I just transliterated GGrandfather's surname, Tchernegovski/Tchernigovsky = Черниговскый (in Russian), and realized that this is a surname rooted in geography. The surname is taken from town name, Chernigov (to date still the regional seat - today called Chernihiv > Ukraine) in appx 1836. Chernigov would have likely been the birthplace of the founder of the dynasty. The surname translates to PERSON FROM CHERNIGOV.

Historically, Jews did not have permanent family surnames at all. Within the Jewish community, patronymics were used, such as David ben (son of) Joseph or Miriam bat (daughter of) Aaron. Names in that form are still used in synagogue and in Jewish legal documents.

Surnames are a relatively new phenomenon among Ashkenazim (East European) Jews. Jews are a people whose calendar is nearly 6,000 years old, but surnames were mandated for Russian Jews only in the 19th century, less than two hundred years ago.

In the Russian Pale of Settlement, Jews were required to take formal surnames at various times in different places. Czar Alexander I unsuccessfully mandated that Jews adopt surnames in 1804. However, it was not until 1836 that all Russian Jews had surnames. By 1844, they were compelled to enter their names in a public register.
============================================================
Geopolitics+
http://www.zum.de/whkmla/region/russia/xgovchernigov.html

CHERNIGOV:
A city in Russia; capital of the government of the same name. The Jewish settlement at Chernigov is one of the oldest of the Ukraine. In the thirteenth century a rabbi, Isaac (Itze) of Chernigov, is mentioned, who spoke the Russian language. (Harkavy,"Yevrei i Slavyanskie Yazyky," p. 11). In 1623 King Ladislaus banished the Jews from the "voyevodstvos" (military districts) of Chernigov and Syeversk. The cause was probably jealousy on the part of the Christian merchants and tradesmen; the edict declaring that the Jews caused great damage to their business. However, soon after 1623 the Jews again came to Chernigov. In 1648, at the time of Khmielnicki's revolt, the whole Jewish population of Chernigov was exterminated by the Cossacks.

In the later histories of Chernigov indications are found of the hostility of the people toward the Jews. Thus, in 1665 the noblemen of Chernigov sent an embassy to the Council of Warsaw, mentioning in their instructions that justice called for the expulsion of the dishonest Jews from the country, or at least for the imposition of a Jewish poll-tax.

According to the census of 1897 there were in the town of Chernigov about 11,000 Jews in a total population of 27,006. The chief occupations of the Jews are industrial and commercial. In the neighborhood many tobacco plantations and fruit-gardens are owned by Jews. There are in Chernigov 1,321 Jewish artisans, including 404 tailors and seamstresses, but the demand for artisan labor is limited to the town. There are 69 Jewish day-laborers, almost exclusively teamsters. But few are engaged in the factories.

The small charitable institutions of Chernigov were combined, in 1899, in the Committee of Relief for the Jewish Poor; but the different trade groups of the Jewish population have their own charitable institutions also. Thus the bakers, storekeepers, teamsters, tailors, and "melammedim" (teachers of Hebrew) have separate funds from which loans without interest, and, in cases of necessity, gratuitous help, are obtained.

The Jewish educational establishments include a Talmud Torah (115 pupils); a primary school for boys (40 pupils); a private school for girls (57 pupils); and there are 45
ḥadarim, where about 450 boys and 70 girls are taught Hebrew.
Bibliography:
Regesty i Nadpisi, i. 403, 404, 466;
Budushchnost, 1900, No. 42.
Jewish Encyclopedia 1906

Chernigov
http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/judaica/ejud_000...

http://www.zum.de/whkmla/region/russia/xgovchernigov.html

http://www.bloodandfrogs.com/2011/03/jewish-genealogy-basics...

http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Ethnic-Jewish...

Once you complete your inquiry in Kirovograd and come to a wall, I would suggest moving your inquiry to Chernihiv.
Wooow, Mighthelp. Thanks again tremendously for that info. I have now joined JewishGen. Its going to be interesting to see where this journey takes me.
There has always been a feeling of "the other" about my Ukraine great grand father. His customs, way of living and experiences seem so strange, other worldly and even shocking.
My family is mainly Anglo-Celtic in background but here is this wonderfully strange ingredient that has given me both my names and I suspect gives that side of our family a mystical, brooding, interior and art-creative expression.
Ivan

You are right. Historical perspective is very important. It confirms the person and the circumstance.

There are Jewish records available thru archival inquiry. Some look to be in State Archive of Kirovograd oblast and others are at RAHS (comparable to district level).

Kirivograd State Archive does have Jewish birth records for following time frames: 1831, 1853, 1855-56, 1858-1863, 1866-1880, 1882-1919. If the dates you need are available,
you can confirm that he was actually born there. Many Jews living in the Southern Tsarist Empire were migrants from Mogilev and Grodno gubernias, today's Belarus.

State Archives of Kirovohrad Oblast
3, Academician KoroliovStr.
Excerpt from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirovohrad

On Wednesday, April 27, 1881, there was a pogrom against the Jewish citizens of Elisavetgrad.A religious dispute at an inn served as fuel for the riot. The attack focused at first on the systematic destruction of Jewish shops and warehouses. The Jewish citizens tried to protect their businesses, but this only led to more outrage. The soldiers joined in the rioting rather than protecting the innocent. After two days of attacks, many were killed, 500 houses and 100 shops were demolished and approximately 2,000,000 rubles' worth of property was stolen or destroyed. This would not be the only pogrom against the Jewish population of Elisavetgrad. In 1905 another riot flared killing Jews and again plundering the Jewish quarter. A contemporary account of the 1905 pogrom was reported in the NY Times December 13, 1905.

Elizabethgrad was ravished by famine in 1901 which was made worse by poor government response. The region itself is extremely fertile. However, a drought in 1892 and poor farming methods which never allowed the soil to recover, prompted a large famine that plagued the region. According to a 1901 NY Times article, the Ministry of the Interior denied that the persistence of famine in the region and blocked non-State charities from bringing aid to the area. In the opinion of the NY Times author, "The existence of famine was inconvenient at a time when negotiations were pending for foreign loans." The Governor of the Kherson region, Prince Oblonsky, refused to acknowledge this famine. Nevertheless, one non-resident and non-State worker was able to gain access to Elizabethgrad and could provide the NY Times with an eye-witness account.

New York Times Article referred to in above
http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?_r=2&res=9...

http://grossmanproject.net/pogroms.htm

Hi folks. I am researching the ancestry profile of my great grand father, Ivan as above. His father was Jerston and his mother was Menica nee Bacinov. I believe they were wealthy cattle dealers. All was shattered in the mid 1880s (approximate guess) when Ivan's entire family were pogrom slaughtered. He fled to London and eventually New Zealand where he refused to speak of his terrible experiences again. He did it seems have one friend back in Elizabethgrad in 1908. That was Dr Manual Linetsky, Uspensky St, Elisabethgrad, South Russia.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who thinks they maybe able to help or who is related to Ivan or knows anything about his ancestors. I have hit a brick wall in researching further back than Ivan.
Thanks for listening. Ivan Joseph Tchernegovski (Melbourne, Australia)

Hi Andrea. I am sorry I cannot help you but I am interested in your endeavours to find out about the pogroms of Elizabethgrad that my great grand father (Ivan Jacob Tchernegovski (1870 - 1942) was also caught up in. According to my aunt (his grand child) he refused ever to talk about his terrible despicable experience. All his family in Elizabethgrad were wiped out. He eventually settled in New Zealand as far away from his past as he could. I know he had a friend (Dr Manual Linetsky, Uspensky St, Elisabethgrad) in 1908 who was trying to contact him in Australia.

Hi Katia
I am doing research on our family tree. My mother is Liliana Brozky and her father my grandfather is Natalio Ruben Brozky. His father my great grandfather was Mauricio Brozky and he was born in Ukraine in 1898 but immigrated to Argentina. His father (my great great grandfather) on his marriage certificate is Leon Brozky from Russia. My mother said that my grandfather Natalio Ruben (who passed away a few months ago in Australia) always talked about my great grandfather (his father) Mauricio belonging to the Sugar dynasty from Ukraine but having to leave Europe with his mother (Rosa Kuperman) due to being an illegitimate son however he kept the name Brozky. His name was changed to Brozky it seems from Bodzky in Argentina. I think Leon Brodsky or Brozky is the same Leon Brodsky that is my mother's great grandfather and my great great grandfather. Do you have any photos of Leon or his daughters or your father you could show me and I can send you a photo of my great grandfather Maurico who died in 1960 and had 3 daughters and one son (my grandfather).

I would like some help too. I am Brode, my great-grandfather was Marcus Brodsky from Melitopal Russia (near Odessa). He, and his five sons soon after the pogroms went to Hailar China before coming to Vancouver. The sons of Marcus were: Jack, Norman, Henry and Leonard. My grandfather Henry was born in 1902 in Melitopal as were his brothers. They all immigrated to Detroit in 1919 where many of us still remain. The last Brodsky to my knowledge was Marcus - the other brothers all changed it to Brode. Before Henry died in 1990 we did a documentary on his life. He was 88 and a bit senile so it's hard to hear exact details. From what I can glean, his father Marcus was in the uniform manufacturing business in Russia - for the Russian army. He was married to Hanna Zinkovski (sp?) I wonder if anyone can help me with some lineage.

Alexander Semenovich GUMBERG was a family friend of my Elizavetgrad ancestors. He was b. 26 June 1886, Elizavetgrad to a rabbi. Immigrated to US 1903; married Emma Frances “Frankie” ADAMS (b. 1893, CA), 27 May 1919. She died in 1969, using her maiden name of ADAMS. Alex became a famous guy, and some historians demonstrate, a spy for the Soviets.

He had a brother Zhenya GUMBERG

His oldest Brother was Capt. Veniamin GUMBERG (b. bef. 1886) Menshevik revolutionary anticommunist, sent to work camp 1930.

His youngest bro: Sergei “Zarin” GUMBERG – Bolshevik. postal minister.

I'd love to see you GOMBERG photos, which may match some of my unidentified Elizavetgrad photos.
I think I may be able to help you and probably am related to you. I am Ida Mollov's grandaughter. Her married name was Ida Krampf. I found a reference to Morris on the passenger list for my great grandfather, Sam Mollov whose original name was Chia Mogilewsky. Chia arrived in New York (from Belgium) on October 2, 1905. From the record, it looks like he was briefly detained to wait on his brother Moishe (Morris) who was already living in New York. He (Sam) had left behind in Russia his pregnant wife Rochel (Rose Mollov) and his daughter Ida. Rochel gave birth to their second daughter Molly who was born January 9, 1906 in Russia before travelling to New York with the girls to join Sam.

My mother Corinne, apparently your second cousin, remembers that Morris was a tailor who owned a tailor shop in Far Rockaway. She remembers visiting her Great Uncle Morris there when she was a child. I am curious where you live and who's child you are.

I already folded some of your info into the Miller Family Tree that I am building. Thanks to you I now know where my Great Grandfather Sam Mollov was from (I assume he too was from Elizabethgrad originally.) I would be happy to share with you anything I have found on our family. Ironically, I joined Ancestry.com to learn about the other side of the family, my father's side.

Looking forward to hearing back from you :)

Gabriel,

My name is Masha Brodsky and I saw your threads here and interested in your book and family tree. I come from the branch of the sugar Brodskys that did not leave Russia until 1990s, and many people died during the war and we lost most of the info. My grandfather, Anatol (Naftali) Brodsky is the son of Moisej (Moshe) and grandson of Leib (Lev) Shmuil Brodsky, who was working with the family at the Zlatopol and Kiev sugar factories. He doesn't know which son of Israel we come from (although there was some talk of the oldest son), but his grandfather told him about coming from Shor-Brodskys.
Do you have any information on branches that were left in Russia (probably just us)?
Please email me at ormasha@hotmail.com, i'd love to read what you wrote about the family.
Best,
Masha

Thank you so much, Katia. Useful new info. Obviously we are of the same mispocha, and not far removed. Although you are 28 years younger than I, you are one generation closer to Lazar. My birth date is 1933. My father: Gregory < grandfather: Alexander < gr grandfather: Joseph, who was one of Leon's brothers. That's three generations back to Leon. Ages explain the generational difference: Leon was born 1857. So he was 52 yrs old when your father Vladimir was born; and your father was 52 when you were born. That's only two generations back to Leon. I am occasionally in touch with the author of "From Eminence to Exile," my 1st cousin. Like your Aunt Vera, her father Joseph (my uncle) was Belgian, having fled the Bolshevik regime. (See her first book, "Smoke Signals").
Ray,

Yes I have all of these from the discussions the Bonoff group has had. I mainly posted here to try and see if there was a connection between Rebecca and any of the Krassnov's discussed on this Board. It is good to get that information out on a public Board though. You never know if someone will find a connection to it. Thanks for adding the info.

Incidently I believe the consensus of the Bonoff group was that the Chaya who married Jacob Berland was actually daughter of Arons brother Pesche. Some of us believe that Aron's Chaya is Sarah who married Walton.

John

My elderly mother of 90 years of age has not heard from her sister for about 12 years. I recently sent a registered letter in August but it was returned yesterday, with unknown checked off in the box. My aunt has lived there forever and I believe that she has passed away or in a nursing facility and would like to find her. We live in Canada. Would like to know of any resources to find a record of death. Thanks.

Thanks for your response. Yes, I would like any contact information you have on Dubensky and Zolotarev families in Kirovograd.
The letters should actually be written in Ukrainian, perferably in Russian. If you type the letter in English, I am sure they will hire or get a friend to read it for them. If you do not hear from the Verbitsky, let me know, as there are quite a few of them. Please get in touch with me, if you have any success. Good luck!
----------------------
Address in Ukrainian, for Poberetsky Valery, son of Ivan (John), born 1950

Поберецький Валерий Іванович
Попова 11 – 3 - 106
Кіровоград, місто
Кіровоградська область
Україна 25000
UKRAINE
----------------------
Address in Ukrainian for Dashevsky Ruslan, son of Fedor (Fredrick), born 1978

Дашевський Руслан Федорович
Правди 70А – 4 - 0
Кіровоград, місто
Кіровоградська область
Україна 25000
UKRAINE
----------------------
Address in Ukrainian for Dashevsky Vladimir (Walter), son of Hryhorii (George), born 1938

Дашевський Владимир Григорьевич
Комарова 19 – 0 - 16
Кіровоград, місто
Кіровоградська область
Україна 25000
UKRAINE
----------------------
Address in Ukrainian for Verbitsky Andrei (Andrew), son of Mykhailo (Michael), born 1936

Вербицький Андрей Михайлович
Пайаєва 5 – 3 - 83
Кіровоград, місто
Кіровоградська область
Україна 25000
UKRAINE
----------------------
Address in Ukrainian for Verbitsky Vladimir, son of Ruvin, born 1939

Вербицький Владимир Рувинович
Яновського 96 – 0 – 82
Кіровоград, місто
Кіровоградська область
Україна 25000
UKRAINE
----------------------
Alina, Have you made you visit to E-grad yet? Hope you found some things.
If you run across any Poberjesky / Poberezhsky, Tsibulvesky, Dashevsky, Verbitsky there (esp. the Poberjesky and Tsibulevsky) I'd be very interested. It'd be cool if you could take as many good photos of the Jewish cemetery as possible to post to JewishGen and flickr. Good luck!
Ray Cannata
