I just received my great-uncle's SSN application copy in the mail. He is listed as being born in Austria, however I know that during the first half of the 1900s, Ukraine was known as part of several different countries. His parents are listed as Michael Popick and Anna (Prokup) Popick. They emmigrated to the United States around 1910 into the NYC area. Anna remarried a man named John Krawiec (although his name is listed as Krauze in the 1930 census) and moved to the Ellington, CT area in the 1920s. I'm sure Michael Popick is anglicized.
