LANCASTER: Sylvia Elizabeth Millerick passed away peacefully on March 5, 2015 at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Ohio.
She was born Sylvia Russu to Romanian immigrant parents in Lorain, Ohio on September 25, 1925.
After graduating high school in Ashtabula, Ohio she attended Fenn College in Cleveland, Ohio.
World War II changed her plans however, and she joined the US Navy.
As a Pharmacist's Mate she attended to wounded soldiers and their families at the San Diego Naval Hospital.
Upon discharge from the Navy she returned to Cleveland and completed a bachelors degree in psychology.
In 1950 Sylvia married Dr. William Kent Crittenden of Geneva, Ohio, where they resided for many years with daughters Debbie and LuAnn.
She soon realized that she enjoyed teaching and decided to further her education, earning her masters degree in elementary education from Western Reserve University.
Sylvia continued to teach after moving to south Florida.

Though retired from teaching in Florida after the death of Dr. Crittenden and her second husband Francis Millerick, Sylvia spent two years in Belize supervising teaching interns through the Peace Corps.
Less than ten years later this energetic woman who couldn't sit still would again join the Peace Corps, this time to teach English to high school students in Hungary.

After her return from Hungary, Sylvia spent many happy years in Athens, Ohio.
While watching her grandsons Kyle and Ben grow, she stayed busy with volunteer work at West Elementary School and helping international students from Ohio University.
Sylvia moved to Lancaster, Ohio in 2007.
As always, she made friends everywhere, from grocery store employees to the residents and staff at the Sterling House, her final home.

Sylvia is survived by two daughters, Deborah (Stephen) Hedges, of Bulgaria and LuAnn (Joel) Kaiser, of Lancaster, OH; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; sisters Lucille Mencin and Virginia Russu; brothers Arthur, Eugene and Larry Russu.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. March 11, 2015 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 132 S. High St., Lancaster, OH.
In keeping with Sylvia's compassionate spirit and in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a local charity organization.
