Town Lugansk (formerly 1935-1958 Voroshilovgrad) > Yekaterinoslav (Khatarineslaw* is variant transliterational spelling, but technically is one and the same as Yekaterinoslav) gubernia/region > Czarist Russia

*region named after Yekaterina Alexeevna or Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, the most renowned and longest-ruling female of Russia.

Wikipedia excerpt:
The city traces its history to 1795, when the British industrialist Charles Gascoigne founded a metal factory there. It was the beginning of an industry that still thrives there today. Luhansk achieved the status of city in 1882. Located in the Donets Basin, Luhansk was developed into an important industrial center of Eastern Europe, particularly a home to the major locomotive-building company, Luhanskteplovoz. On November 5, 1935, the city was renamed Voroshilovgrad (Russian and Ukrainian: Ворошиловград) in honour of Soviet military commander and politician Kliment Voroshilov. On March 5, 1958, with the call of Khrushchev not to give names of living people to cities, the old name was reinstated. On January 5, 1970, after Voroshilov died, the name was changed again to Voroshilovgrad. Finally, on May 4, 1990, a decree of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR gave the city back its original name.

http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/judaica/ejud_000...
===============================
Today Luhansk is regional seat > Luhanska oblast/region > Ukraine.

Family story is that he jumped ship before it came into Ellis Island. His brother Carl or Carp came with him and was a naturalized citizen.

1920 Census - Chicago 16th Ward shows:

Marcus Landfield, 82 yrs old (appx dob 1838), a widower, living as boarder in the home of the Pelcman family.
Marcus immgrated in appx 1880 from Russia. Everyone in household is listed as YIDDISH.

There is a naturalization document for Marcus LANDFIELD from Russia, dated Oct 12. 1892. Illinois.
____________________________________________________________

Passenger Manifest for SS Kaiser lists Abraham (21,watchmaker) and Josef (19) LANDFELD arriving in New York April 18,1882. They were coming from Kiew > Russia via Liverpool. *****

Passenger Manifest for the SS Toronto lists Marcus LANDFELD, 45 arriving w/family in Quebec 10/10/1882.
Departure port was Belfast. Wife was Chinga??? Could be Khanka, 38, Nathan, 16, Israel 14, Sarah???,8 and Maria, 6. It looks like they were headed for Montreal???

http://search.ancestry.ca/search/default.aspx

Abraham & Josef found under Hamburg Records.

???> I have come across someone else researching this line and they have the family coming from Rokytne > Kyivskaya gubernia/region. Today Rokytne is the county seat of the Rokytnyanskij raion > Kyivska oblast > Ukraine
____________________________________________________________

REASON FOR EMMIGRATION: MAY LAWS OF 1882.

The year 1881 was a turning point in the history of the Jews of Russia. In March 1881 revolutionaries assassinated Alexander II. Confusion reigned throughout the country. The revolutionaries called on the people to rebel. The regime was compelled to protect itself, and the Russian government found a scapegoat: the Jews.

Government-organized anti-Jewish riots (pogroms) broke out in a number of towns and shtetls of Southern Russia. These disorders consisted of looting, murder and rape. Similar pogroms were repeated in 1882, 1883, and 1884.

The govt's indifference and, at times, encouragement to the rioters shocked many Jews, especially the Maskilim (Haskalah Movement) among them. Revolutionary circles which hoped to transform these disorders into a revolt against the landowners and government also supported the rioters.

The new Czar Alexander III and his cabinet underlined these trends in their policy toward the Jews. Provincial commissions were appointed in the wake of the pogroms to investigate their causes. In the main these commissions stated that Jewish exploitation and Alexander II's liberal policies toward the Jews had caused the pogroms.

Based on this finding, the May Laws were published on May 3, 1882:

1. Jews were forbidden to settle outside the towns/shtetls.
2. Deeds of sale and lease of real estate in the name of Jews outside the towns/shtetls were canceled.
3.Jews were prohibited from trading on Sundays and Christian holidays.
=====================
The May Laws cancelled all of the exemptions which Alexander II had enacted. It limited Jewish college students to 10%. It encouraged the police to brutally enforce the new rules. Jews were systematically expelled from towns and villages where they had lived for almost a century. Although the pogroms were stopped, the threat of riots was kept alive by a virulently anti-Semitic press. Pobedonostsev, the head of the governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, formulated the objectives of Alexander III's government when he expressed the hope
that 1/3 of the Jews will convert, 1/2 will die, and 1/3 will flee the country.

At least part of his dream came to fruition. Disillusioned students left the country. Large numbers of homeless Jews left the country. From 1882 to 1920 more than 2,000,000 Jews left Russia. One small group, the Bilu, went to Palestine. The vast majority fled to the United States, England, Ireland and South Africa and Argentina.

Those who stayed remained primarily in small shtetls. At the same time, angry Jewish youth organized and joined secret revolutionary organizations. Others dreamed about a Jewish homeland. Encouraged by the writings of Leon Pinkser and his Chibbat Zion Movement, they joined Zionist groups and planned for their eventual move to Israel.

The May Laws and their aftermath did not succeed in the way that Alexander III had hoped. True, almost 1/3 of the Jewish population did leave the Russian Empire, but the remaining 2/3 became a powerful influence against Czarist Russia.

Thanks for the information!

The uncle who wrote the letter was Moska Esiavich or Mojcej Shasvich, depending on the translation. His father was Shaie or Simon.

The family was originally in Teplik and then Tirnovka. There was a brother Ben and a sister Sarah who remained in Ukraine (but may not have gone to Luhanska). Siblings Samuel, Dora, Itzik and Pessie all went to the US.

If you have any other info or tips to help me find my great grandfather I'd appreciate it.

I am searching for marriage, birth and death info on my great great grandfather Marcus L. Landfield, possibly from Ukraine, Russia, born in 1835. He was naturalized in 1892 in Chicago, IL, and had a son Abraham Landfield born in 1862 in Russia. He may have married Hanah Shutan from England who was born 1858, but she could not have been the mother of Abraham Landfield as she would only have been 4, so Marcus must have married earlier, probably in Russia. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The most of the archives is kept in secret so far, so even this organization can not get a hold on all the documents.
Often this Center is the only a thread leading to finding a lost family.
" Sixty years ago the icy winds of the Urals scratched and cut as a razor, the faces of special exiles-ethnical Germans. During everyday check-up they were not aloud to turn away their heads, or hide the nose inside the scarf. The camp director, being in good mood and distorting names of the inmates, would suddenly shout:" Who is Pliut here? You'll be Plut from now on! And we'll give you Russian name! If you are Vilhelmovich, then you'll be Vasilyevich."
Half century later a President of Luhansk Center of Civil Connections received this letter:
" I am sorry to take you away from your work, but I ask you to help me to relocate from Kazakhstan. In order to move, I need your official approval, that my father Pliut Rubin Vilhelmovich, born in 1922 in village Ilyenka, Voroshilovgrad Region, was deported in 1941 or 1942 to city Krasnoturinsk, Sverdlovsk Region. He was there about half a year, after that he was sent to Kazakhstan. In 1943 he was relocated to village Polnoch, Sverdlovsk Region, where he became disable.
We have a problem with research, because my father said that his real name was Pliut Rubin Vilhelmovich, and not one he has in his documents- Plut Roman Vasilyevich. All that because the camp Director did not like his name. From that time on our family has name Plut ( which in Russian means Gester), but our relatives have German name Pliut.
I am so hoping on your help.
I want to know the truth. May be, my father does not remember things properly. How can someone change everything, one's first, last and middle name! Even though I am fifty years old, it is hard to believe it."

It is hard to believe. One might not believe., especially while Lugansk archives do not have information about the change of name. However, there is a match: ethnic German was sent to exile to exactly Sverdlovsk Region, date of birth 's the same. Place of residence before forceful relocation-the same. Somewhere during the ten years of exile he was " Baptized" into Russian. The documents of his exile returned to Lugansk, only in 1960-s. His relatives will spend long years trying to find the lost link, that indicates the change in a name. We also changed real name in this story due the rights for privacy ."

It is not unreasonable to think that some of the family returned to ancestral village. Have you tried writing village administrator? If none of the fmaily has returned is it possible someone in the village has been in touch w/surviving family in Urals? Using Ukrainian or Russian for correspondence is ideal. Address w/latest zip code follows.

Holovi Silskoji Rady
selo Kolomijchykha
Svyativskij raion
Lohanska Oblast
UA 92625
____________________________________________________________________

DP's (Displaced People) had to fill out detail questionaires when immigrating to USA.
Those records are invaluable for researching DP's German experience and providing
personal vital info, like name of parents, mother's maiden name etc.

<The Einwanderungszentrale of Nazi Germany had the complete vital statistics of every foreigner entering into Germany (name, age, place of original, date of entry and two photos (full face and profile). Using these files, the UNNRA and IRO (replacement organization for the UNNRA) categorized, provided medical exams, X-rays, TB and VD, mental and educational exams to determine who was eligible for immigration to the US and distant ports. (Genealogist should get freedom of information form G639 from the Immigration & Nationalization Services for their records.) The INS will tell you what camps your Grandfather were in.>

above excerpt from
Displaced Persons (DP) Camp Table of Contents_
http://www.dpcamps.org/dpcamps/index.html

You will need a copy of his death certificate in order to obtain the privacy release for his documents. If family doesn't have a copy, it is easy enough to get one. Where did he die?

Death Certificate - How and where to obtain a copy in the U.S.
http://www.vitalrec.com/death.html
Hi,
I know the name Haverick is a shortened version of Hauterevich according to my father. I believe Frank Haverick was also my great grandfather. My grandmother was Mary Haverick-Eddy, born in 1910, passed away in 1999 in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Hope this helps.

If you are sure it is Beloe, Luhanska, then you can e-mail detailed information of your research to this organization in Lugansk, that has access to the archives and helps people to find their lost family "Center of Civil Connections" cos@pol03.gts.lg.ua
If you want, you can send it to me first for translation and I'll address it to them, or both.
The more details, the better. Good luck.
I'll send you some research stories that were performed in this Center on German families. It'll help you to see what German were going through in USSR.
The plant still exists.
http://ur7iwz.qrz.ru/map/ua/m_37_127.jpg
Map of Beloe and Lutugino.
Town Beloe is not by Black sea. On Black Sea German settlements were in Krimea area. During WWII about 70 000 of them were send to Stavropol Region, Rostov Region, then to Siberia and Kazakhstan, and Omsk Region. Many years later some of them returned, now in Krimea there is only about 3500 of Russian Germans. Could it be that your ancestor came out of German settlement, and settled in Beloe, Luhansk Region?
