JewUA_org

I don't think you understood the initial post and you are arguing a moot point.

The initiator of this thread posted documented information.

Immigrant Ancestor was from Historic Galicia Province, and there was/is no Galicia/Halyczyna in Chernigov/Chernihiv !!!
-----------------------------

As far as your own relatives are concerned, please notice that they were crossed off the ship manifest. That line across their names means they never got on and off the ship. They had tickets, but for some reason they did not board. Unfortunately there is no annotation, so I cannot be more specific. You will have to continue looking for other records for them.

You might want to take a look at following. I used criteria Jewish, surname starting w/letter M, emigrating from sounds like Pryluki Russia:
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/engine/gold.php?uid=...

I will disagree with you.
You have described small village with 2-3 Jewish families...
I search a brother of my G G grandpa who emigrate from Priluki to USA in 1911 and find record in Ellis Island

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/matchMore.asp?MID=00790385...

In original record was row - Priluki, Poland too. And I have seen not one such records in Ellis Island archiv. Seems that Poles who worked there marked most Ukrainian city and shtetls as Poland for unknown reason. May be due to some nationalistic views (Poland was divided between Russia, German and Austria-Hungary empires)

Small village can't be a source of dozens Jewish emigrants instead of big city in Chernigov guberniya with 9000 jewish community.
JewUA_org

Yes, there is a Preluky in Chernihivska oblast (formerly called Chernigov gubernia), but there is also a village in Podkarpackie wojiwodstwo/region > SE POLAND.
Bobbi, my apologies. It all just dawned on me. It has been five yrs since we last had contact.

I just emailed a friend, who should be currently traveling in this area. I asked that if time allows to please swing by the church or call the parish priest and ask about church registers. In the last few yrs missing church registers have started to reappear. Just a few weeks ago I heard that records for another village in I-F were recovered. They had been hidden in the foundation of an old barn for 80+ yrs.

I will get back to you as soon as I hear more.

Mighthelp - Hania - Hannia
That site has helped me before. I've even had a article placed in the local newspaper in that area looking for relatives and it worked! But i've not been able to get details about the cemetery, i have asked a few times but nothing comes of it.

Having said that, it has been a few years since last i was in contact with my relative in Малий Рожен and perhaps I should try again. I've had a break from my research there.

I might post about the cemetery myself thanks.

I also have information that the only way I can a get birth, marriage document is via a relative in the area. Wish I could do that myself. Do you know if writing to the church would yield anything?

Thanks for your assistance 'mighthelp'!

His birth year is c. 1872.(The name is actually written Chrenko on the manifest.)

Looks like he's escorting Maria Chrenko over. Her birthplace is "Hungary, Bosacz" and I think there are ditto marks under this for Janos' birthplace.

Maria's nearest relative (also named Janos Chrenko) lives in "Bosacz C. Trencsin." This would correspond with Bošáca in the Trenčín Region of western Slovakia.

Maria
There should be a place of birth on the church marriage record. Might you have it? You certainly need a location, location, location - place of birth - to proceed with the research.

Polish spelling: Czereńko, Czerewko, Czerwenka, Czerwenko, Czerwienka, Czerwienko, Czerwinka, Czerwionka, Czerwionke, Czerwonka, Czerwonko.
I only had time to locate one of the places you are researching : Popowa Gora

This settlement was first mentioned in 1387.

From 1802-1921 Popowa Gora > Surazh uyezd/district > Chernigov gubernia/region > Tsarist Russia. During the above time frame the population was predominantly BELARUSYN, with many "Old Believers" living in the immediate area.

During the Interwar Period it was renamed KRASNAYA GORA > Oriol district > Russia SSR. TODAY it is still called Krasnaya Gora, and is the district center town of the Krasnaya Gora district > Bryanskaya oblast/region > Russia.

Coordinates 53.00-31.36. The town of appx 6,ooo is located 32 miles W of Surazh, near the Belarus border.

PS> I will get to the others in the next day or so.

The Matyczuk surname is a variant Ukrainian surname formed from male baptismal name Matthew. It is rooted in Hebrew and means GIFT OF GOD.
Hello Maria.

???

I think you are probably looking for Jan, Janos or Johann (anglicized to John), emigrating from Hungary. What we know for sure is given name starts w/letter J.

Use following site & try finding immigration documentation for him and hopefully his EXACT place of origin. Once we have a specific place name, we can take your research to Eastern Europe. Carpatho Rus today could be Ukraine, could be Slovakia, etc.

When you access following link, submit the surname the priest used in LAST NAME - SOUNDS LIKE. In ETHNICITY SECTION click off Hungarian, Polish and Ruthenian. Then click SEARCH. It might take a few minutes depending on your download speed, because you are submitting a soundex-sounds like search. Don't put anything else in. The more general your search, the bigger your net will be. Keep in mind that the details are in the ship manifest and it would be wise to sign on as member (free) at Ellis Island (http://www.ellisisland.org/) before proceeding to Steve Morse link. You need to view the handwritten 2 page manifest. Use available zoom to take a closer look.

If he settled in PA, additionally do same w/Baltimore and Philadelphia entry ports on Steve Morse link.

http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html

If you run into a problem, let me know.
Alex, make sure to read entire post before clicking on sites provided.
==========================
==========================

From 1802 - 1929/1932 the Chernigovskaya gubernia/region (Czarist then Soviet Russia) had 15 uezd/ counties, eleven of which (Borzna, Hlukhiv, Horodnia, Kozelets, Konotop, Krolevets, Nizhen, Novhorod-Siverskyi, Oster, Sosnytsia, Chernihiv) are located within Ukraine today. The remaining four northern counties (Mglin, Novozybkov, Starodub, Surazh) were part of a mixed Ukrainian, Belarusyn and Russian ethnic territory and today are geopolitical entities in Russia and Belarus. Your ancestral town, Ushcherpe, was in Surazh uezd and today Surazh/Сураж is located in Bryanskaya oblast/ Брянская oбласть > RUSSIA .

TODAY village Ushcherpe = Ущерпье still exists w/population of 1,016 > Klintsovsky raion/district > Bryansk oblast/region. District portal follows. If you do not know Russian, use Bing Translator. Submit following URL for full translation. Bing has the much better translator than Google. http://www.bing.com/translator

http://klintsy-portal.ru/index.php?id_catalog=192

Upon accessing site there is an IMPORTANT Genealogy Section in top menu. Looks like inquiry can be conducted at Bryansk State Archives + other places as well.

Additionally, LDS has filmed St. Nicholas Orthodox Church Registers in Ushcherpe. Along the way I came across some very interesting history for this village. At the turn of the 17th/18th century, your ancestral village was company headquarters for the illustrious Starodub Cossack Regiment.
==================================
==================================
==================================
The information you received that there were quite a few emigrants from Ushcherpe is pretty accurate. The cause was likely the huge earthquake in 1908, that caused tremendous destruction throughout this region and as far East as Kyev.

Using following link, submit in SOUNDS LIKE-PLACE NAME: Ushcherpe and click RUSSIAN ethnicity. Submit nothing else. Then click SEARCH. A list of emigrants from Ushcherpe will come up. I did see a Kosjan Korniechkow coming from the village in 1910, but go thru the entire list. Make sure to examine all the ship manifests of interest, because that is where you will find the details.
Also make sure to become a free member at Ellis Island before using Steve Morse link, if you are not already one. That will enable you to examine the original ship manifests.

http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html
=========================
=========================
Good Luck!!!
This would be my great-Grandfather. I think it was around late 1800's. They settled in eastern PA in a very small place called Keystone. His name was John Cherinko and it was later spelled Chirinko. When his son married in his wife's Polish Church, the Polish priest spelled the name
"Czerwenko" and later in the document "Czerwienko".
One Federal Census said they came from Carpathian Rus.
Thanks, Maria

My mother (Stella Grulikowski) is a Karnafel and the sister of William Sr. also the sister of Stanley (D), John (D) and Eleanor. My first cousin William Jr. attended my wedding in Rancho Cordova, Calif on April 16, 1966. I would be interested in learning more about the Karnafel ancestry. I have a picture of the Karnefel family taken in 1917 and on the back of the picture is written Andrew Karnawski 1890 taken 1917, Springwell Ave. Very interesting. I have also seen the Karnofel spelling.

Ushcherpe- Chernigov gubernia

I am researching my ancestry back to the region of Chernigov gubernia. My family arrived between 1912-1913, and I was told it was part of a mass emigration from the village of Ushcherp'e, where my family is from. Apparently, large numbers of villagers were brought to the US to work, but it's unclear as to how they got here; it's difficult to find records, though I have heard from an aunt that they came through Canada. Has anybody had experience looking in this area?

Hello, I deciphered a name on an Alberta, Canada census that i thought might be Matechuk -- often the spelling are wrong. The woman's name could be Elena Matechuk born in 1851 in Bukovina. She is the "old mother" of probably the wife [whose name I cannot decipher]. Husband is George Ewasiuk. Iwasiuk. They are from Oshychlib, Bukovina. Also spelled Oszecklib and various other spellings.

Hi, my name is Lorie-Ann Matechuk. I am the eldest daughter of Nick Matechuk whom is the son of Williams Matechuk brother. Williams brother Nicholas had 5 children: Adam, Joanne, my dad Nick, Linda and Johnny. William's brother Nicholas was married to Jennie Lachowich. Nicholas died of cancer in I believe 1957. His wife Jennie ran a store and taxi business for many years, gradually working down to just having the corner store to run. Adam is retired living in I believe Bruce Mines or Elliot Lake, Ontario area, Joanne passed away in Sept 2011, Nick is still running a hotel business outside Ottawa in a town called Quyon, Quebec, Linda is still working and living in Sault Ste Marie, and Johnny is retired from the Steel Plant several years ago and living in the Sault.

My father Nick had two children, me, Lorie-Ann Matechuk, living in Calgary, Alberta and kid sister Kathleen Matechuk living in the Quyon , Quebec area.

I would love to put together a family tree and would appreciate any help anyone has to offer....due to my grandfather passing away, I do not know the whole Matechuk history and would love to piece together family history!
