My grandfather was from Debrecen, Hungary - as was his father/mother and at least his father (my grandfather's grandfather). It's sad, but the only family members I've ever had on my Lazar side to ask are my dad and uncle (my uncle no longer living). We have never had any other family members that we know of. I do know my grandfather stowed away on a ship right after WWI to join his father that was then living in Chicago, because he failed to get his passport vised. I do know that my ggranparents at that time were still in Debrecen, Hungary (I have a newspaper article where they wanted to deport my grandfather back to Hungary where his "paternal grandparents" were living and my ggrandfather said "if he were to be deported he would send him first class." The only thing I don't understand about the articles (there are about 4) is the only reference to names it only refers to both my grandfathers as Baron's Stephan Julius Von Lorthy Hungarian Nobles - it never mentions Lazar. I asked my father about this his said he was always told by my grandfather that this used to be their whole name but he dropped the Von Lorthy here in the states to sound more American??? I do have pictures of my grandfather in his uniform (several of his company?) during WWI in Hungary and writing on the back, one is like a postcard and the only thing I can make of any of the writing is in my grandfather's hand and it's Kadett Stefan Lazar. Of course I don't speak Hungarian, nor does my father, so we do not have a clue as to what they say. My father was always told by my grandfather that he was a Captain in the Hungarian Army. ???? Would this be the Austro-Hungarian????? And that he went to college in Budapest. ??? I don't even know where to begin to find records on this. ? Thanks so much for your response
