Maybe I can help, if we are indeed relatives. I am the grandson of Sophie Yaffe (maiden name Bernstein). Sophie may be the daughter of Anna Bommelman and Harris Gershko Bernstein. Sophie I believe was born in London (Reading) around 1905 or so. She married Maurice (Morris or Abram) of Liverpool.

I have seen 2 pictures posted on Ancestry by SKBERNS. I assume that is a Bernstein. I have the same picture of the woman SKBERNS posted, in a photo album my mother made for me. So we both have the same photograph, which is more than coincidental. My email is glenn_jaffe@yahoo.com. Morris Yaffe name was changed to Jaffe sometime in the early 1900s.

This is very interesting. I have a great-grandmother with the surname "Gular/Guler" - Freida Gular - but I do not know what the actual spelling was before her family came to America, or if it was just shortened. On some documents, because of handwriting, or transcription, it looks like "Guber." When I do a google search on the name Gular, or Guler, it mostly comes up with other regions, or countries, like India. I do not know where she was from before she married my great-grandfather. On most documents she lists Russia - Kiev. On one I found Galicia, on another, Volhynia (?). When her older son came over, he listed being from Zashkov and that his mother was still there, in Zashkov (Zhashkov, Zashkiv, Zhashkiv). That was in 1913. His name was Velvel Chudnovsky - Chudnowsky - Czudnowski, etc., (b. 1895). He used the later changed his name to William, but, I also found documents with the name Walker/Walko. He eventually shortened his last name to Chud. When she, Freida, cMame over with her younger son, Sacha/Tsacha/Tacha, changed to Samuel (b. 1905), it was eight years later, 1921, and she put that they last lived in Bucharest, Roumania.

The part I find so interesting, is, I have suspected that her maiden name may have actually been closer to Guber, later changed by brothers of hers when they came here, and, she also married a Chudnovsky/Chudnowsky/Chudnovski/Chudnowski/Tchoudnovski. My great-grandfather's name was Yona/Yonah Chudnovsky. My grandfather, Samuel (Sacha), who only shortened his name to Chudnow, told my father that they were from Chudnov, which is near Zhitomir, and Kiev. His brother, William, told his daughter that they were from Zashkov. Since many documents only have "Russia" or "Kiev, Russia," it makes it hard to know for sure if they ever lived in Chudnov. It is also hard, because long before the Nazi invasion, the Bolsheviks raided and destroyed Chudnov, and many other villages/towns/shetls, as well as any records, and even the cemeteries/gravestones.

Yonah and Freida also had a daughter, Claje, later changed to Clara. She married Alexander Kooperman/Cooperman.

I have come to realize that the name Chudnovsky, and all of it's variations/spellings, is about as common as Swansons and Johnsens on the other side of my family! When I was growing up I never met any other Chudnows. In doing my research, I've found so many Chudnows, it's overwhelming, as supposedly the name originated in the town of Chudnov, and that doesn't necessarily mean they are all related.

Anyway, I wonder if we could be related? Many of my Gular and Chudnow family members settled in upstate New York, possibly Massachusettes, Pennsylvania, possibly Michigan, and definitely Chicago, which is where I was born.

Miriam Wiener has copies of some of the records she researched @Kamenets Podilskiy Archives, but she's not releasing them, except to clients. Her services are expensive, but for this specific area, she is the go-to person.

AND THERE ARE NO LISTS, except for maybe the kahal lists (if they weren't completely destroyed). You could try an inquiry at Khmelnytska oblast archives on own. Available dates: 1835; 1838-1874; 1843; 1856; 1859; 1865; 1865-1917; 1875-1918 (FOND 249); 1884; 1891; 1894-1895; 1900-1907; 1904-1916; 1906-1917; 1908; 1914

Even before the fire there were no birth records for 1835 (GGrandfather's appx dob) K-Podilskij. ???Dates that might be available: 1840; 1842-1843; 1845-1847; 1852-1854; 1856-1857; 1859-1862; 1864- 1865; 1871; 1875; 1877-1900; 1883-1917 (FOND 249); 1904; 1913-1915
----------------------------------------
Does family history have GGrandfather emigrating from someplace else before settling in K-Podilskij? Many Jews in this area were from one of the Czarist Russian northern gubernias/region, today Belarus, Poland and the Baltics. The Pale of Settlement created a migratory Russian Jewish population.
==================
You're welcome. Good Luck!
Where EXACTLY was he born? I can check the place name for surnames. Anyone will tell you that census records are the least accurate of all documentation that you will find. There is a reason why it is suggested that researchers are told to find three pieces of documentation per family member being researched.

BTW I think you are building a barrier for yourself that might not have to be there.

Could it be that the surname wasn't Russian, because it was Ukrainian or Belarusyn. At the turn of the previous century, when the Great Migration took place, both Ukrainians and Belarusyn immigrants would have been listed as Russian, because technically AT THAT TIME they were Russian citizens, but ethnically they either Ukrainian or Belarusyn.

Surname Small/Smal = Смаль in Ukrainian.

Today there are 4,750+ people living in Ukraine with this surname. Many are from what was once the old Vohlynian region > Czarist Russia, and the rest are spread throughout Ukraine.

This surname is derived from Eastern Slavic word TO BURN. Sergej's original ancestor with this surname could have been a fireman (person who burned forests) or a blacksmith. He could have also been someone that was engaged in mining tar.
-------------------------------------------
Why did you assume that the surname was shortened from another surname??? The name may have been altered because of transliteration (sounds-like) from original language using Cyrillic Alphabet into a language using Romanized Alphabet, but the surname is legitimate as is.

I have also encountered this surname in what is Belarus today.
----------------------------------------------

I did find a Sergiej Smal in Ellis Island Records. He was heading to his uncle's in Perth Amboy and he was emigrating from ???Bohorodgera > Russia.

My great-grandparents were from Kamenets, but I cannot find anything else. My great-grandfather's name was Buroch BEITELMANN (later changed to Benjamin Bettelman). I was told his original name was DARHOLT, but was adopted by the BEITELMANN family. He married either Ida or Baila KOOPER. They immigrated to Baltimore about 1900. Their children: Brane (Bertha)was either a daughter or daughter-in-law and married Hyman WASHINSKY (later changed to Waskins), Morris married Rose GETTELMAN, Nachman (Nathan) married Rose BROZER and Esther married Charles DINOWITZER after immigrating; Feige (Fannie) married Morris SCHREIBMAN (Schreiber) and Riwke (Rebecca) married David STULMAN prior to immigrating. I would also like to find out something about Morris SCHREIBMAN's parents and siblings. Any information would be appreciated.

Venezuela did not accept immigrants w/WW2 DP (Displaced People) status until 1948. The IRO written policy was not completed until December 1946. On paper Venezuela agreed to accept 4,000 WW2 Refugees.
======================
Exact place of origin is key to your research. Your Immigrant Ancestor/s could have originated from the ancient city, founded in the 11th century, or from one of the many 40/50 villages in the region??? Immigrants frequently referred to their district centers as place of origin for geographic reference, because their villages might have been small. Today the city has a population of appx 98,000+.

Chances are emigration took place via Post WW2 Germany.

Contact the Bad Arolsen Archives. There are appx 16 miles of shelving w/DP documentation in 6 buildings that is currently being digitized and started to become available in the Spring of 2008.

These archives in Germany will provide you w/details of his/her exact experience during WW2 and other personal details such as EXACT PLACE OF BIRTH. Inquiry by immediate family is available for free. All you need to provide is the full name and any other spelling variants and his/her exact birth date or as exact as you have it. If family member immigrated as married couple you can make an inquiry for both at same time.

Your inquiry can be done by e-mail. The archives have upgraded their service and response can be received via e-mail as well. Response can take as little as three days or as much as three months.

Upon accessing site click HUMANITARIAN REQUESTS. Follow instructions.
www.its-arolsen.org/

Another link of interest might be following:
http://dpcamps.org/

-----------------------------------------------

Once you get a response, we can then proceed to look for surviving family in Ukraine.

Based on the surnames, can I assume that religion was Russian Orthodox???
Hi I know this is a long shot, but I am looking for my father's relatives, if any are still alive or if anyone knows any info on them. My father was Wasil (or Basil) Suslow son of Feodosia Ivanenko and Stepan (stephan)Suslow. He was allegedly born in Kamentz Podolsk Ukraine around 1915-1920. He once mentioned his grandfather may have been called Nikolai Ivanenko, but we are not sure of this. We have absolutely no other information on this side of the family.

Yes, I would be interested in addresses. The Cyrillic is the way it is spelled in Russian in my documents. You found alot more than I did. I wonder if this is one of those people. I attached the envelope. That is how I found an alternate spelling of the village name. thank-you. I appreciate that. Is Russian or Ukrainian the language spoken in that area. I do not speak either, but I take advantage of Google Translate program. I know that English is usually not spoken.

My great-grandfather, Gabriel Tabelski, was born on March 18, 1894 in Pidpylypia or Podfilipie. As a young man, he left what is now the Ukraine, arriving at the port of Halifax, Canada, in March 1911. He spent more than five years in Canada before crossing the border into the USA in December 1916. He lived the rest of his life with his family in Buffalo, New York, dying in 1977.

Does anyone know if there may be any records about the Tabelski family in Pidpylypia? The little town is in the Kamenets-Podilskij district of the Khmelnytska region. On later documents, Gabriel identified his father as “Vasil,” “Vasilly,” or “John.” He was Roman Catholic.

Thank you!
I am writting because the name Tracz sounds familiar to me. I have been searching the genealogy web sites for a few years looking for my family. My maiden name is Nagach but my grandmother was a Bondaruk. I saw this name when I looked on the Ellis Island list of immigrants. My grandfather came to the USA in 1910 from Chizhevka, Khmelnytskyy Ukraine. He came with my grandmother's brother Stepan Bondaruk. In February of 1912 a man whose name was Stepan Dracz came to the USA and he was going to his cousins house Stepan Bondaruk who lived in Peoria Illinois. I do not know if the surname Dracz and Tracz could be the same one? My grandfather said the he was from the Volyn which is now Khmelnytskyy oblast. I know this because I did get in touch with my family from our family village.
Hope you find what you are looking for.
Collene

Hi Marianne, my great Grandmother was Sophia Trager, sister of Misha (Moshe). He first came to Australia (via Manchuria - Harbin) somewhere around 1903, to Brisbane QLD, with his parents, Cholem Solomon Trager & Sarah Ulitsky, and siblings, Sophia, Olga Ella, Samuel, & Rosa. My great Gandfather, Abraham Broslovsky married Sophia Trager and there's the connection. I think you'll find that you have lots of relatives in Australia. Contact me if you want more information. Regards Antony

A fire destroyed a massive amount of Jewish and civil records stored in a warehouse of the archives in Kamenets Podolsky in 2003. Five of the most valuable fonds (record groups) were destroyed including fonds: 112, 226, 228, 249 and 678. Among the very valuable documents destroyed were the revision lists (lists of inhabitants) dating back into the 1700s. All surviving historic documents from this archive have been transferred to the Khmelnitskiy Oblast Archives.

State Archive of Khmelnitsky oblast
Grushevskogo Str., 99.
Khmelnitsky 29000
Ukraine

Contact phones: +380-382-76-47-39, +380-382-79-73-56, +380-382-79-55-52, +380-382-79-72-96.
E-mail: inf_dahmo@hm.ukrtel.net Slobodynuk@hm.ukrtel.net

I'm note sure of my facts, but here is a possible connection between Tahker and Mehlman.

My grandfather, Samuel Mailman, emmigrated to the US around 1914. He told us he hailed from Kamanetz Padolsk. The spelling of his last name may have been altered upon entering the US, although he always insisted that it was spelled MAILMAN. However, the only surname spelling that I have found similar to MAILMAN with any relationship to Kamenetz Padolsk is Mehlman, so I assume it was changed at Ellis. His Mother's Maden name was Chana Tashker. She was married to Dov Behr Mehlman (Mailman). Sam settled in Elizabeth, NJ., married Rose Black, and had 4 children, Seymour, Barbara, Arnold (my father), and Carol. I know that Sam had siblings that remained in Russia and his mother, Chana Tashker, had 7 siblings as well. Sam had a brother who came to the United States, but soon after, returned to the old country. Does any of this info strike a chord?

Are you still looking for Roman Hnatiuk's origins and family? The key to research in Ukraine is EXACT place of birth.

In order to obtain detailed history of Father's WW2 experience, contact the Bad Arolsen Archives. Germans kept excellent records of everyone that set foot in Germany during WW2. These recently opened archives will provide you w/his exact experience in Germany and other personal data like EXACT PLACE OF BIRTH. Inquiry by immediate family is available for free. All you need is to provide full name and any other spelling variants and exact birth date. You can actually perform inquiries for husband and wife at same time. Do not provide more info than names and birth dates. Your inquiry can be done by e-mail. I understand the archives have upgraded their svce and response can be received via e-mail as well. Response can take as much as three months or as little as several days.

Upon accessing site click HUMANITARIAN REQUESTS. Follow instructions.
www.its-arolsen.org/

Post WW2 this family had DISPLACED PERSON (DP) status.
Displaced Persons' (DP) Camps Table of Contents
www.dpcamps.org/
______________________________

I'm not researching this surname, but I did come across a death certificate for Josephine Rusin who listed her father as Felix Medynski.

She died Aug 31, 1908 in N. Braddock Twp, Allegheny Co., PA. She was about 58 years old.

It indicated she and her father were born in Russian Poland. The mother is listed as unknown.

The informant was listed as Frank Rusin.

My g-grandparents were Frank and Josephine Rusin, but they lived in Fayette Co. PA. Frank died in 1914 and Josephine in 1930. I do not know if there is a relation to this Josephine, but I wanted to share the info I had that mentioned the Medynski surname.

Samuel Mailman's father's name was Dov Behr. He was married to Chana Tashker. Does anyone know the names of Chana Tashker's siblings?

My ancestors also came from Novaya Ushitsa. My grandfather's name was Zelman Miron Wolfovich Bikman and my grandmother's name was Leah Wolfova Bikman (nee Rosenblum or Rosenblit or Rosenblatt). They left before WWI and came to Canada.

Perhaps we can share information to see if there is a connection? Other surnames are Marshtein & Zaltzman.
