Re: JASINSKI

Jasinski = English - Jasiński = Polish - Ясінський = Ukrainian - Ясинский = Russian - Ясінскі = Belarusyn

Today there are appx 4,300+ residents spread throughout Ukraine, who carry this surname. This surname is likely rooted in Polish word JASIN/JASIEN, which means ASH TREE.
Ash trees grow and mature faster than oak trees and lumber made from ash trees does not shrink like other wood products do when they are dried. Wood from ash is very durable and strong. Ash tree usage goes back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who used the wood to make spears and agricultural tools. So surname likely means person, who worked w/ash trees in some way. He could have been a furniture maker, tool maker (handles made from ash lumber) or even a medicine man (lilac-like leaves have some medicinal value).

You are likely looking for Podolskaya gubernia, which was a region during Czarist period. During Soviet Period, "Podolya" was broken down to several different regions: Vinnytska and Khmelnytska oblasts/regions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podolia_Governorate

http://www.sztetl.org.pl/en/selectcity/
================
================
Greding in Galicia ???

One place w/various names:
Gorodok [Rus], Graydik [Yid], Gródek Jagielloński [Pol], Horodok [Ukr], Grayding, Greiding, Grodig, Grudek Yagyelonski, Hrudek, Gródek

Above is not the one you are looking for, but at least we know that it is a variant name for Grodek (means TOWN), except we are looking for the one formerly in Podolskaya gubernia/governate/region.
=============================
I just looked at an old map of Podolskaya gubernia and see a Grudek??? Probably called Greiding as well. Now I have to find info.

Thank you so much for your assistance, I really appreciate your help. Olga's confirmation had Prischib on it and her arrival into canada form had Weinhow so I guessed at Weinau and Roberts Arrival form to Canada had Alexandbrook which I guessed as Alexandrowsk(from the handwriting)in Taurida. 2 of my uncles were born in the Ukraine and/or Germany as they made their way to England to take a ship to Canada and on the Arrival form was Michlowa which I guessed as Michalowka. They could not speak english prior to going to Canada and I assume someone helped them with their forms. Thank you again for all of your help.

Name of the town (6,000 today) is Shatsk = Шацьк in Ukrainian. During Interwar Period it was the battleground between the Poles and the Red Army in 1939. In that time frame it was in Luboml district. Today it is a district center w/appx 13 villages. It is possible that extended??? family ended up in Kharkiv. Stalin was not very happy w/anyone who voluntarily or involuntarily landed up in Germany. Their families landed up in resorts like Sakhalin in Siberia and Khazakstan and in the mines of the Donbas in Ukraine. Many people have returned to their homelands. I will check for the surname in both Kharkiv and Shatzk.

Maybe Grandmother was from Shatzk and Grandfather was from Kharkiv??? Until you get some paperwork from Bad Arolsen, everything is still a guess.

I did check for Hukow in Shatzk and found none.

Re: Info on Glina Family?

What was the full name of your Immigrant Ancestor and appx when did he/she emigrate? Where did they settle upon immigration?

Ellis Island shows this surname as predominantly Jewish during the Great Immigration Period. Keep in mind that certain places did not exist as geopolitcal entities during this time frame. Ukraine could have been Czarist Russia/later Soviet or Galicia Province > Austro-Hungarian Empire. Poland also did not exist from late 18th century to 1919. It was either Austro-Hungary or Russia. Belarus is another country that was under various heels, like Kingdom of Poland and Czarist Russia and earlier even part of the Lithuanian Polish Empire. If indeed the surname is Jewish, please understand that surnames for Jews and Russian Peasants were not mandated by Czar until early 19th century. You will need to ascertain where your specific family came from, before moving your search to Eastern Europe. I suggest you accumulate as much documentation as possible and stay flexible w/transliterational (sounds-like) spelling. Glina could be Glyna - Glina - Glena. In Ukraine it might be Hlyna - Hlina. In most Eastern Slavic languages it means CLAY.

Through my visits to many villages in Ukraine, I have heard stories of families in Ukraine adopting families from North American. Even tour guides will warn you to be careful on how much info you give the family... I was warned when I arrived in my father's village. The driver asked the questions. And that was in 1996.

Thanks "H"

Christine,

Ladaniuk/juk and Ladanchuk/czuk are two distinctly different surnames. The only thing they have in common is the root, which could mean BELOVED.

You might consider checking for the surname in places like Siberia and Khazakstan. Many Vohlynian families still have relatives there. Some just never returned to their homelands.

No offense meant, but I think these clan searches are an exercise in futility and they can get you into trouble. This is a world where accumulating relatives, who may not be your own, is very easy.

Thank You for taking the time to search for me. This name might be my family, to pronounce Ladanchuk: Ladanchook, so Ladanjuok might be them. Can you please provide the phone number and I will try calling it. Thank You, Christine

From the documents I have, it looks like he came to Canada in 1913 via Montreal. He was born in the district of Tarashch, town of Olchanka, village Buzovka on July 15, 1890 as Kuzma Nikitovich Goncharuk. He had a brother Aleksei who was held in captivity in Germany (year u/k, location u/k). He was Russian orthodox. This information is all assumption that this is my grandfather. Everything seems to match with one exception: this person was married but he didn't marry my grandmother (an Acadian) until 1926. If it's my grandfather, was he married in Russia, did his wife die or did he commit bigamy?

I have had no success locating the place, but I did find paperwork for Olga Loch and she listed Weinhow as her birth place.

Using https://www.sggee.org/research/village_maps.html the closest place name I could find was Weinau/Voynau (Chapejevka> Tokmak district > Zaporizzhia region). This was mostly Mennonite turf and I think your Russian German Immigrant Ancestors were Lutheran???

Another search gives us following info re Weinau, which is probably more accurately Olga's colony of origin.
http://www.grhs.org/chapters/ket/villages/weinau_taurien.htm

I would think that Byrklynya-Vyrklynia would be somewhere nearby??? (I better take another look at the place in Russian. I am begin to wonder if this was not Vohlynia???)

I will do some more searching tomorrow in the lists of Prischib Colonies> Molochna District.
Gabriela,

You could create a family tree on Ancestry.com, then create a photo gallery for that tree. You can control access to the tree by marking it "public" or "private".

I'm not familiar with tracing family who were displaced or fled as a result of WW II. Perhaps there are other members who have had experience in this area who may be able to provide you with some direction. I will respond once I have better information on this subject.

Richard

Hi Gabriela,

When you create a new thread, or reply to an existing one, there is a function to attach files. However, there is a practical limit imposed by Ancestry.com as to the size and the number of files that you can attach (I just don't know exactly what those limits are).

Another option is to add your files to a document server, such as Google Drive or Microsoft SkyDrive. You would need to register first, but it's fast and it's free.

The advantages are that Google Drive and MS SkyDrive allow you much more disk space to upload more documents, and you can also control who can see them. That way, you can be sure that they are being used for a noble cause.

I also re-read your first post. The direction that Mighthelp and I have given you so far will enable you to identify several generations of your Zarozhany ancestors from 1841-1932. Is that one of the objectives of your family search?

It also seems to me that another part of your search involves locating or determining the fate of your family members as a result of the horrific events that took place at the beginning of World War II.

Am I correct in my interpretation? If this is true, then you will need another strategy to achieve that objective.

Regards,

Richard

Hi Gabriela,

Yes, you have the process correct.

(1) Locate the Family History Centre in the city and country nearest you.

(2) Telephone your centre to inquire about ordering the microfilms. Some locations will let you place an order by phone or by visit, while other locations will ask you to order online. See the links below if you are ordering online.

(3) When your order arrives, they will advise you. You will then go to your centre to view the microfilms. They will hold the microfilms at the centre until you are finished, or until the rental period has expired.

If you live in Romania, there is also another Family History Centre in București:

Centru de Genealogie Mihai Bravu
Şoseaua Mihai Bravu, Nr. 495-497
București, Sector 3, ROMANIA
Tel.: +40-21-346 55 83

If you live elsewhere, visit the following link to find a centre near you: https://familysearch.org/locations/centerlocator

To register for a Family Search account to order your microfilms, visit: https://ident.familysearch.org/cis-web/pages/registration/re.... To order your microfilms online, visit: https://familysearch.org/films/.

When you receive your microfilms, I can provide you with some of my own research documentation and assist you with getting started if you desire. The staff in the Family History Centres are also very helpful.

Wishing you success in your ancestral research!

Regards,

Richard

To make sure I got this right - I haven't used the microfilm system until now - what I do is place an order for the microfilm I want to borrow, and a copy of the item will be sent to the centre in Ploiesti (address written by you), after which I consult it and give it back ?

p.s.: I checked one of the documents I have - Axenia's parents are Vasili (Wasyl) and Elena Toporivschi (Toporivskyj).

I think my gm Anastasia was born 1920 in Ukraine/Poland. She married my gf before coming to the US in 1946, through Ellis Island.

I know my gm Anastasia had a brother,Alexander, and a sister (no name yet) who raised her after their mother died.

My dad thinks she had an uncle, John Skuba who was their sponsor to U.S so Skuba was her moms maiden name.

So there is a John, Leisa and Charles Skuba that belong on our list somewhere.

Hi to both of you,

Thanks for taking the time, I very much appreciate it.

Richard is right: Toporivschi is the name written in a Romanian translated document.

Regarding my ancestors:
the info I have is scarce. Part of the family branch ran to Romania, where they had a time of terror during the communist period, therefore my grandfather wouldn't exactly share the info he knew. Silence was gold.
I have never met my great grandparents, they died before I was born.
I know very little, which can be summed up as follows:

Storyline:
My great grand father was Feodor Covali, he was married to Xenia and together they had one child Ioan (Ion/John).
Xenia presumably had some siblings (one or two sisters).
Feodor worked at the town hall. They also own part of the forest in the area.
Just before the russians armies arrived they left for Romania, the other relatives (Xenia's sisters) remained behind, saying they were planning to go to the USA.
And the story breaks off here.

Religion:
I guess they were Christian ortodox, but I am not rulling out any other religion.

Languages:
Feodor Covali spoke at least Romanian and Ukrainian, while Xenia only Ukrainian.

Names & spelling:
I know the names may vary due to the languages transliteration.
I have some files in which they appear with the names Axenia Vasilii Covali and Feodor Grigorii Covali - which I don't know what to make of.
In other files they are simply Teodor and Xenia.
Part of the documents say the owned some land in Dibrovca & Cociorva (in Zarozhany).

Irina Vasilii Ciglei (Toporivschi) and Daria Timofei Rabac (Toporivschi) appear on some other files. I know know who they are, i was hoping they were Axenia's sisters.

@Mighthelp:

"Your ancestral village is a picturesque place:
http://www.panoramio.com/photo_explorer#view=photo&posit..." yes, it seems like Eden, right before the apple fall. :)
Hi Gabriela and Hannia,

Based on the transliteration of the surnames in question, I'm assuming Gabriela found them in a document written in Romanian, and/or Gabriela's ancestors may have considered themselves ethnically Romanian.

Toporivschi (Rom.) = Топорівський (Ukr.) = Toporivskyj (Ukrainian -> English transliteration). It's unclear to me if this is a surname or if it is in reference to a village name.

Gabriela: can you clarify if Toporivschi is one or the other, and if your ancestors spoke Ukrainian or Romanian?

Regards,

Richard
