Hello, I am the great-granddaughter of Avram Katz from Piatra Neamt. I am interested in the connection between the family names Katz and Cohen. My grandfather, Haim (Harry) Cohen, was born to Avram Katz, but used Cohen as his surname when he arrived in the US -- perhaps an error on the ship manifest or in immigration records, or perhaps an alternate transliteration of the Hebrew, a name variant, etc. Any other Katz-become-Cohens out there?

thank you. I don't believe she is any further back than i am at this point, though.

The 1774 Census lists 14 Jews and the 1852 list 634. There are only 100,000 people there now. Since we both have Katz' from there in our families, i believe there has to be a connection. Just have to find it.

I have a Romanian friend at work. he is from a town a couple hundred miles from there, in the heart of Transylvania. I am going to press him into service. I will happily share what ever turns up.

noah

My great grandfather was Haim/Hirshele/Herman Katz. When he was in the military he went by Ida Catz. He was born in Piatra Neams. His parents were Haim and Brucha Katz. He was, I believe, the youngest of four brothers. The family was in the lumber business, and the parents died young (in Romania). Harry married Bertha Gutman (from Bacu, I believe, parents Buni and Yona), whose parents were also in the lumber business, and moved to the United States around 1901.

The Gutmans were related to the Beingolds, also in the lumber business. My grandfather, who said he ws born in Focsami in 1885, was originally Joseph Beingold, but when his father died in a fire when Joseph was a young child, his mother Devorah married a man named Scharf....also from area (Bacu?) who adopted him. Any information relating to these names would be wonderful as well.

Rachel,

I am your cousin, Elizabeth Fletcher. My mother was Evelyn, one of Marty's sisters, along the Mollie. Your grandmother, and mine, was Anna Davidson, probably changed from Davidovic, or something similar. She was also born in Romania but she was very young when she came to the US. Grandma Anna did not get along with Grandpa Klapper and they got a divorce in the 1930s during the depression.

Avrum & Golda Katz of Piatra Neamt, 1800s. Had 7-8 children. All but one emigrated to U.S. 1900-1910: Solomon, Isidore, Harry, Rose, Annie, Louis. Family took the name Cohen in this country. The one who stayed in Romania was Joseph. Family lost contact with him in 1930s. It is said the father Avrum migrated to Palestine after Golda's death (probably 1910-1920). Would like to hear if any survivors of Joseph are out there, by some luck, or from cousins here in U.S. My father is Alfred Kern, son of Harry.

I do not know of a Shmil in my line unless he Americanized his name. Of course, he could be a cousin. I can go back only to Avram and Golda Katz in Piatra Neamt, whose children were born in the 1880s. They were Clara, Sol, Isidore, Harry, Annie, Rose, Josef and Louis. All but Josef came to the U.S. between 1900 and 1910. After Golda died, Avram went to Palestine. Josef and his family (wife and 2 boys) were lost in the holocaust--at least no one had contact with them after the late 1930s.

I believe this was my father's father, likely born as Avram Lazarovici, and changed to Abe Klapper upon migration to the U.S. My name as a kid was "Klapper" but my father changed his and my names to "Lazzar" in honor of his Lazarovici ancestors. I'd like to find out more about his wife - I don't even have her maiden name and would like to find out her origin. I believe they were married in Philadephia. What is your association with Abraham Klapper, and does this sound like the same person? I'm curious to know pretty much anything.

Yosef was married to Tzipora and had five sons: Shmil(shmuel), Melech, Shimon(born in 1901), Haim and Moses. They all lived in piatra neamtand naturally they are not among the living. All of their siblings live in israel.I have much more information about their siblings. I'll be happy if you can tell me if there any connection and help me to get more information about them.

Yosi

Surname FEDELES

Looking for anyone who knows anything about surname FEDELES. Trying to make contact with one of the many Fedeles from Romania. I have information on our surname leading to minor nobility in 1500s and a town named after us in Zakarpatska Oblast, Ukraine. Reason to believe we are all one big family.

My great-grandfather was Vasil Fedeles who came from Zarich'nye (old Drugehaza or Zaricso). Could also be from Fedelesfalva. He migrated to USA in 1911 at age 19 and married Julia Pekar then Anna Gonda. He was probably Rusyn. Mother was Maria Kelemanik and siblings were Cyril, Andrej, Maria and Viera.

Even if nothing sounds familiar I want to make contact with any Romanian FEDELES. Please write.

I am applying for a copy of the original marriage certificate of John Edwards and Eleanor Snape. This should reveal who John Edwards father was. I will also take a look at the 1841 Census on microfilm which should reveal all the members of the household and sibblings. Did you already have a look at the census?
Regards
Mark Edwards/ markatcrt@aol.com
