Mary,
I am looking for the passenger list when and where they immigrated. All the census say 1888, but I can't find them. Must be the spelling. I am helping a fellow and would appreciate any help. I understand there is going to be a family reunion in Nebraska this summer and this friend of mine is checking for more information. I am not sure if they came into Canada or New York or what. I hope they publish some kind of book.
Again, Thank You.
Charlene

Researching Niculai Tcaciuc of Costina (Costana), Suceava

Hi all,

I am researching my grandfather who came from Costina (Costana) in Suceava. Unfortunately he passed away before I was born, so what little information I have about him is second-hand.

Niculai Tcaciuc was born 16 JUN 1893 in Costina to Ioan Dumitru Tcaciuc and Maria V Grigoras. He emigrated to Canada around 1912 at the age of 19.

Niculai met his future wife Eudochia Suprovici (born 22 SEP 1895 in Astrita, Cernowitz) in Montreal and they were married at the Roumanian Orthodox Greek Church of Montreal on 18 FEB 1917.

Nick and Dora had 6 children and many grandchildren. Over the generations the family name Tcaciuc has undergone several transformations, with descendants by the names of Caduc, Cacuic, and Cacuick.

If you have any information regarding the family of Niculai Tcacuic or his family from Suceava you can share I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards,
Mark
Luca Franciuc left romania to Regina Saskatchewan in 1913

trying to trace his family back to Romania. I have a fair amount of info after his arrival but this is what I have around his arrival in Canada: he was born in 1894 ish:
Recollections of Luca (Franciuc) Francis of His Experiences, the Romanian Community and Churches in Regina, Saskatchewan as Related to His Daughter, Eugenia Virginia (Francis) Popescul in January, 1978
My father was nineteen years old when he arrived in Regina, Saskatchewan on a warm, sunny weekend in July of 1913. He had left his parents and three older brothers and two sisters at home, which was Mitocul Dragomirnei, Judejul Suceava, Bucovina, Romania. Regina had experienced a damaging cyclone in 1912 and the Romanian newspapers carried advertisements about available work. This enticed my father to come to Canada as he wanted to make his fortune and return home to Romania a rich man. Two younger cousins, loan (John) (born 1896)? and Aurel Danis, came to Canada with him but they did not remain in Saskatchewan too long.

(***Grandpa was the stowaway - no record of him on the SS Roon from Bremen Germany to Halifax***)
They took the train from Romania to Bremen, Germany, crossed the ocean by boat (*S.S. Roon) and docked at Halifax, Nova Scotia, (*July 5, 1913) where they boarded the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway which brought them to Saskatchewan. He remembers they had fallen asleep and because the train conductor had forgotten about them, they were left off at Watrous, Saskatchewan. They then had to wait for another train to take them to Regina. Because they did not speak English, it proved helpful that father had studied German in school. The train station in Regina was located, at that time, just west of Albert Street near the Bridge. They decided to walk towards the city and after walking a short distance, they overheard someone hollering in Romanian. This is when they met John Moore (a ’Satean’ but of German parentage) who was in the house-moving business. After work, Mr. Moore took them home which was at 1756 Ottawa Street and then the following Sunday he took them to Saint Nicholas Church.
Since first posting my query about Bukowina, I have learned the place name of the village that the Frunchak (likely the Smashnuk's too) family hailed from. Not certain if the spelling is correct but it is given to me as SHYRIWCHI, in the district of Cherniwci, Province of Bucovina. That is the name given before they immigated in 1895.

Does anyone know if that place exists today? and if so where is it located? I see places on an 1882 map spelled Szczurowice, near Brody, also similar spellings: Shchurovychi near Lviv, perhaps Surowiczne / Surovicky / or Surovichny destroyed in 1947?

Hello Lisa,
Thank you for your emil, and please pardon my long overdue reply.
Yes we have a little information on Peter Kosakivich, he was a good friend of my Grandfather Eduard Wlaschin, and Peter was my grandfathers witness on his application for citizenship in 1888 in Colorado.

Peter and Anna were among a group of about 25 families from Bukovina who migrated to yuma county, Colorado in late 1880's. and settled in the McGee township in the northwest part of the county.
Most all of these families were directly related to each other and very close.
After a few years of drought, and near starvation, the families migrated, by wagon train in 1894 to Wisconsin for a year, to find jobs in the lumber industry, and then back to Nebraska where they stayed.

Please be in contact and I will attempt to help you all I can, or get you connected to someone who can help.

Ken Stillinger
Omaha, Nebraska

Numai bine,

Ioana Gavrilovici

You could search for the Romanian surname Ivaniuc, it is a name you can found in the Suceava region. All Romanian names ending in "iuc" are mostl likely to have Ukranian origin, due tothe fact that there are a high number of Ukranian origin families in this part of Romania.

I am just starting some work on a family line that lived in Burdujeni. I know their Americanized names were John Henning (born in Hungary in 1874), but a butcher in Burdujeni. Married there to Marie (born about 1882) about 1904.

Any suggestions on doing research in this area would be appreciated!

Scott

Dr. Eisenhauer,

My maternal grandfather's family was from Hliboka. Recently I found his and his siblings birth records. The godparents were a Joannes Tomaszewski and Julia Zielinska. The time period is 1870. I see that you have Joannes in you family.

I am having trouble finding more information on them. I have been looking for over 20 years. My grandfather was Stanislaus Makarewicz. Other names in the family are Bereznicki, Andruchowicz and Luedke. Would you know anything about these families?

what ever help you can give to me is greatly appreciated.

Bob Liebl

Hi there,
Croitor 's name origin
(possible origin of some descendants from Bosanci-Romania):

Based on recent information ( http://www.isogg.org/ ) and Croitor DNA analysis, Croitors descending from Bosanci-Romania belong to the mediteranian race or E1B1B1 haplotype family.
That means that Croitors have origin in ancient Roman Empire, ancient Greece, Middle East and Egypt.

Some people living in Bosanci belong to the R1a haplotype or slavic family.
The Samaritan High Priest lineage and about 20% of jewish people are E1B1B1, which may not exclude jewish origin.

Her parents came from Dorna Vatra...Rubin LESSING and Esther DISTENFELD LESSING... her grandparents came from Dorna Vatra...Kieva DISTENFELD (part of the family spelled it DISTELFELD) and Brane KLEINBERGER, etc.

I have Rubin's parents as Chaim and Lea. I know he had two brothers, Abe and Hermann. I have Abe's descendants and of course Rubin's. I do know that Hermann once came to the US but that is as far as I know about him. My grandmother tells me she believes that her father also had a sister. I am looking for more information on Hermann's family, as well as ancestors of both Chaim and Lea. For example, Lea's maiden name and her family.

I have a lot of information on Kieva's family, including his parents (Dov Berel was his father and Deborah was his mother). I would love any information regarding Dov Berel's ancestors, as well as Deborah's including her maiden name.

The only thing I know about my great great grandmother is that she married Kieva, her maiden name and the names of their children. I would love any information on her ancestors. Oh, I also know she had a half-sister named Tzipporah (Sp?)
My grandfather Dimitri Pauliuc(pauleuc) always said he came from Litteni, Romania. He was born in the late 1800's and died in l962. I have photos of him at his confirmation. They wore sashes that represented the area they came from. I have not been able to find any records on him like baptism, confirmation, birth certificate. Is Suceava the modern name for the area he came from???? Thank you for any help. Peggy

Demeter was supposed to be from Suceava. I have no papers on him. I do have a letter from her sister, signed Lena from Cerenauti(1924) that states he left a family there in Cz and that she sees them when she goes there. She also speaks of selling the old house there. Do you have full names or more info that you would like to share?

I came across your post. My grandfather's family had the name of Fartais, 2 1/2 sisters: Leontine, Rachela and his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth George Fartais of Liteni, Romania. Grandfather was born in July 23, 1892. He fought in the Bulgarian War and then immigrated to Canada around 1912 -1914, somewhere around then. He fought in WW1 for Canada and then immigrated to USA to Michigan. He had a sister, whether it was Rachela or Leontine, don't know. She married a Nicolae Paskal and lived in Detroit, MI which is now Hamtramck, MI. Grandfather was Greek Orthodox, probably was Romanian Orthodox religion. Maybe there is a relation here?

Hi, I have names like Leontine Fartais, Rachela Fartais and Mrs. Elizabeth George Fartais of Liteni, Romania. Elizabeth would be my great-Grandmother. My grandfather, Dimitri Pauleuc (Pauliuc) left Romania and immigrated to Canada and served in WW1 with the Canadian Forces. He left the service in l919 and married, then immigrated to the USA in Michigan in l924. Any relation to you? Leontine and Rachela were probably Grandfather's 1/2 sisters. Somebody wrote me and told me there were 2 villages of Liteni in Suceva County in Romania.
