Hello,

I'm Otilia Lazar, my grandfather is also from Danes, his name was Lazar Ion, and was born around 1920. His parents, unfortunately don't know their name (my grandfather died and I didn't ask him) left from Danes around 1930 but stopped in Braila, Romania because one of them get sick and died, so they remained there.

I'm curios to know more about the family and why they wanted to left all in America.

For information about birth or marriage documents I think the city hall from Danes or Sighisoara is the best place to look for.

I know my answer comes after 10 years but I'm glad to meet some possible family members.

Kind regards,
Otilia

Dear Fred,
There are four Szentmartons in Mures County...
- Dicsoszentmarton / Tarnaveni
- Korodszentmarton / Coroisanmartin
- Mezoszentmarton / Sanmartinu de Campie
- Nyaradszentmarton / Mitresti
The last three places has no Catholic communities, so the must probable place of your Csonkas is Dicsoszentmarton / Tarnaveni / Sankt-Martin (Marteskirch or Mierteskirch).
Unfortunatelly, no church records in the Mures County State Archive - in lucky case, they are kept by the local Parish Office.
Janos - from Transilvania
www.erdelygen.uw.hu

My family came from Albesht, same county 3 miles east of Sig.Rebecca was my Grandmothers mother s name. And we have an uncle Nick ( Anna, grandmother brother) both migrated to Ft. Wayne In. in 1917. These people were decendents of Hungarian Szelkly (Hargita County today) ,Look up Lazaria,Lazar Castle (1450-1870 s) I don t know if this has anything to do with either one of our family orgins, but my grandmother said that Bethlan Gabor (prince of Transylvania) was born in the family house. She just left out the part that it was more of a manor. And they had gone broke by 1890 s and moved to Sig. Not much more known ,a few Lazars are still in the area as my Grandmother didn t sign over property (blacksmith shop) to her nephew in 1964.That was in Sig at the time. Hope this helps ....ctyler

You've got a couple of difficulties to overcome:
Just as Maros-Vásárhely (aka Neumarkt) is now Târgu Mureş, so your "Szent-Márton" is now something else (even if similar). However, there were at least 12 Szent-Mártons in Transylvania (3 in the same county as Maros-Vásárhely!) - did your relative mean the closest to Maros-Vásárhely or the biggest or best known?
http://www.bogardi.com/gen/ has good searchable gazetteers. (Or use Wikipedia, WeRelate, FamilySearch,...) You also could google the on-line Romanian phone books and search them for where there are Csonkas now and then match the current locations with the old placenames.
Good luck!
Re: Socaciu family from Soard, Transylvania

Wow! Thank you for the good news. I had forgotten about my posting. It has been nearly a year since I posted the request.Well-long story short, I am planning to visit Sighisoara, Soard, Sacel and Vanatori late this summer. I finally made contact with a distant cousin who now lives in Detroit. His last name is Campean and his great-grandmother was my grandfather's sister Ana Capatina. His father, Gheorghe, was visiting him from Sighisoara, and we were all able to meet.Gheorghe's mother is my father's first cousin. So we met face to face last September and learned about the village and each other. It was a great experience.
My grandfather kept a few close friends and I found out that they were from the village or nearby. He was close to Avram Anghel and Nick Kelemen from the village. I hired a researcher to photograph the orthodox cemetary and graves. I saw all the family names except for Dinescu and Tescula. My grandfather had a first cousin who went by John Dan here in Wierton, WVa. His step daughter told me that his real name was Dinescu. But I did not see any pictures of tombstones with the name Dinescu. There are several with the name Dan so I supect the stepdaughter is incorrect.
The Socaciu name appears to have died out in the village. The last Socaciu ,Ioan, died in 2008. He was a first cousin to my father. He left one child, Marioara Murzea, and his widow, Olivia. Marioara and her family live in Brasov. Olivia is in her late 70's and she still lives in Soard. Please let me know what your mother finds out too.It was wonderful to hear from someone who shares the heritage.
Your mother probably knew Gheorghe, his sister Mariana- married to Liviu Mosura, and his brother Traian. Mariana and Traian spend the summers in Soard. She may have known Marioara along with the Cadaru family of Sacel. My name is Ted Sockaci and if you wish you can contact me directly at theodore_784@hotmail.com. Thank you so much for contacting me. It made my day. Ted.

Hi! I found your message while searching "Soard" on Google and was happy to see other people with the same roots living in the US. I live in NC, but my mother is from Soard. As a child I used to go to my grandparents in Soard a lot and I've heard of some of the names that you mention. I called my mother and she is familiar with all the last names that you mention. She is 63 years old and her grandparents came to the US around the same time your grandparents came. They settled in Cleveland, OH, but returned to Romania in 1922. My mother grew up with other kids whose last name was Socaci, Capatina and Regula. She knows of Tescula but said they lived in Vanatori, near Soard. She said that she will call her sister who lives in Soard with her family to find out more information about the people that you mentioned. She said her sister's husband, as a child lived 2 houses away from Capatina. As soon as she finds out more I will get back to you.

I can only recall two of my father's brothers: George and Mike. Our family immigrated to Canada during the mid 1920's. My sister Katharine was born in 1924, my brother Fred was born 1936 and I was born in 1949.

I believe one of my parents was from Birk and the other from a nearby village.

Good luck on your search,

John Dienesch

Hi - my name is Melanie "Zikeli" Hines and my great-grandfather was Andreas Zikeli who was born in Maldorf. He married Elizabeth Gunther and they had 7 children. Andy (my grandfather), Paul, John, George, Hilda, Elizabeth, Karl and another daughter I only know as Aunt Tiny. We just were in Ellwood, PA for our Zikeli reunion. Somewhere we are related - would be interested to see where in the family tree we are connected.

My grandfather came to the US in 1922 I believe and he also ended up in Detroit. Surely they might have known each other. My Grandfather changed his name to Peter Lenkey after arriving. I don't know why. Have you found anything?
Debby

I am trying to locate records of the Socaciu family of Soard. My grandfather,Janos(Ioan) Socaciu, came from there. He left his parents Zaharia and Ana(Campean) along with sisters Ana (Married Gheorghe Capatina)and Sylvia(Married Nicolae Cardaru), a brother Todor, and an uncle Teodor. I have tried the Mures county seat and they have no records from the village. The local orthodox church only has records back to 1950. Does anyone have any ideas where to look next? Any information about the above families would be welcomed.
My grandfather was also related to the Tescula,Regula, and Dinescu families from the local area and had a first cousin John Dinescu(aka Dan) here(western PA) along with second cousins John Tescula and John Regula.Information about those families would be appreciated also.My grandfather and his cousins came to America between 1912 to 1914.Thank you.

Hi!
Your query doesn't include some key information
1. birth and immigration dates - either estimated or known
2. sources for your current information, whether documented or oral tradition
3. what resources you've already searched, whether successful or not

The Ellis Island entry records include a number of Radlers from Transylvania, mostly from the region between Segesvar (Sighisoara or Schäßburg) and Medgyes (Medias or Mediasch). One John Radler, arrived 1909, is a merchant from Segevar but place of birth is given as Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureş or Neumarkt).

Identifying the right place is a key to further information.

Hello. I recently learned that my great-great grandfather, Martin Mach, owned land and lived in a village known as Darawa near the village of Isten-Falva. This would have been around 1859 or 1860. While his sons immigrated to the United States between 1896 and 1902, he remained in the homeland. I have not been able to locate any information about Darawa but have learned that Isten-Falva is now known as Istan-Tau near the village of Band and about 15 miles west of Targu Mures. I am wondering if anyone knows more specifically where this village may be located as well as where I might look for land records/tax records/ or census information. According to memories of family members my great-great grandfather took a government land grant. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed you had Andy Zikeli in the lineage. I don't know if there is a connection but my greatgrandparents were Andreas (Andrew, Andy)Konrad son of Johann Konrad and Sara Zikeli. Andreas Konrad was born 29 Oct 1881, in the Village of Maldorf (Domald), Commune of Viisoara, Mures (Miersch), Translyvania (Siebenburgen), Romania, Austria-Hungary. (the names of these places changed over time) He had several sibilings including Michael and George. Andreas Konrad married Marie Zikeli on 21 Aug 1904 in Maldorf. Marie Zikeli was born 29 Sep 1885 in Maldorf. Her parents were Andreas Zikeli and Marie ??.

Andreas Konrad immigrated to Homestead, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, final destination was stepbrother? Andreas Zikeli. Andreas Konrad travelled on ship Wittekind arriving in Baltimore, Maryland on 22 Mar 1905. Andreas Konrad traveled with two Michael Zikeli's. They appeared to be cousins or possibly stepbrothers. The Zikeli's Andreas Konrad came to stay with apparently settled in Elmwood, PA. Andreas Konrad's wife, Marie Zikeli, immigrated, with their infant child, also Andreas Konrad, to Clairton, PA, traveling on ship Kaiserin Auguste Victoria arriving on 9 Apr 1907 at Ellis Island, New York.

Andy and Marie had eight children, moved to Cleveland, OH around 1912. Andy died 18 Sept 1953 and Marie died 17 May 1949. I am a descendent, in that they were my great grandparents. I understand that the Zikeli's in Elmwood, PA and possibly some in Cleveland, OH, are distant relatives.

If you find out more about your Andy Zikeli and Sarah Grell, let me know..They might be relatives of my greatgrandparents.

Mike

Grell family in Keisd/Saschiz

My grandfather, John Grell, was born in 1881 in Keisd. His
father was Michael and mother ? Ehrman. Below is what info I have from an old file in my computer. I do have some updates from Margarete, daughter of Hilda Gutkowski.

I visited Transylvania in August of 2006 with the ATS trip from Cleveland, but since I had recently injured my knee, I was unable to do the walking to the cemetery in Keisd, as I had hoped. Time factor didn't help either.

I have since learned that the church records are held by the bishop in Schassburg/Sighisoara, but I would like to know if anyone has an address or email address so that I might submit my information to them to locate some of the missing information. The other question I have is, how do you correctly address something being sent to Romania? Here it is
name,
address,
city state zip code

While I spent several hours in Keisd, I learned that some Fograscher/Grell descendants still lived there, but they were not at home while I was there. I also learned that some of their relatives in Germany would be visiting in the next couple of days. Guess my timing was really off for that trip.

I have learned that my grandfather came here in 1905/06 (but can't locate through which port - definitely not Ellis Island), lived in an area of Cleveland with a Mike Grell ( can't determine if he was a brother or a cousin). Married in March 1906, returned to Europe with his wife and daughter, between 12/1907 and 11/1909. Had two additional children there. Returned to Ohio after 9/1911, but unsure when. Have him purchasing land in January 1914. Had another child in August 1914. He returned to Europe again at some point, because I had a shipping tag dated 1917. But I don't know if it was just him or the whole family that returned to Europe. Next child was born in 1923 and then one in 1926 and city directory records place him here in 1923. I have no idea where the family was between 1914-1923, except that I think mother and children were here in rental property on a farm in what is currently suburbs. No records have been found yet to prove where they were.

There is another Grell family in the area, descended from I belive that Mike Grell that was listed in the 1906 directory. Talking with descendants of him, they don't know much of their family history either. But they do know he was from Keisd as well and was a little older than John. Their family also has marriages to Fograschers as well. I have to presume that they are related as well. I also know that supposedly we are realted to the Knall family - cousins - but even their line here in Cleveland cannot confirm any connections.

It is also rumored in my family that because my grandmother was Catholic, that that fact may have separated my grandfather from his family. When talking with the Mike Grell descendant, she also told me of an uncle of hers that no one in her family communicated with, because he had also married a Catholic woman.

She also stated that her grandparents rarely talked about connections with family in Europe and my older cousins haven't been able to shed any light on family history either. My one cousin did mention that grandpa talked about the terracing of land, the rolling hills, and the good farmland that was in his village. On my trip, that was very evident. It was great to view the land where he lived and experience the view of the fortress of Keisd overlooking his village. I got to see something that he viewed growing up.

If anyone can supply me with some information or fill in any of the blanks below - THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Judy Gilson
Descendants of Mike Grell

1 Mike Grell	b: Abt. 1860
..	+?
