Re: Romanians from Romania

I am trying to find ancestors in Romania. My grandfather Florian Ollar (variations of name in family are Olar, Olari, and Olariu) came to the US, was naturalized, and returned to Hungary (Romania) and married my grandmother, Esther Lajos (perhaps Ludwig)and returned to the US. My mother wrote to relatives in Romania in the 70's and 80's after my grandmother died in 1960. The names and addresses she wrote to were Exp. Berbecaru Octavian, Cod 2900 Arad, Romania, and Cojocaru Ioan 1100 Craiova-Dolj, Romania. I wrote a letter to the address in hopes it would get to someone who speaks English and I would get an answer, but I have not received one. I am 69 and retired and probably will never get to Romania. What do you suggest I do to try to find answers.

Judith Opincar Saccorsy 1948-2011 b. Youngstown, Ohio

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. – Judith Elaine Soccorsy, 62, gracefully moved into new life in the early morning hours of May 7, 2011
She was completely beloved, above all, by her devoted husband, Bill.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) to Mary and Daniel Opincar in 1948, Judy was an only daughter and had three brothers.

Surrounded by a large and loving family, Judy attended Ursuline High School, where she fostered her love of reading, literature and her Catholic faith.
A trip to Italy following her graduation was a highlight of her early life.
Judy and her gypsy spirit returned to the states in fall of 1966, and she began attending Youngstown State University. Adored from afar by her future husband throughout her youth, she ran into William D. Soccorsy in church one evening and knew they were destined to be together. They were married in 1969 in the pouring rain.

Judy completed her education degree at Marycrest International University and began her career as an elementary school teacher. The early years of their marriage brought several moves throughout the Midwest before settling first in Detroit and then Cleveland, Ohio.

Judy first became a mother in 1973 when she gave birth to a son, Ben, a second son, Adam, in 1974, and a daughter, Emily Joy, was born in 1977. Judy’s youngest son, Nathan, was born in 1978.
By way of Grand Rapids, Mich., the family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1983. After weathering her first summer in the desert, Judy was embraced by a community of friends who would become her family-away-from-home for the next 28 years. Many of these first friends stood by her side throughout her cancer battle.
Judy handily and lovingly managed a household of six while Bill frequently traveled for his work, still managing to host after-school tea parties for her children, cook delicious family meals every night and stay up until the wee hours working on science projects.

In the late 1980s, Judy returned to work as an editor for an international author and she excelled in this capacity as well. As her children graduated from high school, one of her greatest pleasures was traveling the world with them and with the love of her life, Bill. Judy often said how blessed she was not only to have four terrific children, but to have four amazing children-in-law as well.

The ultimate gracious hostess, Judy’s lovely fingerprints adorned all four of her children’s weddings, and then, the baby showers of her eight grandchildren.

In the last decade of her life, Judy was passionate about her volunteer and community work. Combining her love of books and volunteer work, she put in thousands of hours of work for VNSA (Volunteer Nonprofit Service Association), enlisting Bill’s help for hundreds of book pick-ups throughout the Valley for the organization’s annual book sale fundraiser to support underfunded charities in Phoenix.
In the last several years, Judy was dedicated to Circle the City, which provides healthcare to the homeless of Phoenix, and she served on the board of directors.

Judy was endlessly creative; her cards were works of handmade art filled with eloquent sentiments that touched the heart. To eat at Judy’s table was to be nourished and delighted and she was always happy to set another place at her table. She enjoyed baking, needlework, knitting afghans, quilting, sewing Halloween bags for her grandchildren and stitching elaborate Christmas stockings.

Judy took great pleasure in British period pieces and relished watching the Phoenix Suns. She often said she hated two things, the Lakers and cancer.

Judy felt incredibly blessed throughout her life, including during her cancer fight. She only had one more wish – to live with her most precious Bill for another 62 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Dan Opincar.

She is survived by her husband, William of Scottsdale; son Benjamin and wife Amy, son Adam and wife Tracy, Nathan and wife Kelli and daughter Emily Soccorsy-Heetland and her husband. Jason.
Judy is also survived by her brother, Richard, his wife Kathleen, and their son, Michael Opincar; and by her brother, Charlie.

Judy’s eight grandchildren were the lights of her life, and she never stopped fighting for them: Ellie Rose, Isaac Samuel and Jonah John Soccorsy, Samuel William and Tessa Jude Soccorsy, Mercedes Daniela and Avery Josephine Heetland and Giada Amy Soccorsy.

Memorial donations in Judy’s honor can be made to Circle the City, 220 South 12th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85007

Youngstown Vindicator
May 21, 2011

I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. I am in grad school and had finals this week.

Thank you so much for looking into this for me. I would love to go to Romania someday and find out what happened to this part of my family. My great-grandfather, Stefan Florea, died in 1939 and I have no information about what may have happened after that time. I have a little bit of information, and if you wouldn't mind sending me your 'regular email' I can send you a photo and a a couple of documents that have some information if you think that might be helpful.

Thank you again!

Thank you so much for replying to this query. I am very interested in finding any information about this family. I am especially interested in the daughter that my great-grandfather left behind in Romania. I really do not have any other information other than what I posted in this original query, but if your mother has additional questions, I would be happy to try and answer them. Thank you very much. Angie Bush

Hello,
I descend from Ollar/Olar/Olariu from Hungary/Arad, Romania.
I think the name was originally Olariu (from a 1910 census - my great-grandfather Peter Olariu). The Ellis Island record on my Grandfather Florian says he is from Revetis, Hungary. He went back and married my grandmother Esther (Lajos) Ollar and brought her back. They eventually settled in Detroit, Michigan and he worked for Ford.
I haven't been able to trace back into Hungary, Romania.

The fall of the Iron Curtain in eastern Europe made it easy for the Saxons to emigrate to Germany, where they have the right of return.
For current contact (any ethnicity), check the on-line phone directories.
If looking for a specific Saxon family, the best strategy depends on the when and where of your information. Most of the Saxon villages have a HOG (Heimatortsgemeinschaft, a social group for former villagers; many have a website or at least a mailing address. Check at "Siebenbürgische Zeitung Online" for contact names).

References
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanian_Revolution_of_1989
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_of_return#Germany
http://www.paginialbe.ro/
http://www.siebenbuerger.de/ortschaften/
I have been researching my grandmother's parents and still haven't really found much information. Their names were Sandor Doman (1885-1945) and Irma Konya (1890-1942). On the records I have found, I know they were both from Nagyapold, Hungary. They immigrated to America around 1900, and this was before Nagyapold became a part of Romania. This is all I really know about them, are there any main sites or sources I should look at?

Hello all, I hope we can help each other! My great grandfather emigrated from dealu frumos in Sibiu, transylvania, romania (though at the time it may have been hungary... i've been looking into that possiblity recently, as some census records state "hungary" as place of birth.) His name was Emilian (americanized to "Mike") Vulcan. His Father was Aliman, mother (according to family lore) Maria Techeria, and his grandfather Ioan. Aliman also had a son name Ioan. I'm looking for any information on Aliman or either Ioan. Emilian settled in Columbiana County, OH and there is evidence that Aliman traveled back and forth as well. Any info would be great!

My ancestors were Samuel Schenk and Katherina Maurer. They were from Hetzeldorf (also known as Atel or Eczel) in Romania. Would that happen to be anywhere near the towns you mentioned? Katherina's father's name was Steven and I think she has a siblings named Maria, Sara, Johann,+? There was a family of Stefan Depner who listed his friend in America as Samuel Schenk. There is a Istvan Pitters who lists Samuel Schenk as his cousin. Samuel listed his contact as his brother. They lived in Monaca, PA. I believe Katherina also had a sister whose married name was Schuster. Do you think there is a connection?

Hi there,
My surname is Vulcan. My Great Grandfather, Emilian Vulcan, Emigrated from Dealul Frumos, Romania to the States in about 1902 and settled in Elkton, OH, which is about an hour, maybe less, from alliance, OH. Emilian's father was Aliman, who was from Sibiu County in Romania, City of Rasinari. Aliman was married to Maria Techeria, who i believe was also from Sibiu. Interestingly, there is record of an Ioan Vulcan, Aliman's Son, and also an Ioan listed as his father. Do your records list Ioan as a Surname?

I have found some death records for Vulcans living in Alliance, OH, but could not connect them to my family. Is it possible that the connection lies futher back than I have records? I am very interested in any info you may have on the Vulcu clan, which seems very similar to my Vulcan surname.

Thanks so much!
Rebecca

I have a Great, Great Grandfather form the Sibiu Region in the city of Dumbraveni or Medias (About 10 miles away). His name was Miklos Ibasfalean and I know from immigration records to the US that he was about 43 Yrs old in 1909, putting his birth at around 1866. He lists his closest living relative as his second wife, Haras or Fria Ibasfalean in Medias. My Great grandfather, Cleonic, and his sister, Anna Came to the US after thier mother, Miklos's first wife, Died giving birth to Cleonic. (this was sometime after Miklos's first wife died, because Anna is 24 at her time of arival in the US in 1916, Putting her birthdate at 1892). Miklos makes his first trip to the US in 1903-1905 and a second trip to the US in 1909. His second trip is to settle his first two children in the US, for he lives in Chicago a while his second wife, Haras or Fria, is taking care of Anna and Cleonic in Medias, RO. Anna tells the immigration official that her closest living relative in her home country is Fria or Haras Ibasfalean, her step mother. I know Miklos has more decendents in Sibiu, Dumbraveni and Medias and any more information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Marcu, Ioan, Nicolae, Eliseveta, Anna,Paraschiva

My Great, Great grandfather was from Sibiu in what is now the city of Dumbraveni, RO. Is Eliseveta a surname or a first name? The reason i ask is this; the city of Dumbraveni in Sibiu (the reason i specify is becuase there are more than 1 Dumbraveni, yet only the one in Sibiu holds the secondary name) has gone by a german name (and its derivitives). They called it Ebes in the 12th century, Ebesveta in the 15th and 16th centuries and Ibasfalu as recently as the 20th century (there are up to 10 or 15 different spellings, but all refer to the same place). My surname, Ibasfalean, Derives from this geographical area and seems to be very close to your "Eliseveta". I also know that my Great, Great grandfather's name according to immigration records and my Grandfather testimony, Was Miklos, close to your Nicolae. I have a disant cousin form Sibiu that now lives in Canada and his name is Nicolae Ibasfalean. He believes that he was named for his Great Grandfather, Miklos, Who is my Great, Great Grandfather. Hope to hear from you.

I would almost bet the B is really a fancy H and then the translation (in German) would read:

Siebenburgen susse Heimat or in english:

Siebenburgen (7 Mountains) susse (sweet) Heimat (Homeland)

Hope this helps

I am looking for ancestors of mine from Hetzeldorf. It is in modern day Romania and also goes by the names of Eczel and Atel. My ancestors names are Samuel Schenk and Katharina Maurer. Samuel's name, may have been Andreas and Katharina could have been spelled a variety of ways. Samuel was born on 26 April, 1860 in Hetzeldorf and died 02 January, 1915. Katharina was born on 30 June, 1868 in Hetzeldorf and died on 26 January, 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio. They had 5 children Samuel, Daniel, Andrew, Michael, and Susanne. They came to America in March 1898. Does anyone have any ancestors, descendants, or any other relatives?
