishes.
-------------
Technically Poland did not exist as a geopolitical entity from late 18th century to 1919.
---------------------
Micro-ethnic Ruthenian group, Lemko, lived in the historical region called Lemkivszyna. Today that is SE Poland.
---------------------
Something doesn't make sense here. How did Barbara land up in Bukachivtsi? What is the family story? Are you sure of this place name?

There are minimally 15 place names called Radgoszcz in Poland. Most are quite a distance from Rohatyn. Look at variant language place names: Rohatyn - Rogatyn - Rogatin.
Immigrants frequently referred to their county center as place of origin, because in most cases their villages were small and this created at least a geographic reference.

PS> As per arrival manifest which lists Barbara, Josef and other two sons, her father-in-law (Semen's Father)was called Roman. They left him in Bukaczowce. The ship's clerk had good handwriting.
========================
If you don't tackle the metrykal films, you will just continue going around in circles. OR you could hire someone locally to do the work for you. I can always recommend someone, if you like. It isn't as gratifying, but it will certainly answer your questions.
Thank you for writing with some new information. I found some info on how to obtain Metrical Records. I don't mind attempting to grapple with the Polish language and Latin, however, grappling with the Cyrillic alphabet might be beyond me. I'm pleased to see the Swaczy surname in Cyrillic though. I do know that my grandfather, Simon returned to Galicia (Bukaczowce) in 1909. Somehow his name was mangled. The first crossing, in 1906, shows his name on the manifest as Simon Swaczy but, on the Ellis Island site, it is Szymon Swaczyji (what does the "ji" mean?. His wife, Barbara and sons came to the US in November 1910. On the original manifest, his ethnicity is Ruthenian and place of birth is Bukaczowce. His wife, Barbara was from Radgoszcz, Poland. The sons and Simon adopted their mother's ethnicity upon arrival. I've grappled with his ethnicity over this past year. Also, my brother had a Y-chromosome test. The results appears to indicate that he is Ukrainian or Polish. Some suggest Lemko. I doubt he would have practiced the Orthodox Catholic religion, if he were Polish. My mother told me several times that my father insisted Simon was Orthodox. Is it true that there was no Roman Catholic Church in Bukaczowce during the period 1850-1910? Thanks, again for the information.
gbhgirl

Hello, I want to followup on my Swaczy (Polish) Svatchi ancestors. About a year ago, I posted on this surname. Also, I searched the Ellis Island site and found about 10 Swaczys and a few others with a spelling close to this name. Almost all were from Bukaczowce Ukraine. Hoever, a closer inspection shows that these people were born in villages nearby i.e., Kolokolin, Czernew and Sloboda - to name three - most were in Rohatyn. I believe the Swaczys may have been a family or clan. Reading the manifests was difficult but, I learned that most were Ruthenians as was my Grandfather Szymon Swaczy. If there are any comments, I would appreciate hearing from you. And, are there any Swaczys or Svatchis living in Bukachevtsi? Thanks.
gbhgirl

Lonia (Lonie, Loni) and Gologory (Holohory) to Chicago 1904-1914

Between 1904 and 1914, over 50 people from Lonia and a few relatives from Gologory immigrated to Chicago. Lonia (Lonie/Loni) and Gologory (Holohory) are villages between Lviv (Lwow, Lemburg) and Tarnopol (Ternopil). Before WWI, they were part of the Austrian Empire. Between the wars, they were in Poland, and now they are in Ukraine. The people are Ukrainians. Members the same families are sometimes recorded in passenger records as Ruthenian, and sometimes Polish, so this shouldnʼt be seen as a significant marker of ethnicity. There seems to have been a large Jewish migration from Lonia to the United States before 1904, but it doesnʼt appear to have any connection with the Chicago group.

Every male immigrant from Lonia is listed as a laborer or farm laborer, and every female immigrant is listed as a maid or domestic servant.

The first members of the Chicago group actually went to Philadelphia. In May of 1905, Stefan Lukasz (Szczepan Lukaszow) and Iwan (John) Tremba arrived at Ellis Island on the Armenia. These men were married laborers in their early 30s. They were headed for Philadelphia to find Szymon (Simon, Sam, Semko) Sobeczko. Simon Sobeczko was Lukaszʻ brother-in-law and Trembaʼs friend.

Two years later, in April 1907, another group of men from Lonia came over on the Batavia. Michal Bialowicki (Belubasy? Bilawacka?) was the oldest at 39 and the only married one. Peter (Piotr) Sobeczko, Simonʼs brother was only 18. The rest, Tomasz Lewiniec, Frank Lukasz (Franko Lukaszow), Hrynko Sawicki, and Wasyl Dubas were in their twenties. Dubas was the only one who went to Philadelphia to find a Maturjko whose first name I canʼt decipher. The rest headed for 91 Ontario Street in Chicago where Stefan Lukasz and Simon Sobeczko were now living. Sawicki was the brother- in-law of the Sobeczko brothers, and was also connected to the Lukasz brothers through the Makolondra family still in Lonia.

Two years later, in May of 1909, the Pennsylvania brought 16 more Lonia people to Ellis Island. All were headed for Chicago. These were all men in their twenties and thirties except for two teenage sisters, Anna Makolondra and Tekla Makolondra Maturjko, who came over with Teklaʼs husband Dmytro Maturjko. Anna and Teklaʼs father back in Lonia was Hrynko Makolondra. There was a man named Hrynko Makolondra aboard the ship, but he was only 24. His father back in Lonia was Feodor. This Hrynko (also called Harry) was to meet his cousin Hrynko Sawicki who was now living on Green Street with Peter Sobeczko, Frank Lukasz, and Tomasz Lewiniec. The Green Street house was also the destination of Anna, Tekla, and Dmytro, as well as Pawel Sawicki (Hrynkoʼs brother), Michal Nadzberny and Iwan Salabaj (the Sawickisʼ brother-in-laws), and Jan Zanier (a Sobeczko cousin). Mytro Hadkj went to the same address to find his brother Tomasz Lewiniec along with their friend Petro Glusko. Oleksa Irema, Dmytro Kulik, and Oleksa Tkaczyk went to find Frank Lukasz at the old 91 Ontario address. Petro Malicki and Stefan Haraszniak also went to Ontario St. to find Michal Bialowicki, and Michal Szkoruda went there to find Wasyl Dubas (now in Chicago).

At some point around this time, Jan (John) Lukasz, Marya Tkaczyk, and Peter Szkoruda (Michalʼs brother) came to Chicago and joined this growing Lonia community in America. Jan left his wife Anastasia Makolondra Lukasz behind.
In February 1910, Manka Dup, and Paul Tkaczyk came to meet their sister Marya who was living at Green Street with Frank Lukasz and Wasyl Dubas. They brought their friend Jeko Obrimbalski. Michal Sopko came alone the next month, planning to meet up with his brother-in-law Iwan Tremba.

In 1911, Michal Szkoruda returned to Lonia and brought back his sons Michal (9) and Nykola (11), as well as his teenage cousins Magda Sawicka (sister of Hrynko and Pawel) and Paska Dubas. The new destination was 644 Austin Street, where the Szkorudas, Tomasz Lewiniec, and Simon Sobeczko were now living.

In March of 1912, another wave came from Havre, France aboard the Espagne. Mikolaj Jaczyszyn left his wife behind to join his cousin (Tom Lewiniec) in America. So did Pawlo Goj and Jozef Nowak, who met up at Austin Street with their brother-in-law Simon Sobeczko. Matrina Dubas found her brother Wasyl, and Anastasia (Nascia) Malicka came to find her cousin Anna Makolondra.

18-year old Iwan (John) Makolondra and his older sister Katarzyna were also on board. Their father was Fechko (Feodor)--the father of the Hrynko (Harry) Makolondra who had come over in 1909. Iwan met up with his brother-in-law John Lukasz and Katarzyna her uncle Simon Sobeczko.

Two months later, 16-year old Wojciech Lukasz(ow) crossed over alone. He was the brother of Stefan, Frank, and John Lukasz. He would later marry Julia Makolondra, the sister of Harry, Katarzyna, Anastasia (brother Johnʼs wife), and Iwan. Wojciech and Julia had a daughter, Paravia. Wojciech seems to have left the United States, but later came back and settled in Canada.

In 1914, Peter Sobeczko and John Lukasz returned to Lonia to bring back Johnʼs wife Anastasia (leaving their young daughter Mary behind) and four teenage girls: Teofila Krzywa (cousin of Anastasia Malicka), Hanka Sawicka (sister of Magda, Pawel, and Hyrnko), Kaska Dubas (sister of Matrina and Wasyl), and 17-year old Nascia Makolondra, who it seems had the same name as her older sister Anastasia Lukasz. This younger Nascia, who later married Wasyl Turczak, was connected to the Sawickis.

Over the next ten years a few more Lonia residents came to Chicago, but nothing like this wave from 1904-1914. Pawel Sawicki ended up marrying Anna Makolondra, Peter Sobeczko married Anna Sopko, and Frank Lukasz married Mary Dubas.

Of the Makolondras, it appears that Hrynko, Katarzyna, Anastasia (elder), Iwan, Julia, and Anastasia (younger) were all siblings, the children of Feodor and Parashka Makolondra of Lonia. Anna and Tekla, daughters of Hrynko were likely cousins. The Makolondras were related and closely tied to the Lukasz(ow), Sawicki, and Sobeczko
families. The monkey wrench is that Katarzyna listed her mother as “Anna Nowak”, and Anastasia the younger listed hers as “Maryska Makolondra.” If they were full sisters of Iwan (John), their mother should have been Parashka Konaba Makolondra.

If you have information about any of these people, I'm interested. I am especially interested in the Makolondra and Lukasz families. I can't promise all of this information is 100% accurate--especially spellings. It can be hard to read the handwriting on some of the passenger lists.

Kudrence
Village: Zawalia

Thanks for the information you provided .. it has been most helpful.

A thought just flashed back that my dad was given a quarter section of free land by the Cdn. government being one reason why he immigrated. Re any documents, his house burned down years later and it is possible all documents were destroyed which I why I cannot and did not find anything in his estate after he passed away. There was absolutely no evidence of his immigration.

His homestead was in Kilkenny, Manitoba - twp. Fisher Branch which was a nearby town approx. 10 miles.

That is the spelling that your father came from Galicia. The manifests were written at the port of departure from a document that our ancestor presented to the shipping clerk. I would say 99.9% that is the spelling.
Please give me the name of a place of birth for your father.
Do read: http://www.infoukes.com/genealogy/tracz/baba.html

Please click on my name to see my posting history.
Family went to family. It is possible that some ZWARYCZs might come first to America and then go up North to Canada.
Zlatica USA

My father lived in Galicia .. believe he was Austrian or Austrian/Ukrainian. He immigrated to Canada in 1914 landing in Quebec. Quebecers at that time spoke little English & could read even less & still do. His father Johan was a prisoner of war in Russia. He did tell me when I was little and inquisitive that the family name was changed and originally had a "Z" in the beginning and ended with the same letter. All current canadian documentation shows Zwarych and sometimes Zwarich. I recall he did not like talking about himself other than he had left two older twin sisters behind. He did speak & read in Ukrainian but also spoke another language which my mother said was Austrian. My father had blonde curly hair, blue eyes, his younger brother had black curly hair & brown eyes. My dad was fair skinned and the brother was dark skinned.

I basically am still digging for the correct spelling of his name. I determined the current spelling from a ship's manifest in 1914 that arrived in Quebec from Galicia as what that country was known as. It was under control of several countries including Russia until it became known as Ukraine. I did discover that Galicia was taken over by Poland before it became under Russian control.

I do not recall there were any relatives in the U.S. so we must be from a different branch or line.

No immigration officer changed the spelling of our ancestor's surname being that the manifests were written at the port of departure. Yes, some spelling and transcribing errors did occur there. Your ancestor most likely changed the spelling so as the pronunciation would be similar to "old country".
Is your father's surname on the arrival manifest written as ZWARICH or ZWARYCZ? Technically it is all about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION when it comes to research.

If your ancestor was Ruthenian/Rusyn maybe he was Iwan/Ivan as Johann seems more German spelling.

take a listen to the surname ZWARYCZ and ZWARYCH in http://ivona.com.

About 64 ZWARYCZs came to America thru NY Ellis Island.
www.ellisislandrecords.org

ZWARYCZs in Poland:
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/zwarycz.html

Hello, I'm back after a long recess although I have continued to study the Swaczy surname and Bukaczowce, Austria. I recently went through the immigration records for every Swaczy I could locate on Ancestry and Ellis island. I looked at residences and birthplaces and for any info I could glean from each manifest. I'm convinced they are almost all related. Names of villages near Bukaczowce popped up. It takes a long time to learn the geography of this area but, I believe I have it. Now, the challence is to look for old vital or census records. Any suggestions or thoughts. The Halgal site have a village finder of sorts. When I type in Bukaczowce or any other village/town name I receive 500 server error message.

Is Bukaczowce in any late 1800-early 1900s census records? I appreciate the links you have sent especially for old maps. Great help.

Thanks.

Barbara

My surname was Zwarych and sometimes spelled as Zwarich. My mother's name was Anna. However, on doing research on my father I discovered that in fact when he immigrated to Canada the name was changed by the immigration officer from Zwarycz to Zwarych. My father who was known as John, is actually Johann .. He married my mother Anna. If you feel I can be of any help from the research I did, please contact me at the email address given. Be sure to reference the subject so I would recognize the email and that it does not end up in the spam box. Thanks.

Joseph Walter (dob 1870) & wife, Rose Essig, from Rozlucz were very likely Austrian German Catholic. The filial RC Parish was in Turka. LDS has not filmed RC Church Registers. I did check Lubaczow Diocese > AGAD (Poland) and found no copy of Turka RC Registers, although they do have a copy of GC records.

According to following map both Rozlucz and Borynia (indicated by FILLED IN BLACK CIRCLES), that Austrian German Catholics attended the Polish RC Church in Turka.
http://www.galiziengermandescendants.org/Data/galicia_map_ea...
============================================================
Lviv Historical Archives or Turka RAHS/РАЦС ????

Email Diana Pelts, Director, and ask whether they have the RC Records for Turka or might they still be in Turka District Archives. Once you ascertain where they are located, you can aways hire a local to do the research on your behalf. That is cheaper than having archives do the research for you.

Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv
3a Soborna sq., 79008 Lviv
Tel.: +380 (32) 235-45-08

E-mail: office@cdial.org.ua
Director: Pelts Diana
--------------------------------

РАЦС Турківського районного управління юстиції
пл.Ринок, 11
м.Турка
Львівська область 82500
УКРАЇНА - UKRAINE
============================
============================
Austria-Hungary was a multi-national empire created by the Ausgleich or compromise of 1867. Before 1867 the Empire had been dominated by the Austrian Germans. After defeat in the
Seven Weeks War the Germans were forced to share power with the other major group in the Empire, the Hungarians. 90% of the population of the Austrian half of the Empire was Catholic.

In the Austrian half of the Empire, the power of parliament was restricted by the fact that the government was responsible to the Emperor. He also had control of foreign affairs. The parliament was elected on a limited franchise.

The Austrians made attempts to give their subject nationalities a share in the government of their half of the empire. The peoples controlled by the Austrians were the Poles (who received better treatment than in either Russia or Germany), the Czechs, the Slovenes, the Ruthenians and the Italians.

The problem for the government was that when it introduced reforms to improve minority language or cultural rights, it drew opposition from the Germans and vice versa. This made reform very difficult. There was also a movement among many Germans that wanted to see the creation of a Greater Germany.

In 18th century Austria and Prussia were Germanic States. Germany and Austria as we know today were very different places 200 yrs ago.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/18th_century_history_of_Germany

So so true on the transcription issue! Wow I've seen some horrible outcomes with my family's documents and Spiwak only has 6 letters.

I don't know how you went with this enquiry. My maiden name is Panylyk and my father came from Malniew. He was born in 1920 to a large family - and had a sister called Parascevia (or similar in English alphabet). It won't be yours - born too late BUT it was a family name and both his father and paternal grandfather had multiple sisters. I have some church records (in Ukrainian) which I unfortunately cannot read. Happy to share.

You're welcome Christina.
I don't think its the spelling more like transcribing in USA as well as shipping clerks handwriting on some the manifests questionable.

As always you pull great information. :) Thank you!!!

I knew about the first two. Marya is my g. grandma and Rozalia her sister..

But these others I hadn't gotten around to finding yet. Got to love how no one could seem to spell the surname the same way.

Sooooo... there have been some interesting changes to my search. I have a proper spelling - LESZCZYSZN - (this is at least the spelling used on the ship manifest) and she did come from Pohorce, Austria - today's Pohirtsi, L'vivska Oblast, Ukraine...

It seems she had a sister Rozalia, a brother in law (maybe brother), Anton, and maybe a sister Anna, too.

I can't seem to find info on Anna though... but Anna was my great grandfather's second wife who was supposedly Marya's sister...

Anyone have any info on how to get documents from Pohorce/Pohirtsi, Ukraine?
