Talne--Grossman, Polevoy, Gorodetsky, Boutelkoff

Most of my Russian family lived in Talne in the nineteenth century.

It appears that the Gorodetskys were rabbis. Boutelkoff was a Talmudic scholar and spiritual leader.

Perhaps they were involved in the development of Hasidism--I would guess that is right.

The Polevoys owned a small general store. The bartered with peasants.

my great great grandmother was Tuba Gorodetskaya
her first husband was Norman Grossman (Uman)
her second husband was Boutelkoff
she had three children--Ariel Grossman, Sonya Boutelkoff, and Anna Boutelkoff

my great grandmother was Olga (Dora) Polevoy
she had the following siblings: Isadora, Abraham, Samuel, Fanny and Morris
Her father was Isaac Polevoy

I have done a great deal of research, but have found little support from Jewish research institutions.

I would like to be in touch with other families from Talne.

I am working on a visual archive of nineteenth century photos.

Regards,

Rachel Grossman

When you initially posted this message, making inquiries re DP (Displaced People) was more complicated than it is today. A few yrs ago all the documentation for DP was gathered and stored in Bad Arolsen Archives. These are still being digitized, but you can still submit an inquiry.

Luckily Germans kept exc records during WW2. These records are now available to immediate family free of charge. Turn around time can be a few days or as much as six months nowadays. This archives contains the entire history of your Mama, who was an Ostarbeiter/Forced Laborer. There are also personal details like exact place of birth, name of parents, etc. All you need to do is submit full name and exact date of birth. You can e-mail your inquire. Don't forget to include your full address and be patient.

After you access link, click INQUIRIES BY FAMILY MEMBERS.
ITS-Arolsen ORG/Homepage
www.its-arolsen.org/

LDS has only filmed 1874-1915 Smila RC Church Registers.

If you have already tried Kyiv Historical Archives to no avail, as a last resort try both RAHS in Smila. They are suppose to have only the newer records, but frequently they hold on to older ones as well. The first address is specifically for the town and second for micro-district.

РАЦС по місту Сміла
Смілянського міськрайонного управління юстиції
вул.Дзержинського, 24
м.Сміла 20700
УКРАЇНА - UKRAINE

telephone for above = тел.: (04733) 4-22-72
----------------------------------------------------------

РАЦС по Смілянському району
Смілянського міськрайонного управління юстиції
вул.Леніна, 45
м.Сміла 20700
УКРАЇНА - UKRAINE

тел.: (04733) 4-12-04
My maternal grandmother, Zofiz Serednicka, came from Uluch and her father's name was Nykolaj Serednicky (born 1854). Her mother was Anna Dziubakiewicz. Zofia also had brothers Theodor and Michael Serednicky who also emigrateed to the United States before WW I, but I have no knowledge of any other siblings who remained in Uluch. I do know that she visited her "family" in Uluch in 1933 before WW II, so she had good reason to go back there. Feel free to contact me. We may have some family in common. Attached is a picture of Nykolaj which my grandmother brought with her to the US.

My family is from Talne. The surnames are Polevoy, Grossman, Gorodetsky, and Boutelkov. The Polevoys had a general store in the village, probably from 1860s forward. I was very close to Olga Polevoy, my great-great grandmother. She died at the age of 103.

The second husband of my great-great grandmother was a Talmudic scholar. There was an important Jewish school in the village--the inhabitants supported studies for up to 50 men in the nineteenth century. The town had an incredible wooden synagogue. It seems out of place in such a small community.

Here is a good website: www.jewua.org. It has an article on Talne.

Best,

Rachel Grossman

I am looking for a Boutelkoff who married a "Tuba" (nickname) who had been married to a Grossman. They had a connection with Uman--her son was born there.

Boutel means "flask". From what I can tell bocken means "buck". I am wondering if my family name was changed because I have come across very few.

Be prepared to play with the root--given the linguistic influences--Polish, Ukrainian, High Russian, Low Russian, Yiddish, and Hebrew there are many, many possibilities. One surname in my family had six variants among siblings of the same generation. Slavic names became Germanic and vice versa. So you might find some surprises.

There were no standard transliterations until relatively recently.

I have the same situation in my Russian family with people who seem to look as if they are from Northern Europe. Ironically my great-uncle looks very fair and my grandfather, his brother, looks darker.

Hello, I am looking for my family in the Ukraine. Specifically I would like to build an accurate tree and make a CD of images to share with my extended family.

I am a little overwhelmed by primary research as records for most years are missing.

"My" Polevoys owned a general store in Talne, probably from 1870-1893. I do not know if there are records of businesses.

I know there were four Polevoys born in my family between 1882 and 1893--I have their names.

I would welcome advice, especially if you have looked in a town nearby.

Best,

Rachel Grossman

Aha, now I see Victoria where your such a perfect english comes from.

I don't know much as well. Last time when Muzichuk's from Canada visited their sister (my grandmother) was in late 80's in Ukraine. The way I tracked them in Canada comes from the bible presented to my grandfater and signed as (to Oleksiy(my granddad) from Fred(Frederic/Fedir), Punnichy, Saskachewan, Canada). Both passed their way already :( The whole story you already know from the link above.

Where about are you in UK if it's not secret? I've been to Greater London 10 years ago for short period (1 academic year), used to live in Ealing there. Get in touch and drop me some line to my e-mail please some day, when you'll have free minute. Looking forward to.
Sure if you want to.
Was nice to meet you and talk to you.
Kind regards, Oleksiy
Greetings

Kindly thank you for getting back and for your update.
I knew this resource you have mentioned: http://www.locatefamily.com .
I tracked before the list of people you provided. Most of them have passed their way already and I couldn't find their ancestors reading their obituaries. I wrote even an e-mail to Punnichy village major and canadian congress of ukrainians President in Saskachewan region... but received no responce.
Some of the rest of Muzichuk's from there, the 3rd's, 4th's 5th's generation...and so on - have moved to USA, to California, Florida, Michigan, MA Midleton and so on...
I have found few of them in social networks such as facebook and myspace, but didn't manage yet to set up a single contact with them.
I suppose this is because of.... they rare using social networks, and on the other side - I don't have suficient funds to top-up skype account in order to give them a call to landline telephone number.
Will much appreciate any advice about how to proceed with this issue. I'm in Ukraine/Lviv at the moment.

Today there are appx 3,300 Ukrainian with Muzyczuk = Музичук	surname residing in Ukraine. Most can be found in what was formerly the Old Vohlynskaya gubernia > Czarist Russia, then divided into smaller regions during Interwar Period under Reconstituted Poland's domain and again during Soviet domain. Others are spread throughout Ukraine, East and West.

The original poster in this subforum has Immigrant Family from Cherkassy oblast, which at one time was part of the old Kyevskaya gubernia, Czarist Russia.
=============================================

The family in the link you provided were from what is the Kovel raion/district of what is today Vohlynska oblast/region.

You should be able to find your family members here. Start w/the ones still living in Punnichy, which is where the family first settled upon immigration.
http://www.locatefamily.com/M/Munyandinda_to_Muntz/Muzechea_...

I am looking for any information about relatives, descendants and ancestors of my great grandfather, Павел Иванович Шутенко, Pavel Ivanovich Shutenko,Павло Іванович Шутенко. He had all his property confiscated 1929 and died 1946. I am not sure of his birth date or birth place but he is, as I am lead to believe, a Zaporozhian Cossack, he had at least two sons, Павел Иванович, Pavel Ivanovich, Павло Іванович and Михоил Павлович, Mikhail Pavlovich, Михаил Павлович. The family moved from the Ukraine to the Kuban territory, Timashevsk, in 1960. My mother was born in 1923, село Погорильци, Чигиринский район, Кировоградская область,
село Погорільці, Чигиринський район, Кіровоградська область.
My grandmother was Елена Дониловна Постригань, Elena Donilovna Postrigan,Олена Доніловна Постриганем.

Are there any relatives still in the area and where can I find out information about my ancestors?

Re: Origins of MOMOT

Karen,

As per Father's Baptismal Certificate his true name was more likely Wasyl (Ivanovych - son of Ivan) Momot.
===============================

As per Declaration of Intent for USA Naturalization dated April 23, 1938:

EOW MOMOT dob May 5, 1890 (migrated via Rotterdam as Ivan MOHMOD) was born in Kozmin Russia***. He and his wife, Paraskeva, (frequently anglicized to Pearl, Polly or Pauline) were residing at 2214 64th St. Bklyn. She was born 8/30/1897 in Podhieji > Austria***. Children listed : William dob April 14, 1918, Alexander dob Aug 30, 1919 and Henry 10/15/1927.
---------------------------------------------
Ellis Island ship manifest shows Deedo Ivan Mohmod (transcription error) as coming from Kozmin > Wohl. > Russia.

Grandfather's village is located appx 200 miles E of Kyiv (the capital city) in what was called Vohlynskaya gubernia/region >Tsarist Russia.*** It was founded in 1480, but archealogical digs on outskirts of the village indicate that there was settlement here, going back to the 11/12th century. TODAY the selo/village Kuzmyn (pop 2,028) is in Krasilivskij raion/district of the Khmelnytska oblast/region of Ukraine, latest zip code 31047.

http://town-map.com.ua/kuzmin_krasilovskiy_hmelnitskaya.htm

***Grandfather probably said he was from a village not too far from Kyiv, the region. During Grandfather's time frame the Vohlynskaya and Kyevskaya gubernias abutted one another.
-----------------------------------------------------
Grandmother emigrated from Historic Galicia Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Hapsburg Emperors). Today this may be Pidhaijtsi > Ternopilska oblast > Ukraine.

Ternopilska and Khmelnytska regions also abut each other. Immigrants found comfort in marrying a spouse from their own region or district or in Grandfather's case from the same vicinity.

Does anyone know Grandmother's maiden name and maybe we can locate an immigration record which might tell us more about her exact origin? Immigrants frequently referred to their district center towns as places of origin, because their own villages were very small. Maybe manifest will show if she was from a village in Pidhajtsi or from Pidhajtsi, the town proper.
_________________________________

William probably baptized Wasyl
Alexander " " Olexandre
Henry " " Hryhorij ???

Where were Wasyl, Oleksa and Hrych baptised ? These are the names &/or nicknames their Mother called them.

Ukrainian church records are quite detailed. May very well contain Baba Paulina's place of birth and name of her parents???

Grandfather was Christian Orthodox. His village is listed as having its own Orthodox church and own Jewish kahal.

========================
==========================
========================

GRANDFATHER

Mohmod, Ivan from Kusmin, Wolh. Russia 19yrs old appx dob 1891 arrival Ellis Island 1910

Other Momot from same village. Some may have returned???
Moment, Sylvester Kosmin, Russia 32 1875 1907
Momid, Sochar Kuczmen 19 1888 1907
Momot, Arseny Kuzmina, Russia 17 1895 1912
Monsud, Simon Kuzmin, Russia 21 1891 1912

ORIGINAL SHIP MANIFESTS SHOW A GREAT DEAL OF DETAIL.
http://www.ellisisland.org/
===========================
===========================
The Cossacks were not ethnically a homogeneous group. They were a bunch of bad boys that included all kinds of micro-ethnic groups from what is Eastern Ukraine today. What tied them together was their love of freedom.

It is important to keep in mind that if family story re Momot, a Napoleon deserter, is accurate, village records would not show any documentation pre 1813. Napoleon invaded Russia in 2nd half of 1812.
=========================
Momot does look like an exotic name, but today there are appx 8,500+ Ukrainians w/this exact surname. It is spread throughout entire Ukraine. In Kuzmyn there are STILL 123 villagers that carry Momot surname. I have listed only the males and transliterated their given and patronymic names. Based on this long list of Momot in Kuzmyn, I would say that your chances of locating Grandfather's surviving family are pretty good.

МОМОТ СТЕПАН РАДИОНОВИЧ 0 1932-02-24 КУЗЬМИН
Found Levchenko Natalia Tarasovna in Kryvyi Rih, born 1912. I do not believe that she would still be living. She is not listed in the phone directory. Below is her address.

Левченко Наталия Тарасовна
Гірничий 13 - 103
Кривий Ріг місто
Дніпропетровський район
Дніпропетровська область
Україна 50057
UKRAINE

NOTE: Three different ways in spelling the name of the street. I found the street name Гірничий in the address data; Гірницький (мкрн), in the postal code data; Горняцкий Мкрн in the phone directory. It took me some time to figure all this out! Some data is in Ukrainian and some in Russian.

Yes, there are Levchenko (Левченко) in Medvyn (Медвин).

Her name was Natalia Tarasovna (or Tarasova) Levchenko. She was born 1912 and was most recently residing in Krivoy Rog (or some similar spelling to that degree). Thank you for your help. Also, I think the reason you didn't find her before is I believe that my great-great grandmother's last name was Levchenko and was changed to Livchenko in translation (as there are still Levchenkos in Medvin which I would like information for too if you wouldn't mind). Once again thank you so much.

Sincerely, Brandon Taschuk

Hello lorsyl2. Since you've been able to find all of these things I was wondering if you'd be able to find a possibly living person in Krivoy Rog (sorry if I spelled name wrong). I found out my great-great grandmother's sister was living there 12 years ago and I was hoping you could search phonebooks or whatever it is you do to find these people. Thank you for your help. You don't know how much it would mean to me if this woman is still alive and you could find her or find out when she died. If you're up for the challenge then please reply or contact me at brandontaschuk@gmail.com and I'll give you the very limited information I have. Thanks.

Sincerely, Brandon Taschuk

Yes, it was Ivan Livchenko.

For records, before 1860, you may want to play with this LDS site, starting with typing in Cherkasy in the, "Place Search".

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a...

Good luck!

Thank you for your quick reply! I knew about the Kapustinskys in Pogiblyak because I recently came in contact with them (and they are family). Was this an Ivan Kapustinsky you found living in Kiev or an Ivan Livchenko? Do you know if there'd be any record for people born before 1860 in Ukraine? Once again thank you for your help.

Sincerely, Brandon Taschuk

Hello, I am interested in any information that can be given about the Kapustinsky family from Pogiblyak/Pohyblyak in the Cherkasy Oblast. I am currently researching Prokhor Kapustinsky (1865-1932)and his father Eugene Kapustinsky (Eugene had a brother named Evtuos Kapustinsky if it helps). I know next to nothing about these people so I would appreciate any help anyone can offer. I am also researching Marfa Livchenko and her family. The only thing I know about her is that she was born in Medvyn and had a sister named Natalia Livchenko. Once again your help is appreciated.

Sincerely, Brandon Taschuk.

Hi: Just thought I would let you know I just had an amazing trip to Ukraine, I met relatives I didn't even know I had. Everyone was very warm and generous, even though they don't have much they give with their hearts. They don't ask for anything in return. the only problem was the language barrier, they don't speak English and I speak very little Ukrainian and understand some Ukrainian but we managed.

Surname: LYSYANUK

Original ukrainian surname of 'Lysyanyuk' became' Lesney' upon immigration to Canada and then, the states.
Name originates from kozak/cossack from Lysyanka who settled in the village of Sabadash in 1640s.
I am the grand-daughter of Prokofi Lysyanyuk (b.1893) in Sabadash, Ukraine, Russian Empire (d.1980 USA).
Any church records and/or information will be appreciated.
Disregard any reference to surname 'Lysyanney' or similar from Sabadash as the spelling is incorrect. Thank you, k
