There is one Sigal(l) = Сигал listed in the Kharkov telephone Drectory. I could not find any Shabelny, although there are a bunch of variants of the surname, which means SWORD CARRIER. Consider writing a letter in English and copy address as is below. Make it simple, allowing for an easier translation. This could be a surviving relative. You have nothing to lose.

Сигал Н С.
ул. Фесенковская, 12/11
г.
Genealogical search

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,

I would contact you because I am looking for information about members of my family: Vera Illarionov and her sister Maria Illarionov , and their parents Count Nicholas Illarionov and Countess Natalia Peresviat-Soltan.

These are the items I have so far:

-Vera and Maria are the daughters of Count Nicholas Illarionov and Countess Natalia Peresviat-Soltan.

-They were born in the late nineteenth century in Kharkov.

-Maria has studied in Paris, where she met Jean Navello (from Nice), with whom she had a daughter: Evlania. Evlania was born in Kharkov 12 February 1915.

-Evlania is my grandmother. She later called Jeanne.

-They have all of two, with the small Evlania, abruptly left Kharkov and arrived in Nice.

-Vera married Count Anatole Alec Buxhoeveden in Nice in 1932 and then went to live in New York. They divorced in 1956. She should be part of the Russian Nobility Association in America (which she organized the annual ball in May 1941 in New York).

-Maria has lived with my grandmother and my grandfather between Nice and the Alpes de Haute-Provence.

Unfortunately I have no further information of dates, places.
I have no information on the Count Illarionov and his wife Countess Peresviat-Soltan.
Who were they? Where did they live? Did they die when their daughter had to leave Kharkov? Under what conditions the girls have left Kharkov?
I have no information either about the life of Vera in New York.

I sincerely hope you can give me some information or some more resources to try to trace the lives of these two women and their parents.

Thank you very much,

Sincerely,

Lucia Machemin

Lost Family of Slava Pavlovsky / Слава Павловский

Slava Pavlovsky (Russian: Слава Павловский) was the grandmother of my cousin. She was born in Izium (Ukrainian: Ізюм) which is now located in Ukraine.

During World War 2, Slava Pavlovsky (Слава Павловский) was displaced and ended up in a refugee camp in Germany. At the end of the war, she could not reconnect with her family because they had all been seperated and displaced. Slava Pavlovsky (Слава Павловский) travelled through Switzerland to Italy, and boarded a refugee ship called the Skaugum. she arrived in Australia on May 12th 1950.

Slava Pavlovsky (Слава Павловский) passed away on May in 2010. All that is known is that her mother was Polish and her father was Russian. She was born in Izium and had approximately 1 brothers and 2 sisters or 1 brother and 1 sister. Slava disliked to talk about it due to it being deeply emotional for her.

Please, Any information regarding Slava Pavlovsky's family (OR any of the Pavlovsky family) would be greatly appreciated by her surviving family in Australia.

Thankyou,
Samuel

Re: Looking for Stolarenko / Tatarko Family in Lozovo/Lozovaya

Both Stolyarenko (closer transliteation to original surname, equivalent to CARPENTER in English) and Tatarko (means SMALL - reference to stature - TARTAR) can be found in both Kharkiv, the regional capital, and in the county seat Lozova (population appx 70,000). There is also a village called Lozova in Borivskij raion/county > Kharkivska oblast/region ? Was the family from a fair size railroad town or from a rural village in Borivskij raion/county > Kharkiv region? ? Stolyarenko is by far the more common surname.

The surname Tatarko indicates some influence of micro-ethnic Tartar group in bloodline. Google UKRAINIAN TARTAR and you will find loads of info.

____________________________________________________________

I doubt that the family volunteered as Ostarbeiter /Forced Laborers, unless they did it early on in WW2??? I suspect that they were forcefully taken by the Nazis. This is not written in stone. I am only guessing.

The Germans kept meticulous records of anyone, who stepped foot in their country. You can obtain the entire family history in Germany during and post war by making an inquiry at Bad Arolsen Archives. These archives will provide you w/details of exact experience in Germany and other personal details like EXACT place of origin, names of parents, etc. Inquiry by immediate family is available for free. Make the inquiry in Mother-in-law's name. All you need to provide is her parents' full names and any other spelling variants, and their exact birth dates, or as exact as she has it. Do not provide more info than that !!! You want them to locate any and all records possible.

Your inquiry can be done by e-mail. I understand the archives has upgraded their service and response can be received via e-mail as well. Response can take as
little as three days or as much as three months.

Upon accessing site click HUMANITARIAN REQUESTS. Follow instructions.
http://www.its-arolsen.org/en/homepage/index.html
____________________________________________________________________________

Displaced Persons' (DP) Camps Post WW2
http://www.dpcamps.org/
____________________________________________________________________________

Whenever doing this kind of research, you really want to retrace the exact steps back. So Germany first and then you will move your research to Kharkivska oblast > Ukraine.

I did find appx 20 Stolyarenko and 14 Tatarko in Lozova, the county seat. BUT I am sure Olena does not want to acquire family that might not be her own, so everything has to be done to ascertain as much info as possible.

When you get a response, feel free to e-mail me and then I can point you to the next step of your research.

Hello, Thank you so much for your reply. We are trying to find my mother's family. She and I are the only living relatives left here in the USA. Her Grandmother, Alexandra Hluschenko born around 1896 in Kharkiv Married Iwan Stschoholiw born around 1896 in Kharkiv and they had 3 or 4 children - Iwan, Anatoly, Vana and Valentina. My mother's father is Anatoly. We can't find anything on either the Hluschenko's or the Stschoholiw's. All of her paternal family was born in Kharkiv.
Tamara

I am looking for further information on her and our Vashek family members. She married Rudolf Vosmera in about 1908. Unfortunately I do not speak or read German or Czech.
So does that mean you are still in Kharkov? Is your family still practicing Judaism?

Well... very interesting... this is what my father writes:

I do not know the exact chain of relation but my father (Ben Berkun) had said they were cousins. Two brothers had a Nehi Bottling plant in Bridgeport, CT which was taken from them when 7UP New York wanted the territory. One son was a Rabbi in Pittsburg (Alvin Berkun) for many years. Recently he was head of the Rabinnical Assembly. Look him up. I have his card somewhere and he sends me regards from time to time from a convention. He may have a son who is a Rabbi. I visited the Bridgeport Soda plant many years ago, it was much smaller than ours. We've had no contact with them over the years.

Hi,
My father's family came from Uman. My grandfather's name was also Benjamin(Benya)Berkun, but he was very religious, and he and other men prayed at home. When WWII started, the family was evacuated to Sibiria; after the war, they came to Kharkov, they had 11 children, my father was the last one. They never were Gymnastics or some sort of Athletic trainers. One of my father's brother, the older ones, went to America in 1900s, married, with 2 children-one became a Dr.and another is the modern rabbi. They live in Bridgeport.
So, at this point, I don't know if we related or not.

I am looking for any information about my grandmother (Dora Berkovna Offengendin (maiden name Leikind) and her mother Polina Borisovna Miloslavskaya. They stayed in Kharkiv under Nazi occupation. They were Jewish and we know that they were confined to a concentration camp. There's almost no hope that they could have survived, but for forty years (until his death) my father had been trying to learn about their fate. Now I have renewed the search since many new sources have surfaced recently. My relatives belonged to a big Leikind family based in Kremenchug (Poltava, Ukraine) Those of the relatives who stayed outside Kharkiv, survived and I have already tracked them down through the Internet. But yet nothing is known about Dora ann Polina ...

I don't know about a Clara or Nikoleav Petchersky but I have come across a Petchersky (or Petcherski?) family in my research. They are from Mogilev (don't know specific town). I believe that my great-grandmother's brother Daniel Katzman married an Anna Petchersky (b.1905) in Ontario, Canada in the early 1900s. She had brothers Max and Peter. Their parents were Bernard Petchersky and Anne Zadove, Bernard had a brother named Felix Petchersky. All of these people lived in either Ontario, Detroit, or Chicago. Does this seem possibly connected to your Clara Petchersky?

Thanks,
-Heather

Vlad,

My Name is Ivan Iorsh, I was born in St.-Pete's, Russia in 1986.
My father, Vladimir Iorsh was born in Mariupol, Ukraine in 1958. (By the way, Mariupol is quite close to Kharkov). Most of our relatives from my grandfather's (father's father) side lived in Novozlatopol' village in Ukraine. However, most of them moved to Israel (Jaffa) about 20 years ago.

If you are interested in this information - please send me an email (iorsh86@yandex.ru) and I will try to provide some details.

There is no prepayment at Ukrainian Archives, but yes a
simple inquiry per surname will run you appx $75+ USD.

What religion did you family practice?

Any idea what the name of the village in Sakhnoschyna raion/district is?

If your family immigrated post WW2 and were DP's, your other option is to write the Village Administrator and make an inquiry re any surviving family still residing in the village/town?

I was born in 1969, so you and I are not that far apart... My grandfather, Benjamin Berkun, used to send money to members of his family still in the Ukraine (He was from Sokilifka). He was distraught that they had lost interest in Judaism, but still felt a bond. I think they were Gymnastics or some sort of Athletic trainers. Is this your family?
