Barnaul was not a village. It was a major center for trade and culture. Population before Revolution in 1917 was at 70,000. It was modeled after St. Petersburg, until there was a major fire destroying many parts of the town.

The majority of the Germans who settled in the Altai area were Mennonites from the Molotschna and Choritza areas of the Black Sea region (Yekaterinoslav).

Did the family have some marital connection to the Mennonite Community?

Mennonites did/do have Swiss German roots.

There were Resettlement Contracts signed w/Resettlement Bureau in Barnaul. For all intents and purposes these were applications for homestead property.

This area was also known to have been a hideaway region for "Old Believers".
The village that Anastasia and Helene came from originally was Barnaul, Altai Republic, Russia. Helene Migrated back several times. I have reason to believe she even lived as a woman named Hindai Vogelson in Geneva.

I do know a School Principal, living right outside of Dniepropetrovsk, who subsidizes his income by performing genealogy research work. He is quite familiar w/Dniepropetrovsk Archives. If you might be interested, please email me for his name and email address. His rates are very fair.

Hello

I realise that you posted this message over eleven years ago but inevitably information finds its way. Helena Wolkowa was my great great grandmother, Anastasia Wolkowa's sister. It seems she migrated back and forth from the US to Europe several times under different names. I hope you get this message.

Working on it! Meletius Dutkevich had 11 children, so I am sure that there are any number of relatives out there that I have not found yet. He lived in Vienna and Warsaw and some of his children lived in Ukraine, so it's a very slow process.

I have found information on the wife and other children of Alexander Meletovich.

Alexandra Minovna Dutkevich (wife), Alexander Alexandrovich and Dr. Eudoxia Alexandrovna lived in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. They all died between 1978 and 1980. The children never married and died childless.

Parmut is indeed a rare surname. Old data shows the surname attached to Pskov Slavic nobility.That region is due east of Estonia. Two historical facts to keep in mind is that Kazan Tartar attacks against Russian Empire started in the 15th/16th century and "Russian Jews" (mostly Ashkenazi) colonized Southern Russia (today Ukraine) via the Northern and Northwestern Russian gubernias during the Pale of Settlement.

The surname can be found in the Census Register of Tsarist Russia (Ivan the Terrible 1533-1584). Ivan is known for actively creating a new nobility, the dvoryanstvo. He distributed the family name, Parmut, only in cases of high praise or distinction.
==========================================
In the Islamic World, Jewish surnames are derived mainly from places of origin. Sephardic surnames are medieval, having mostly floral references, and most Ashkenazi had no surnames until appx 19th century.
==========================================
Derivation of Hebrew Forms w/UT suffix by Bolozky @Univ. of Massechusetts - Aramaic Roots ???
http://www.umass.edu/judaic/faculty/documents/BolozkySchwarz...
========================
========================
The first mention of Jewish settlements in Priluki was in 1648 when they were destroyed during the Khmielnytsy massacres. The Jewish community was restored at the beginning of the nineteenth century and by 1847***, there were over 2,000 Jews in the shtetl. The Jewish population grew to 5,722 in 1897 and to over 9, 000 in 1926 (31.4% of the population).

***Knowing what we know regarding Pskov, I will take a guess and say your family very likely may have emigrated from Vitebsk gubernia???

Following records for Pryluki Jews available in Ukraine on film thru LDS @ nominal cost.

To locate your nearest center use following link:
https://familysearch.org/locations

Title
Metrical books, 1855-1917

Authors
Jewish Congregation.
Orgin of the Surname Parmut (Пармут)

Hello everyone,

I am trying to find out information on the origins of this surname. Parmut is a very rare surname, I have a few educated guesses but I am still not quite sure. My family (Parmut) is from Pryluky Ukraine originally. The werid thing about it is or family is Jewish but the name Parmut has the mut/ut suffix wish is not extremely common in Askenazi surnames. It doesn't seem to have germanic root or slavic on that I can think of. A researcher at the Ukrainian national museum told me that surnames such as Parmut, Bahmut, Yarmut,Marmut, Originate from southern Ukraine and may be of possible Tatar origin. My familes phenotype on that side resembles more of a slavic/turkic type. The don't have as much of the mediterrian features as typical Askenazi Jews. I am still at loss though and It would be great to get a second opinion. Thanks Grisha.

I am researching the metalworker Samuel Yellin (1884-1940), whose naturalization records indicate that he was born in Mogolov, Russia. I have not been able to find anything about Mogolov or its location in my internet research.

Have you learned anything about Mogolov in the course of your research? Is there an alternative spelling of the town that you have discovered?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All best,
Bruce Barnes
bruce@ada1900.org

Meletius may never have taught at the University of Warsaw. The only references I can find to him are as a photographer in Krakow, a suburb of Warsaw. Perhaps he was the official photographer FOR the botany department.

It would explain why his son became a photographer.

These two photographs showed up in a family collection, labelled "Maternal Grandmother" and "Maternal Aunt". That implies that they are Tileshevskaya's; possibly from Cherykaw (Belarus), but the photos were taken in Ekaterinoslav, where I believe they lived at some point.

DUTKEVICH information: adding what I discover

My great-great grandfather was Melety (Meletius) Dutkevich, born approximately 1840-1850 in Russia (Poland). He was an administrator and professor of botany at the University of Warsaw, which was part of Russia at the time he was there. I believe that he originally taught at the University of Vienna.

He had 11 children, including my great-grandmother Olga (1875-1964) and her brother Meletius Peter (1871-1939). He came to the United States in 1889 and travelled the world as a photographer. She married, moved to the United States in 1924 and settled in New York.

I may also have made a connection to another of the 11 children. My grandparents' immigration documents list an Alexander Dutkevich as their contact in Russia.

There is an Alexander M. Dutkevich and his son George Alexandrovich on the G-to-G geologists website. They were apparently executed by the Nazis in 1937 for supposed subversive activity. The dates and city of birth (Yekaterinaslav/Dnipropetrovsk) are correct, so I am going to go out on a bit of a limb and assume that the M stands for Meletovich.
http://www.g-to-g.com/index.php?version=eng&module=5&amp...

I am searching for any relatives with more information. If you can be of any assistance, I would be most appreciative.

I got a reply from the Univ of Vienna. It seems that Melety never taught there, but there were 4 Dutkevich professors that they had in their records. Maybe it will help someone else.

unfortunately, we have to inform You that we could not find a trace of Melety (Meletius) Dutkevich in our archive materials. But we found some other persons bearing the name Dutkevich in the “Matrikel”:
Bogdan 1901/02: phil. Fac.;
Johann: Johann 1856/57: phil. Fac.;
Stanislaus: 1884: theol. Fac.;
Michael: phil. Fac.

Yours very truly
Johannes Seidl

Wow! The lady replied. She doesn't know much of anything about Sabine Dutkevich, her great-grandfather, but she's going to visit her aunt who may know more.

They are very interested in learning more of their family history, so if I look and she looks, maybe we can help each other whether we're the same Dutkeviches or not!

Google tells me that the mayor of Wraclow, Poland is also a Dutkevich. :-)

I have found a wealth of information on the Loveiko side of the family on that site. Like back to 1650.

There is one reference to Dutkevich. I have sent an email to the person who posted. Her relative was born at roughly the same time and in the same place as my relative, so I am hopeful that it's another of the 11 children. I am not holding out much hope that she will respond, though. It was her only post and was 2 years ago. I don't know if the email address is still good.

I have also sent emails to the Universities of Vienna and Warsaw to see if there is any information on Melety's professorships.

Unfortunately, it's looking like many of the descendants of Melety did not survive the Nazis or the Soviets. :-(

RELATIVES- Marchenko

Due to a request from an acquaintance, I am looking for any possible Canadian relatives of Marchenko Peter. He was an immigrant from Ukraine, Dnepropetrovsk Region (at the time it was called Yekatirinoslav) and was born in about 1885.

During the Russian Revolution, Peter was either exiled or ran away overseas. His son, Marchenko Peter Petrovich 1910-1967, lived in a town called Loshkarevskie Hutora, in Dnepropetrovsk region.

In 1975-77, Peter Jr.'s son, Marchenko Anatoliy Petrovich 1937-1980, was contacted by officials claiming that there were relatives in Canada who were searching for the Marchenko family.

If any one is familiar with any of these names or knows how I can find out if there are relatives of this person in Canada, give me a shout. Greatly appreciated!

Юля ,I understand your situation. Yesterday I was at the central archive of Dn-sk oblast on behalf of one lady from Italy. I had a very long conversation with the director, and I asked her about your issue as well . I’d like to share some information that I have received with you.

Does your cousin have any contact with those women that tried to help her ? Perhaps they could tell us whom they asked about The Khinkis and where they were.

Do you have email address ? I think I could write to you directly to tell more.

Sergiy.
Sergiy, it is so nice of you to help me!
My cousin from Israel was in contact with people from Nikopol a few months ago. These women who were teachers are probably dead by now, and my cousin thinks that one of them probably went to the US or Israel, but since she was married, we cannot find her by her maiden name.
The other lady never got married, so she was a KHINKIS when she died...her name was Anna. We don't know the name of her sister.

Nikopol is in our oblast ( quite far BTW).
When did someone go to those schools ? Does your cousin from Israel have any information ? My cousin already had someone check school records in Nikopol and found nothing...OR just did not look hard enough.

Where do YOU live? I am in New Jersey.

My aunt in Kiev has diabetes pretty bad and doesn't really travel :( Besides, she is the type that would rather keep the past in the PAST!

I wish I could go there in person, it's just so hard dealing with people on the phone! They are not very nice to me at all, especially since my Russian is not very good.

I understand your situation with that ZAGS . But there are ways to obtain the information from them.

Let me give you some ideas again

-	You know his daughters were teachers . So , all information on them can be found in local department of education. Someone can visit any school in Nikopol and ask about them. ( believe me it will work ) Some time ago I found lost people when went to a school and asked. One of them was zavuch ( such people are remembered very long )

-	To contact local Jewish community . Try to find Jewish names in a phone book and give a call. Jewish communities is not very big in small towns and they know each other very well.

-	Old papers from synagogues are in state archives ( I saw them with my own eyes) You could think of them too.

-	How old is your aunt ? She could make a trip there. All you need is someone who could go there on your behalf. Where do you live ?

-	At least you have Red Cross. Their central office is in Kiev and your aunt could find them easily. I don’t like them much ( too complicated, slow , etc)

I do think your problem can be solved.

Sergiy.
Hi Sergiy,

I DO speak Russian and when I called ZAGS, they told me they can tell me NOTHING until I prove how I am related to the person I am looking for. They said I have to bring in birth certificates to prove my relation. They would not even tell me if they HAVE the information there. The girl on the phone would tell me nothing.

I looked in the phone directory for ALL of Ukraine. There are only 3 people with the last name KHINKIS, one of them is my aunt :) She lives in Kiev. I was born in Kiev.

I also know that Abram Khinkis had two daughters, one was a teacher in Nikopol and another was a "ZAUCH"...that's all I have.

I am pleased to meet you too. First I do think you have a lot to complete you search successfully.
( = correct names , place of birth and living , perhaps participation in the WW2 … )
So , you have to learn if those materials are still in a local ZAGS. They might pass them to a state archive in Dnipropetrovsk might not . Sometimes archives demand materials much earlier then necessary.

It is even better if they are still there. We have to find someone who could come to them and solve the problem ( you don’t need any official papers for restitution ).

I would strongly recommend you to read phone directory for Nikopol. The name is very rare ( and that is good ). I would call anyone with Jewish name and ask to help.

До you speak Russian /Ukrainian ? Where do you write from ? Will think more…

Sergiy.
