looking for Setnicar's

My grandfather Albert always told me that our last name was changed when my great (or great great) grandparents came over from Slovenia. Since he passed away about 10 years ago I no longer know how to get in contact with the family we still have overseas. Most of the Setnicar's I know of reside in the Waukeagan, IL area. I am hoping to find relatives to catch up with but also to find out what our true last name is. Please if you know of family you may have in the states, specifically the Illinois region please message me back. I would really appreciate this!
P.S. My father Joseph has also been trying for years to find our family crest, but since we don't know our original last name, it's been pretty difficult. Any information would be much appreciated.

Is that Albert Setnicar married Bernice Langenohl? I have Setnicar and Setnikar in my tree. It would be nice to work together to fill in some of the information. You can email me at mafu51wi@yahoo.com.

I do a lot of research in Lake County on the Slovenian Community and have been putting together a family tree for 9 years.

I am not related to this family but if your great grandparents were Matt and Annie, the 1920 census shows that Matt arrived in 1903 and Annie arrived in 1906. It shows they were naturalized in 1911. You could try and write for your great-grandfathers naturalization papers. It should show the name he entered the country under.

yes that is my grandmother! Since my grandfather died we have lost contact and now really have no way of finding out what our true last name is. If you have any clues I would really really appreciate it!

The most common spelling I see by people from Slovenia is Setnikar. Another variation spelled in Slovenia is Setniear with a ' over the e. The next most common spelling is Setnicar. This is the common spelling in the US but I do see it used in Slovenia.

Your gr-grandparents were Matheus Setnicar married Anna Janse at Mother Of God Catholic Church in Waukegan on May 21, 1905.

On the passenger manifest Matt's name is spelled Matheus Setnicar. His destination was to his brother Frank in Waukegan Illinois. On the line above Matheus was Johann Setnikar destination Waukegan Illinois.

Matt was naturalized under the name Matt & Anna Setnikar on 06 Jun 1910. His petition for naturalization is available from the Lake County Circuit Court.

Matt's parents were Franc Setnicar & Gertrude Zaloznik from Polhav Gradec.
